21st Century Information Workers: What Core Competencies Should MSIS Students Learn?
The day-to-day work of information workers charged with information creation, organization, presentation, preservation, analysis, and retrieval is changing dramatically because of rapid advances in technology, the ubiquitous availability of information, and the increasing diversity and globalization of users, patrons, and co-workers. Further, the jobs themselves are changing, such that information workers are not likely to focus on one traditional information task, but must integrate other knowledge and skills, such as data analysis (with large data) and social media. The array of jobs and tasks leads us to ask: what are the core competencies for all information studies students? The authors conducted a survey of more than 2,000 information professionals focusing on six information work roles (archivy, data analysis, librarianship, records/digital assets management, social media, and user experience) to find out about their day-to-day work and their recommendations for formal curriculum. Themes in videogame research : a content analysis of scholarly articles
textIn trying to provide access to videogame materials for scholars, collecting organizations must build standards for building and structuring collections, and in turn information professionals must assess the information needs of users. In order to begin the assessment, this paper presents a content analysis of scholarly videogame articles. The results of the analysis will provide the basis for structuring videogame archives, libraries, or databases. Metadata schemas are important to access, and to collecting. That metadata will aid patrons is widely accepted, but too often schemas and vocabularies are based on only experts’ opinions without taking into account patrons’ ideas of what is important. To address this dearth, the content analysis presented in this paper combines historical ideas of metadata standards from expert archivists with an analysis of what themes are important, common, and sought for in the literature of videogame scholars, who are the likely users of videogame collections.Informatio

India vs. United States Undergraduates\u27 Attitudes Concerning Child Sexual Abuse: The Impact of Survivor Sex, Survivor Age, Survivor Response, Respondent Sex, and Country of Origin
Written descriptions of sexual interaction between an adult and a 15-year-old child were utilized to study the impact of survivor sex, perpetrator sex, survivor response and country of origin (India vs. United States) on attribution of blame, labeling of child sexual abuse, perception of realistic survivor behavior, and effect on the child. MANCOVA results of responses collected from 720 undergraduate students (360 = Indian students; 360 = U. S. students) indicated that country of origin was related to the respondent ratings for the five vignette items. Other interactions obtained, were related to the sex of the respondent, perpetrator and survivor, or the response of the survivor. Results are discussed relative to generalizability of results, child sexual abuse in India, and the need for educational programs in child sexual abuse. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd
