    Advanced propulsion system concept for hybrid vehicles

    A series hybrid system, utilizing a free piston Stirling engine with a linear alternator, and a parallel hybrid system, incorporating a kinematic Stirling engine, are analyzed for various specified reference missions/vehicles ranging from a small two passenger commuter vehicle to a van. Parametric studies for each configuration, detail tradeoff studies to determine engine, battery and system definition, short term energy storage evaluation, and detail life cycle cost studies were performed. Results indicate that the selection of a parallel Stirling engine/electric, hybrid propulsion system can significantly reduce petroleum consumption by 70 percent over present conventional vehicles

    The retrofit of a 1/4-W split-Stirling cooler with a linear driven on the displacer was achieved and its performance characterized. The objective of this work was to demonstrate that a small linear motor could be designed to meet the existing envelope specifications of the cooler and that an electric linear drive on the displacer could improve the cooler's reliability and performance.     Vibrations are produced during any machining process. For drilling operation, analysis of these vibrations plays an important role in order to predict phenomenon of ‘chatter’. This paper emphasizes the analysis of vibration during drilling operation. The output results of analysis are useful to find out amplitude of vibrations produced with respect to drill size and spindle speed for standard rate of recommended feed/min. Analysis is quantified and tabulated as per available machining parameters of ‘THAKUR PELTER DRILLING MACHINE’ which is present in the Workshop of Fr. Conceiceo Rodrigues Institute of Technology, Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The optimum values of spindle speed and feed for maximium amplitude of transverse vibrations with respect to drill size are highlighted in the table and brought to the notice of Workshop Superintendent. The table of formulated results is displayed near this drilling machine

    Studies on production of peptide antibiotic by thermotolerant Bacillus sp.

    The soil sample was collected and screened for isolation of higher antibiotic producing bacterial strain. The isolated bacterial strain was tentatively identified as Bacillus sp. by biochemical characters using Bergey’s manual. The present study is focused on the optimization of different parameters for production of peptide antibiotic (Bacitracin) using synthetic medium. The antibacterial activity of isolate was analyzed against S. aureus. The nutritional ingredients for bacitracin production were found as glucose (1%) and L-glutamic acid (0.5 %) as carbon and nitrogen source respectively. The prominent bacitracin production was obtained after 48 hrs incubation at 40°C temperature and at 7 pH

    Two Cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome Variants Presenting With Dysautonomia

    We describe 2 pediatric cases presenting with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome secondary to autonomic dysfunction preceding the onset of motor symptoms in Guillain-Barré syndrome variants. Patient 1 presented acutely with encephalopathy, cerebellar signs, hypertension, lower limb weakness, and respiratory decompensation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain showed occipital lesions consistent with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Nerve conduction studies were consistent with Miller-Fisher syndrome. After intravenous immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis, he improved clinically with radiological resolution. Patient 2 presented with headache, leg pain, seizures, and significant hypertension. Brain MRI was normal but spine MRI revealed enhancement of the cauda equina ventral nerve roots. She was areflexic with lower limb weakness a few days after intensive care unit admission and made a significant improvement after treatment with intravenous immunoglobulin. In children presenting with posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome in the absent of other causes of primary hypertension, Guillain-Barré syndrome variants are an important differential etiology, presenting with autonomic dysfunction, even before signs of motor weakness become evident

    Scleroderma: a case report

    Scleroderma is systemic multi organ autoimmune disorder characterized by hardening of skin. Also known as systemic sclerosis. Estimated annual incidences of approximately 19 cases per million persons. The limited skin disease has a 10-year survival rate of 71%, whereas those with diffuse skin disease have a 10-year survival rate of just 21%. Risk is higher in women than men and peak in individuals aged 30-50 years. It has no definitive treatment. It may be limited or diffuse depending upon manifestations of symptoms or signs affecting internal organs especially lungs, heart, or kidney. We report a case of scleroderma with pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease in our hospital who presented with tightening of skin, joint pain, dysphagia, and breathlessness. On examination skin appeared dark, shiny, and tight, with loss of hair, paraesthesia and digital ulceration. Patient also has history of Raynaud's phenomenon. On investigation, Scl-70 and ANA (antinuclear antibodies) by enzyme immunoassay came positive. HRCT thorax was suggestive of interstitial fibrosis and PFT revealed moderate restriction. On 2D echocardiography, mild pulmonary hypertension was present while barium swallow showed motility disorder involving oesophagus. On view of extensive systemic involvement like skin, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system and heart, we would like to present this rare disorder

    Fracture in Mode I using a Conserved Phase-Field Model

    We present a continuum phase-field model of crack propagation. It includes a phase-field that is proportional to the mass density and a displacement field that is governed by linear elastic theory. Generic macroscopic crack growth laws emerge naturally from this model. In contrast to classical continuum fracture mechanics simulations, our model avoids numerical front tracking. The added phase-field smoothes the sharp interface, enabling us to use equations of motion for the material (grounded in basic physical principles) rather than for the interface (which often are deduced from complicated theories or empirical observations). The interface dynamics thus emerges naturally. In this paper, we look at stationary solutions of the model, mode I fracture, and also discuss numerical issues. We find that the Griffith's threshold underestimates the critical value at which our system fractures due to long wavelength modes excited by the fracture process.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures (eps).
