    Reflecting a… “Bit”. What relationship between metacognition and ICT?

    Abstract Using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in educational environments has become widespread in latest years. Since research underlined the important role played by metacognition and self-regulation abilities in fostering learning outcomes, the relationship between these aspects appears to be particularly worthy of investigation. In this review, we present 14 studies that have deepened the relationship between ICT, metacognitive skills and learning outcomes by identifying two main categories. Some articles investigated the effects of ICT environments combined with metacognitive aspects of learning outcomes, while others investigated the reciprocal relationship between ICT and metacognition. In general, from our review, the interaction between ICT and metacognition in producing better learning outcomes appears well established and the results highlight a bi-directional relationship between metacognition and ICT, but also allow to draw attention to gaps requiring further research

    Parental Support during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Friend or Foe? A Moderation Analysis of the Association between Maternal Anxiety and Children’s Stress in Italian Dyads

    There is evidence that parental psychological disorders in stressful situations increase the risk of disturbance in child development. This has been investigated in disasters but not in pandemics, which are sensibly different from other types of traumatic events. We investigated the relationship between mothers’ anxiety and their children’s (self-reported) stress and the boundary conditions of this association during the first full COVID-19 lockdown in Italy. During the COVID-19 pandemic, mothers might have increased their protective attitudes to secure and support their children; we tested whether the relationship between mothers’ anxiety and children’s stress was weaker (buffer effect) or stronger (over-protection effect) when perceived parental support was high. We measured mothers’ anxiety, children’s perceived parental support, and children’s stress in a sample of 414 8- to 11-year-old primary school children (229 females, Mage = 9.44) and 395 mothers (Mage = 42.84). Results supported the over-protection scenario and provided the first evidence for the “helicopter-parent effect” during the COVID-19 pandemic: mothers’ anxiety was positively associated with children’s stress only when perceived support was high. Our finding highlights the importance of educating parents (for example, via emotional training) to prevent the worst consequences of adverse events in children and promote their mental health

    Sport identification, moral perceptions and collective action: A study with young football players

    We conducted a cross-sectional study investigating whether sport identification predicts different forms of collective action intentions aimed to redress the unfavourable condition faced by disadvantaged individuals. In doing so, moral perceptions (moral convictions, moral violation and moral obligation) were tested as mediators. Participants were young football players from the grassroots of a professional Italian club (N = 111). Results revealed that sport identification was indirectly associated with greater willingness to engage in both normative and non-normative solidarity-based collective action via stronger moral obligation perceptions; moral convictions mediated the relationship between sport identification and normative collective action, while no mediation effects emerged for moral violation. We discuss findings in relation to collective action and sport research

    The role of domain-specific and domain-general cognitive functions and skills in sports performance: A meta-analysis

    Cognition plays a key role in sports performance. In this meta-analytic review, we synthesize research that has examined the relationship between cognitive functions, skills, and sports performance. We identified literature by searching Cochrane library, PsychInfo, Pubmed, and Web of Science. We included studies conducted on competitive athletes, assessed cognitive prerequisites, and included performance measures related to the sport. Of the 9433 screened records, 136 reports were included, containing 142 studies, 1227 effect sizes, and 8860 participants. Only 11 studies used a prospective study design. The risk of bias was assessed using The Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Nonrandomized Studies. The multilevel meta- analysis showed a medium effect size for the overall difference in cognitive functions and skills, with higher-skilled athletes scoring better than lower-skilled athletes (Hedges’ g = 0.59, 95% CI [0.49, 0.69]). The moderator analysis showed larger effect size for tests of cognitive decision-making skills (g = 0.77, 95% CI [0.6, 0.94]) compared to basic (g = 0.39, 95% CI [0.21, 0.56]) and higher cognitive functions (g = 0.44, 95% CI [0.26, 0.62]), as well as larger effect size for sport-specific task-stimuli compared to general ones. We report that higher-skilled athletes perform better on tests of cognitive function compared to lower-skilled athletes. There was insufficient evidence to determine whether cognitive functions and skills can predict future sport performance. We found no evidence to support claims that tests of general cognitive functions, such as executive functioning, should be used by practitioners for talent identification or player selection

    Pedunculopontine arousal system physiology—Effects of psychostimulant abuse

    This review describes the interactions between the pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN), the ventral tegmental area (VTA), and the thalamocortical system. Experiments using modulators of cholinergic receptors in the PPN clarified its role on psychostimulant-induced locomotion. PPN activation was found to be involved in the animal?s voluntary search for psychostimulants. Every PPN neuron is known to generate gamma band oscillations. Voltage-gated calcium channels are key elements in the generation and maintenance of gamma band activity of PPN neurons. Calcium channels are also key elements mediating psychostimulant-induced alterations in the thalamic targets of PPN output.     On the relationship between M-Capacity development, expertise, and motor learning in young volleyball players

    Based on the results of a preliminary observational study, this experiment tested Pascual-Leone\u2019s Theory of Constructive Operators in the field of motor learning in volleyball. In particular, we investigated whether M Capacity represents a prerequisite to learn a specific technical gesture, the attack - and what role expertise has in this learning. 105 female volleyball players aged between 5 and 17, as well as a group of \u201cexperts\u201d (adults with at least 10 years of volleyball experience), took part in the experiment. This age range ensures a large variability of both M Capacity and experience. Participants were engaged in practical volleyball tests (of increasing difficulty, assessed through task analysis) and scored in terms of \u201ccorrect execution\u201d and \u201cprecision\u201d. M Capacity was measured as the average of Mr.Cucumber Test, Figural Intersections Test, and Direction Following Task. Each athlete also reported her expertise, in terms of years of practice and training sessions per week. The best predictor of correct execution (R2=.74) was M Capacity ( f=.55), whereas the years of volleyball experience were the only significant predictor of precision. These results pointed to a dissociation: while M Capacity represents the best predictor of correct motor performance, experience is the key to its neatness. Furthermore, in order to examine whether there is a minimum M Capacity below which each specific technical gesture cannot be accomplished, cross-classification prediction analysis was used. Most predictions derived from the initial task analysis were supported; the few exceptions provided useful information for a more accurate evaluation of task difficulty
