An Adventure in Topological Phase Transitions in 3 + 1-D: Non-abelian Deconfined Quantum Criticalities and a Possible Duality
Continuous quantum phase transitions that are beyond the conventional
paradigm of fluctuations of a symmetry breaking order parameter are challenging
for theory. These phase transitions often involve emergent deconfined gauge
fields at the critical points as demonstrated in 2+1-dimensions. Examples
include phase transitions in quantum magnetism as well as those between
Symmetry Protected Topological phases. In this paper, we present several
examples of Deconfined Quantum Critical Points (DQCP) between Symmetry
Protected Topological phases in 3+1-D for both bosonic and fermionic systems.
Some of the critical theories can be formulated as non-abelian gauge theories
either in their Infra-Red free regime, or in the conformal window when they
flow to the Banks-Zaks fixed points. We explicitly demonstrate several
interesting quantum critical phenomena. We describe situations in which the
same phase transition allows for multiple universality classes controlled by
distinct fixed points. We exhibit the possibility - which we dub "unnecessary
quantum critical points" - of stable generic continuous phase transitions
within the same phase. We present examples of interaction driven band-theory-
forbidden continuous phase transitions between two distinct band insulators.
The understanding we develop leads us to suggest an interesting possible 3+1-D
field theory duality between SU(2) gauge theory coupled to one massless adjoint
Dirac fermion and the theory of a single massless Dirac fermion augmented by a
decoupled topological field theory.Comment: 83 pages, 10 figure
Structural and Functional Aspects of Class A Carbapenemases.
The fight against infectious diseases is probably one of the greatest public health challenges faced by our society, especially with the emergence of carbapenem-resistant gram-negatives that are in some cases pan-drug resistant. Currently,β-lactamase-mediated resistance does not spare even the newest and most powerful β-lactams (carbapenems), whose activity is challenged by carbapenemases. The worldwide dissemination of carbapenemases in gram-negative organisms threatens to take medicine back into the pre-antibiotic era since the mortality associated with infections caused by these superbugs is very high, due to limited treatment options. Clinically-relevant carbapenemases belong either to metallo-β- lactamases (MBLs) of Ambler class B or to serine-β-lactamases (SBLs) of Ambler class A and D enzymes. Class A carbapenemases may be chromosomally-encoded (SME, NmcA, SFC-1, BIC-1, PenA, FPH-1, SHV-38), plasmid-encoded (KPC, GES, FRI-1) or both (IMI). The plasmid-encoded enzymes are often associated with mobile elements responsible for their mobilization. These enzymes, even though weakly related in terms of sequence identities, share structural features and a common mechanism of action. They variably hydrolyse penicillins, cephalosporins, monobactams, carbapenems, and are inhibited by clavulanate and tazobactam. Three-dimensional structures of class A carbapenemases, in the apo form or in complex with substrates/inhibitors, together with site-directed mutagenesis studies, provide essential input for identifying the structural factors and subtle conformational changes that influence the hydrolytic profile and inhibition of these enzymes. Overall, these data represent the building blocks for understanding the structure-function relationships that define the phenotypes of class A carbapenemases and can guide the design of new molecules of therapeutic interest
Perceived synchronization of mulsemedia services
Multimedia synchronization involves a temporal relationship between audio and visual media components. The presentation of "in-sync" data streams is essential to achieve a natural impression, as "out-of-sync" effects are often associated with user quality of experience (QoE) decrease. Recently, multi-sensory media (mulsemedia) has been demonstrated to provide a highly immersive experience for its users. Unlike traditional multimedia, mulsemedia consists of other media types (i.e., haptic, olfaction, taste, etc.) in addition to audio and visual content. Therefore, the goal of achieving high quality mulsemedia transmission is to present no or little synchronization errors between the multiple media components. In order to achieve this ideal synchronization, there is a need for comprehensive knowledge of the synchronization requirements at the user interface. This paper presents the results of a subjective study carried out to explore the temporal boundaries within which haptic and air-flow media objects can be successfully synchronized with video media. Results show that skews between sensorial media and multimedia might still give the effect that the mulsemedia sequence is "in-sync" and provide certain constraints under which synchronization errors might be tolerated. The outcomes of the paper are used to provide recommendations for mulsemedia service providers in order for their services to be associated with acceptable user experience levels, e.g. haptic media could be presented with a delay of up to 1 s behind video content, while air-flow media could be released either 5 s ahead of or 3 s behind video content
Difference of optical conductivity between one- and two-dimensional doped nickelates
We study the optical conductivity in doped nickelates, and find the dramatic
difference of the spectrum in the gap (\alt4 eV) between one- (1D)
and two-dimensional (2D) nickelates. The difference is shown to be caused by
the dependence of hopping integral on dimensionality. The theoretical results
explain consistently the experimental data in 1D and
2D nickelates, YCaBaNiO and LaSrNiO,
respectively. The relation between the spectrum in the X-ray aborption
experiments and the optical conductivity in LaSrNiO is
discussed.Comment: RevTeX, 4 pages, 4 figure
A Generalized Flow Regime Diagram for Fluid-Solid Vertical Transport
An ideal generalized flow regime diagram was proposed for fluid-solids vertical transport systems with no bottom and top restrictions. Such an ideal flow regime diagram was further extended to shed light onto the understanding of the flow regimes and instabilities encountered in bottom- restricted bubbling and circulating fluidized bed systems
Reputation-based network selection solution in heterogeneous wireless network environments
The significant developments in terms of both mobile computing device (e.g., smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.) and the wireless communication technologies (e.g., LTE, LTE-Advanced, WiMAX, etc.), lead towards a converged heterogeneous wireless environment. In this context, the user will be facing the problem of selecting from a number of Radio Access Networks that differ in technology, coverage, pricing scheme, bandwidth, latency, etc. In order to provide high quality of service (QoS) to the user in this heterogeneous wireless environment, a network selection solution is required that will efficiently facilitate the vertical handover between different wireless access networks in a seamless manner. In this paper, we propose a reputation-based network selection solution which aims to select the best value network for the user. We propose a network profiling algorithm that used to compute the reputation of each of the available networks based on the joint collaboration of the users within the network. The network with the best reputation value is recommended for selection and handover
Reputation-based network selection solution for improved video delivery quality in heterogeneous wireless network environments
The continuous innovations and advances in both high-end mobile devices and wireless communication technologies have increased the users demand and expectations for anywhere, anytime, any device high quality multimedia applications provisioning. Moreover, the heterogeneity of the wireless network environment offers the possibility to the mobile user to select between several available radio access network technologies. However, selecting the network that enables the best user perceived video quality is not trivial given that in general the network characteristics vary widely not only in time but also depending on the user location within each network. In this context, this paper proposes a user location-aware reputation-based network selection solution which aims at improving the video delivery in a heterogeneous wireless network environment by selecting the best value network. Network performance is regularly monitored and evaluated by the currently connected users in different areas of each individual network. Based on the existing network performance-related information and mobile user location and speed, the network that offers the best support for video delivery along the user’s path is selected as the target network and the handover is triggered. The simulation results show that the proposed solution improves the video delivery quality in comparison with the case when a classic network selection mechanism was employed
EFFECT OF DISTRIBUTOR DESIGN ON SOLIDS CIRCULATION AND GAS BYPASS IN AN INTERNAL CIRCULATING FLUIDIZED BED REACTOR
The effect of the distributor design on the gas bypass and solids circulation was investigated for the flat, cylindrical and conical gas distributors in a cold model internal circulating fluidized bed to provide design and operating criteria for the future application of ICFB deNOx reactor. A high gas bypass ratio from the annulus to draft tube and low from the draft tube to annulus were identified for all tested distributors. The solids circulation rates increased with the increase of both annulus and draft tube gas velocities, where the conical distributor exhibited a more flexible and stable operation. The particle size and the reactor configuration exhibited significant effects on the operating characteristics of the hot model ICFB reactor
Testing Lorentz Invariance with Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Spectrum
The GZK cutoff predicted at the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) spectrum
as been observed by the HiRes and Auger experiments. The results put severe
constraints on the effect of Lorentz Invariance Violation(LIV) which has been
introduced to explain the absence of GZK cutoff indicated in the AGASA data.
Assuming homogeneous source distribution with a single power law spectrum, we
calculate the spectrum of UHECRs observed on Earth by taking the processes of
photopion production, pair production and adiabatic energy loss into
account. The effect of LIV is also taken into account in the calculation. By
fitting the HiRes monocular spectra and the Auger combined spectra, we show
that the LIV parameter is constrained to
and respectively, which is well consistent
with strict Lorentz Invariance up to the highest energy.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D 12 pages, 4 figure
Bayesian Speaker Adaptation Based on a New Hierarchical Probabilistic Model
In this paper, a new hierarchical Bayesian speaker adaptation method called HMAP is proposed that combines the advantages of three conventional algorithms, maximum a posteriori (MAP), maximum-likelihood linear regression (MLLR), and eigenvoice, resulting in excellent performance across a wide range of adaptation conditions. The new method efficiently utilizes intra-speaker and inter-speaker correlation information through modeling phone and speaker subspaces in a consistent hierarchical Bayesian way. The phone variations for a specific speaker are assumed to be located in a low-dimensional subspace. The phone coordinate, which is shared among different speakers, implicitly contains the intra-speaker correlation information. For a specific speaker, the phone variation, represented by speaker-dependent eigenphones, are concatenated into a supervector. The eigenphone supervector space is also a low dimensional speaker subspace, which contains inter-speaker correlation information. Using principal component analysis (PCA), a new hierarchical probabilistic model for the generation of the speech observations is obtained. Speaker adaptation based on the new hierarchical model is derived using the maximum a posteriori criterion in a top-down manner. Both batch adaptation and online adaptation schemes are proposed. With tuned parameters, the new method can handle varying amounts of adaptation data automatically and efficiently. Experimental results on a Mandarin Chinese continuous speech recognition task show good performance under all testing conditions
