    The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) Site is home to vast numbers and a wide variety of important cultural resources representing at least a 13,500 year span of human land use in the region. As a federal agency, the Department of Energy, Idaho Operations Office (DOE-ID) has legal responsibility for the management and protection of the resources and has contracted these responsibilities to Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA). The BEA professional staff is committed to maintaining a cultural resource management program that accepts the challenge of preserving INL cultural resources in a manner reflecting their importance in local, regional, and national history. This report is intended as a stand-alone document that summarizes activities performed by the INL Cultural Resource Management Office (CRMO) staff during fiscal year 2011. This work is diverse, far-reaching and though generally confined to INL cultural resource compliance, also includes a myriad of professional and voluntary community activities. This document is intended to be informative to both internal and external stakeholders, serve as a planning tool for future INL cultural resource management work, and meet an agreed upon legal requirement

    Behavior of Waterproofing Systems Exposed to Environmental Agents

    The service life of buildings can be associated with the durability of enveloping the elements, e.g., the flat roofs that are constantly exposed to environmental agents. Waterproof membranes, produced with bituminous or polymeric materials, usually protect these elements. This paper presents an experimental study of waterproofing systems subjected to environmental agents of degradation. Four types of membranes were tested: bituminous, polyurethane, acrylic and acrylic with polyester mesh. All membranes were applied to concrete substrates and exposed to cycles of 48 hours in 70°C oven and 24 hours in immersion vats with 23°C water. The specimens were subjected to 0, 4, or 8 cycles and submitted to pull-off tests. The results demonstrated that the waterproof system behavior change when subjected to cycles of the temperature gradient. The tests show that the different thermal deformation between the membranes and the concrete substrate results in loss of adhesion

    Efficient organisation of the contralateral hemisphere connectome is associated with improvement in intelligence quotient after paediatric epilepsy surgery

    ObjectiveAims of epilepsy surgery in childhood include optimising seizure control and facilitating cognitive development. Predicting which children will improve cognitively is challenging. We investigated the association of the pre-operative structural connectome of the contralateral non-operated hemisphere with improvement in intelligence quotient (IQ) post-operatively.MethodsConsecutive children who had undergone unilateral resective procedures for epilepsy at a single centre were retrospectively identified. We included those with pre-operative volume T1-weighted non-contrast brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), no visible contralateral MRI abnormalities, and both pre-operative and two years post-operative IQ assessment. The MRI of the hemisphere contralateral to the side of resection was anatomically parcellated into 34 cortical regions and the covariance of cortical thickness between regions was used to create binary and weighted group connectomes.ResultsEleven patients with a post-operative IQ increase of at least 10 points at two years were compared with twenty-four patients with no change in IQ score. Children who gained at least 10 IQ points post-operatively had a more efficiently structured contralateral hemisphere connectome with higher global efficiency (0.74) compared to those whose IQ did not change at two years (0.58, p=0.014). This was consistent across thresholds and both binary and weighted networks. There were no statistically significant group differences in age, sex, age at onset of epilepsy, pre-operative IQ, mean cortical thickness, side or site of procedure, two year post-operative Engel scores or use of anti-seizure medications between the two groups. ConclusionsSurgical procedures to reduce or stop seizures may allow children with an efficiently structured contralateral hemisphere to achieve their cognitive potential. <br/

The conformation of the deprotonated compound is constrained by charge-assisted strong hydrogen bonds with the dicyclo­hexyl­aminium ion and a dense hydrogen-bond network involving co-crystallized solvent mol­ecules. The dihedral angle between the fused ring systems in the anion is 58.35 (4)°

    The Visual Patient Avatar ICU Facilitates Information Transfer of Written Information by Visualization: A Multicenter Comparative Eye-Tracking Study

    Patient monitoring is crucial in critical care medicine. Perceiving and interpreting multiple vital signs requires a high workload that can lead to decreased situation awareness and consequently inattentional blindness, defined as impaired perception of unexpectedly changing data. To facilitate information transfer, we developed and validated the Visual-Patient avatar. Generated by numerical data, the animation displays the status of vital signs and patient installations according to a user-centered design to improve situation awareness. As a surrogate parameter for information transfer in patient monitoring, we recorded visual attention using eye-tracking data. In this computer-based study, we compared the correlation of visually perceived and correctly interpreted vital signs between a Visual-Patient-avatar ICU and conventional patient monitoring. A total of 50 recruited study participants (25 nurses, 25 physicians) from five European study centers completed five randomized scenarios in both modalities. Using a stationary eye tracker as the primary endpoint, we recorded how long different areas of interest of the two monitoring modalities were viewed. In addition, we tested for a possible association between the length of time an area of interest was viewed and the correctness of the corresponding question. With the conventional monitor, participants looked at the installation site the longest (median 2.13–2.51 s). With the Visual-Patient-avatar ICU, gaze distribution was balanced; no area of interest was viewed for particularly long. For both modalities, the longer an area was viewed, the more likely the associated question was answered incorrectly (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.95–0.99, p = 0.008). The Visual-Patient-avatar ICU facilitates and improves information transfer through its visualizations, especially with written information.     Biologic Therapy for HLA-B27-associated Ocular Disorders

    The treatment of articular and extra-articular manifestations associated with HLA-B27 has undergone dramatic changes over the past two decades, mainly as a consequence of the introduction of biologic agents and in particular anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNFα) agents. Uveitis is known to be the most frequent extra-articular feature in HLA-B27-associated spondyloarthritides. Topical corticosteroids and cycloplegic agents remain the cornerstones of treatment. However, biologic therapy may be effective in the management of refractory or recurrent forms of uveitis. This review gives an update on the management of HLA-B27-associated ocular disorders with biologics, including anti-TNFα agents and non-anti-TNFα biologic modifier drugs. There is an emerging role for newer biologics targeting interleukin-12/23 and interleukin-17 for the treatment of spondyloarthritides but data on their efficacy on anterior uveitis are sparse
