Universidad de Costa Rica/[834-B9-189]/UCR/Costa RicaUniversidad de Costa Rica/[736-B8-016 ]/UCR/Costa RicaUCR::Vicerrector铆a de Investigaci贸n::Unidades de Investigaci贸n::Ingenier铆a::Centro de Investigaciones en Tecnolog铆as de Informaci贸n y Comunicaci贸n (CITIC)UCR::Vicerrector铆a de Investigaci贸n::Unidades de Investigaci贸n::Ciencias Agroalimentarias::Estaci贸n Experimental Agr铆cola Fabio Baudrit Moreno (EEAFBM

Development and Evaluation of Augmented Object Prototypes for Notifications in Collaborative Writing Environments

    No full text
In Ubiquitous Computing, augmented objects refer to those elements of the real world which have been provided with computational capabilities to meet a specific need. Meanwhile, Collaborative Writing Environments (CWE) allow groups of people to work together and increase the chances of success and share knowledge when they are working on shared documents. An extremely important aspect in CWEs is notification mechanisms as these are essential to provide users awareness about the collaborative work they are doing. In this paper, we describe a set of augmented objects created to support the notification in CWEs; these objects can improve the way in which the notifications are delivered to users, according to the writing strategy defined by the collaboration team.Universidad de Costa Rica/[834-B6-178]/UCR/Costa RicaMinisterio de Ciencia, Tecnolog铆a y Telecomunicaciones/[]/MICITT/Costa RicaConsejo Nacional para Investigaciones Cient铆ficas y Tecnol贸gicas of the Government of Costa Rica/[]/CONICIT/Costa RicaUCR::Vicerrector铆a de Investigaci贸n::Unidades de Investigaci贸n::Ingenier铆a::Centro de Investigaciones en Tecnolog铆as de Informaci贸n y Comunicaci贸n (CITIC)UCR::Vicerrector铆a de Docencia::Ingenier铆a::Facultad de Ingenier铆a::Escuela de Ciencias de la Computaci贸n e Inform谩tic

Designing a Context-Aware Smart Notifications System for Precision Agriculture

    No full text
Smart farming solutions seek to help farmers in their daily activities. Their use has shown that it is beneficial for farmers to be aware of the distinct variables affecting the production. For this reason, having alerts and notifications in monitoring and control platforms is crucial. However, in some circumstances, farmers cannot attend to the messages delivered through traditional mechanisms, making it impossible for them to be informed at the right moment. In this paper, we present the design evaluation of an intelligent context-aware smart notifications system for precision agriculture. We consider using distinct notification mechanisms to improve the delivery of notifications to the farmers. We carry out an anticipated user experience evaluation to assess the system鈥檚 design and validate the use of the notification mechanisms in distinct scenarios. A total of 48 potential users from Spain and Costa Rica participated in the evaluation. The results show that our proposed system can be very helpful in supporting farmers to be aware of the state of crops. In addition, non-traditional notification mechanisms can potentially keep the farmers informed without affecting their daily activities. Costa Rican potential users value the system鈥檚 novelty more than Spanish users.

User - Smart Building Interactions: An Analysis of Privacy and Productivity Human Factors

    No full text
Smart buildings are increasingly becoming more common and changing the way we interact with our home, workplace, and cities. Consequently, it is important to study how human factors play a role in smart building-based environments. This research focuses on the privacy and productivity of human factors, and presents the results of two complementary evaluations: a survey in which people鈥檚 privacy concerns were analyzed and an assessment that quantifies if smart building functionalities impacts people鈥檚 productivity.UCR::Vicerrector铆a de Docencia::Ingenier铆a::Facultad de Ingenier铆a::Escuela de Ciencias de la Computaci贸n e Inform谩tic
