The aim of this study was to determine aquatic insect (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha, Gerromorpha and Coleoptera: Hydradephaga, Hydrophilidae) fauna in two temporary and two permanent ponds and to relate assemblage structure, abundance and diversity with respect to hydroperiod, habitat size, shading of ponds and altitude. Field work was conducted out in four karst ponds in the municipality of Mrkopalj (Gorski kotar) from June to September 2005. Altogether, 247 specimens belonging to 24 species of water bugs and beetles were collected. A large number of species was recorded in the Sungerski lug pond (S1) while great species diversity in relation to abundance was recorded for the Sunger pond (S2). The occurrence of Anacena limbata and Anacena lutescens from the family Hydrophilidae and Hydroporus melanarius from the family Dytiscidae is an important faunistic result, because they are new to the fauna of Croatia. According to the results of our study, water bugs and beetles prefer large, permanent, open ponds at a lower altitude. The proportion of species differed between temporary and permanent ponds, and temporary and small ponds (S2) had especially diverse fauna of aquatic insects.Cilj ovoga rada je utvrditi faunu vodenih kukaca (Heteroptera: Nepomorpha, Gerromorpha i Coleoptera: Hydradephaga, Hydrophilidae) u stalnim i privremenim lokvama te usporediti sastav, brojnost i raznolikost u odnosu na razdoblje različite razine vode (hidroperiod), veličinu staništa, zasjenjenost svake lokve okolnom vegetacijom i nadmorsku visinu.

In this paper the results of a ten year investigation of mosquitoes using dry ice baited CDC traps in the city of Osijek, Croatia are presented. In the first year we recorded 16 species. During these ten years the total of 20 species were determined. The single method, dry ice baited CDC traps, makes it possible to determine almost the entire fauna in a given area. The estimated fauna is statistically calculated. Five non-parametric estimators were chosen for evaluation: one-factorial Jackknife (Jackknife-1); two-factorial Jackknife (Jackknife-2); one-factorial Chao (Chao-1); two-factorial Chao (Chao-2) and Bootstrap. The estimated fauna contains between 22 and 29 species. The method used turned out to be very good when used over a long period of time, because new species were registered even in years without many mosquitoes.U ovom radu govori se desetgodišnjim rezultatima istraživanja komaraca, koji su hvatani metodom CDC klopke uz suhi led kao atraktant u Osijeku.

Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) in Dog’s Hair as a Sign of Oxidative Stress – Preliminary Study

    No full text
Various endogenous and exogenous factors influence the occurrence of oxidative stress in all organisms, as well as in dogs. An increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration and the occurrence of oxidative stress can lead to changes in the structure of proteins, lipids, and DNA. The level of oxidative stress can be determined by measuring the end products of lipid peroxidation known as reactive substances of thiobarbituric acid (TBARS) of which malondialdehyde (MDA) is the most important. The concentration of MDA can be easily measured in various tissues and body excretions, but also by a non-invasive method of hair sampling. In this research, we have collected dog hair in grooming saloons, fluorometrically measured TBARS levels and compared the obtained values with factors such as breed, sex, age, passive smoking, sterilization, and season. No significant difference between sterilized and non-sterilized dogs was observed. The intensity of lipid peroxidation differed between the sexes, dog breeds, status of smoking by owner and exposure to UV radiation

The influence of extreme floods from the River Danube in 2006 on phytoplankton communities in a floodplain lake: Shift to a clear state

AbstractThe influence of extreme floods from the River Danube in 2006 on the species composition and vertical distributions of phytoplankton was studied in a shallow floodplain lake, Lake Sakadaš (Kopački Rit Nature Park, Croatia) which in the last few decades was in a turbid state characterised by high phytoplankton concentrations. As a consequence of extremely high floods, the whole floodplain area (approximately 16km2) became one lentic habitat with well developed macrophyte vegetation. Seasonal dynamics of chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration in the lake had a characteristic pattern for the shallow lakes with dense macrophyte vegetation. Extremely low mean phytoplankton abundance and biomass were found in the conditions of very high nutrient concentrations. Dominant phytoplankton species were diatoms and chlorococcal green algae from the functional groups characteristic for a mixed environment. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) demonstrated that nutrients and temperature were significant environmental variables for their development. The sequence of phytoplankton seasonality, vertical distribution of phytoplankton, as well as the domination of rapidly acclimating phytoplankton forms (R-strategists) indicated clear, well-mixed conditions and a highly disturbed environment. Our results suggest that the occurrence of extreme flooding can be a stressor high enough for the transition from a turbid to a clear state of the floodplain lake. Possibly, cyclic shifts between alternative stable states in floodplain ecosystems can be expected as a consequence of the impact of extreme hydrological events induced by a climate change
