The area or field of specialization is a choice every translator should make at the beginning of their professional career. In the current world economic situation, the maintenance of built heritage has been limited due to a lack of funds and accurate tools for proper management and implementation of these actions. However, in specific local areas, the maintenance and conservation of historical and cultural heritage have become an investment opportunity. In this sense, in this study, a new tool is proposed, for the estimation of the functional service life of heritage buildings in a local region (city of Seville, South Spain). This tool is developed in Art-Risk research project and consists of a free software to evaluate decisions in regional policies, planning and management of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, considering physical, environmental, economic and social resources. This tool provides a ranking of priority of intervention among case studies belonging to a particular urban context. This information is particularly relevant for the stakeholders responsible for the management of maintenance plans in built heritage

The purpose of this work is to translate and analyse a short story by Syrian author Rafik Schami, who lives in Germany and writes in German. This story, appended as an epilogue to the novel Das Geheimnis des Kalligraphen, has not been published in Spanish despite the interest of the topic: Arabic calligraphy and the figure of renowned calligrapher Ibn Muqla. The story titled Was ich schaffe, überdauert die Zeit has been translated from German into Spanish and the key concepts of calligraphic styles explained by Schami are reviewed. Furthermore, several calligraphed texts in Arabic included in the story are studied in a comparative analysis with the source and target texts. This work is an interdisciplinary approach to the difficulties of translating technical concepts in a third language other than the language combination of a particular translation. A secondary aim is to contribute to the dissemination of Schami’s works in Spain, especially as far as his thoughts on the reforms of the Arabic alphabet are concerned

This work focuses on the translation into German of web contents related to wine tourism in the region of Andalusia. A number of web sites for the promotion of tourism in the different Andalusian provinces were selected, as well as a series of web pages of Andalusian bodegas, in order to establish their availability in foreign languages. In the case of German translations, an analysis has been carried out as to the correctness of the texts and especially the treatment given to cultural references and terminology related to wine. The results show a heterogeneous landscape, with room for improvement regarding the accuracy and correctness of the texts. This study aim s to improve the promotion of Andalusian wine tourism products

Translation, Mediation and Accessibility for Linguistic Minorities

    Get PDF
Linguistic minorities are everywhere, and they are diverse. In this context, linguistic mediation activities – whether translation or interpreting – are key to the social inclusion of any kind of linguistic minority. In most societies autochthonous linguistic minorities coexist with foreignspeaking minorities and people with (or without) disabilities who rely linguistically or medially adapted on texts to access information. The present volume draws on this broad understanding of the concept of linguistic minorities to explore some of the newest developments in the field of translation studies and linguistics. The articles are structured around three main axes: • accessibility of content, especially audiovisual translation • intralingual translation, including initiatives regarding plain language, easy-to-read and easy language • mediation for minorities in a broader sense and language ideologies

A functional RNase P protein subunit of bacterial origin in some eukaryotes

    Get PDF
RNase P catalyzes 5′-maturation of tRNAs. While bacterial RNase P comprises an RNA catalyst and a protein cofactor, the eukaryotic (nuclear) variant contains an RNA and up to ten proteins, all unrelated to the bacterial protein. Unexpectedly, a nuclear-encoded bacterial RNase P protein (RPP) homolog is found in several prasinophyte algae including Ostreococcus tauri. We demonstrate that recombinant O. tauri RPP can functionally reconstitute with bacterial RNase P RNAs (RPRs) but not with O. tauri organellar RPRs, despite the latter’s presumed bacterial origins. We also show that O. tauri PRORP, a homolog of Arabidopsis PRORP-1, displays tRNA 5′-processing activity in vitro. We discuss the implications of the striking diversity of RNase P in O. tauri, the smallest known free-living eukaryote.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación European Regional Fund BFU2007-60651Junta de Andalucía P06-CVI-01692National Science Foundation MCB-0238233 MCB-0843543European Union ASSEMBLE 22779
