    Absence of continuous spectral types for certain nonstationary random models

    We consider continuum random Schr\"odinger operators of the type Hω=−Δ+V0+VωH_{\omega} = -\Delta + V_0 + V_{\omega} with a deterministic background potential V0V_0. We establish criteria for the absence of continuous and absolutely continuous spectrum, respectively, outside the spectrum of −Δ+V0-\Delta +V_0. The models we treat include random surface potentials as well as sparse or slowly decaying random potentials. In particular, we establish absence of absolutely continuous surface spectrum for random potentials supported near a one-dimensional surface (``random tube'') in arbitrary dimension.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure

    Ryegrass varieties are synthetics, with a wide within-variety genetic variance for most traits. Ryegrass swards are likely to experience genetic changes with seasons and years because of plant death, asymmetric vegetative reproduction or plant recruitment through reproduction or seed immigration. These changes may be related to or induce changes in agronomic traits, such as biomass production or dry matter composition. The present research was undertaken to measure genetic changes in swards obtained from sowings of a single variety of ryegrass.     The random link approximation for the Euclidean traveling salesman problem

    The traveling salesman problem (TSP) consists of finding the length of the shortest closed tour visiting N ``cities''. We consider the Euclidean TSP where the cities are distributed randomly and independently in a d-dimensional unit hypercube. Working with periodic boundary conditions and inspired by a remarkable universality in the kth nearest neighbor distribution, we find for the average optimum tour length = beta_E(d) N^{1-1/d} [1+O(1/N)] with beta_E(2) = 0.7120 +- 0.0002 and beta_E(3) = 0.6979 +- 0.0002. We then derive analytical predictions for these quantities using the random link approximation, where the lengths between cities are taken as independent random variables. From the ``cavity'' equations developed by Krauth, Mezard and Parisi, we calculate the associated random link values beta_RL(d). For d=1,2,3, numerical results show that the random link approximation is a good one, with a discrepancy of less than 2.1% between beta_E(d) and beta_RL(d). For large d, we argue that the approximation is exact up to O(1/d^2) and give a conjecture for beta_E(d), in terms of a power series in 1/d, specifying both leading and subleading coefficients.Comment: 29 pages, 6 figures; formatting and typos correcte

    Scattering Theory for Jacobi Operators with Steplike Quasi-Periodic Background

    We develop direct and inverse scattering theory for Jacobi operators with steplike quasi-periodic finite-gap background in the same isospectral class. We derive the corresponding Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko equation and find minimal scattering data which determine the perturbed operator uniquely. In addition, we show how the transmission coefficients can be reconstructed from the eigenvalues and one of the reflection coefficients.Comment: 14 page

    Let XX be a compact Kahler manifold and L→XL\to X a quantizing holomorphic Hermitian line bundle. To immersed Lagrangian submanifolds Λ\Lambda of XX satisfying a Bohr-Sommerfeld condition we associate sequences {∣Λ,k⟩}k=1∞\{ |\Lambda, k\rangle \}_{k=1}^\infty, where ∀k\forall k ∣Λ,k⟩|\Lambda, k\rangle is a holomorphic section of L⊗kL^{\otimes k}. The terms in each sequence concentrate on Λ\Lambda, and a sequence itself has a symbol which is a half-form, σ\sigma, on Λ\Lambda. We prove estimates, as k→∞k\to\infty, of the norm squares ⟨Λ,k∣Λ,k⟩\langle \Lambda, k|\Lambda, k\rangle in terms of ∫Λσσ‾\int_\Lambda \sigma\overline{\sigma}. More generally, we show that if Λ1\Lambda_1 and Λ2\Lambda_2 are two Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds intersecting cleanly, the inner products ⟨Λ1,k∣Λ2,k⟩\langle\Lambda_1, k|\Lambda_2, k\rangle have an asymptotic expansion as k→∞k\to\infty, the leading coefficient being an integral over the intersection Λ1∩Λ2\Lambda_1\cap\Lambda_2. Our construction is a quantization scheme of Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds of XX.     Local trace formulae and scaling asymptotics in Toeplitz quantization, II

    In the spectral theory of positive elliptic operators, an important role is played by certain smoothing kernels, related to the Fourier transform of the trace of a wave operator, which may be heuristically interpreted as smoothed spectral projectors asymptotically drifting to the right of the spectrum. In the setting of Toeplitz quantization, we consider analogues of these, where the wave operator is replaced by the Hardy space compression of a linearized Hamiltonian flow, possibly composed with a family of zeroth order Toeplitz operators. We study the local asymptotics of these smoothing kernels, and specifically how they concentrate on the fixed loci of the linearized dynamics.Comment: Typos corrected. Slight expository change

    Realizations of Differential Operators on Conic Manifolds with Boundary

    We study the closed extensions (realizations) of differential operators subject to homogeneous boundary conditions on weighted L_p-Sobolev spaces over a manifold with boundary and conical singularities. Under natural ellipticity conditions we determine the domains of the minimal and the maximal extension.
