A Critical Examination of Halo White Dwarf Candidates
A detailed analysis of halo white dwarf candidates is presented, which is
based on model atmosphere fits to observed energy distributions built from
photoelectric or photographic magnitudes. Most of the candidates identified in
reduced proper motion diagrams are shown to be too warm (Teff > 5000 K) and
most likely too young to be members of the galactic halo, while the tangential
velocities of the cooler and thus older white dwarfs are shown to be entirely
consistent with the disk population. The results suggest that some white dwarf
stars born in the young disk may have high velocities with respect to the local
standard of rest. Such objects could represent the remnants of donor stars from
close mass-transfer binaries that produced type Ia supernovae via the single
degenerate channel, or other scenarios suggested in the literature. Ongoing
surveys that rely solely on reduced proper motion diagrams are likely to
identify more of these high velocity young degenerates, rather than to unveil
the old white dwarf population of the galactic halo. The importance of infrared

Analysis of general aviation single-pilot IFR incident data obtained from the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System
An analysis of incident data obtained from the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) has been made to determine the problem areas in general aviation single-pilot IFR (SPIFR) operations. The Aviation Safety Reporting System data base is a compilation of voluntary reports of incidents from any person who has observed or been involved in an occurrence which was believed to have posed a threat to flight safety. This paper examines only those reported incidents specifically related to general aviation single-pilot IFR operations. The frequency of occurrence of factors related to the incidents was the criterion used to define significant problem areas and, hence, to suggest where research is needed. The data was cataloged into one of five major problem areas: (1) controller judgment and response problems, (2) pilot judgment and response problems, (3) air traffic control (ATC) intrafacility and interfacility conflicts, (4) ATC and pilot communication problems, and (5) IFR-VFR conflicts. In addition, several points common to all or most of the problems were observed and reported. These included human error, communications, procedures and rules, and work load
General aviation single pilot IFR autopilot study
Five levels of autopilot complexity were flown in a single engine IFR simulation for several different IFR terminal operations. A comparison was made of the five levels of complexity ranging from no autopilot to a fully coupled lateral and vertical guidance mode to determine the relative benefits versus complexity/cost of state-of-the-art autopilot capability in the IFR terminal area. Of the five levels tested, the heading select mode made the largest relative difference in decreasing workload and simplifying the approach task. It was also found that the largest number of blunders was detected with the most highly automated mode. The data also showed that, regardless of the autopilot mode, performance during an IFR approach was highly dependent on the type of approach being flown. These results indicate that automation can be useful when making IFR approaches in a high workload environment, but also that some disturbing trends are associated with some of the higher levels of automation found in state-of-the-art autopilots
Orbit to orbit transportation
Orbital transfer vehicle propulsion options for SPS include both chemical (COTV) and electrical (EOTV) options. The proposed EOTV construction method is similar to that of the SPS and, by the addition of a transmitting antenna, may serve as a demonstration or precursor satellite option. The results of the studies led to the selection of a single stage COTV for crew and priority cargo transfer. An EOTV concept is favored for cargo transfer because of the more favorable orbital burden factor over chemical systems. The gallium arsenide solar array is favored over the silicon array because of its self annealing characteristics of radiation damage encountered during multiple transitions through the Van Allen radiation belt. Transportation system operations are depicted. A heavy lift launch vehicle (HLLV) delivers cargo and propellants to LEO, which are transferred to a dedicated EOTV by means of an intraorbit transfer vehicle (IOTV) for subsequent transfer to GEO. The space shuttle is used for crew transfer from Earth to LEO. At the LEO base, the crew module is removed from the shuttle cargo bay and mated to a COTV for transfer to GEO. Upon arrival at GEO, the SPS construction cargo is transferred from the EOTV to the SPS construction base by IOTV. Crew consumables and resupply propellants are transported to GEO by the EOTV. Transportation requirements are dominated by the vast quantity of materials to be transported to LEO and GEO
Spectroscopic analysis of DA white dwarfs from the McCook & Sion catalog
For some years now, we have been gathering optical spectra of DA white dwarfs
in an effort to study and define the empirical ZZ Ceti instability strip.
However, we have recently expanded this survey to include all the DA white
dwarfs in the McCook & Sion catalog down to a limiting visual magnitude of
V=17.5. We present here a spectroscopic analysis of over 1000 DA white dwarfs
from this ongoing survey. We have several specific areas of interest most
notably the hot DAO white dwarfs, the ZZ Ceti instability strip, and the DA+dM
binary systems. Furthermore, we present a comparison of the ensemble properties
of our sample with those of other large surveys of DA white dwarfs, paying
particular attention to the distribution of mass as a function of effective

Analysis of general aviation single-pilot IFR incident data obtained from the NASA aviation safety reporting system
Data obtained from the NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) data base were used to determine problems in general aviation single pilot IFR operations. The data examined consisted of incident reports involving flight safety in the National Aviation System. Only those incidents involving general aviation fixed wing aircraft flying under IFR in instrument meteorological conditions were analyzed. The data were cataloged into one of five major problem areas: (1) controller judgement and response problems; (2) pilot judgement and response problems; (3) air traffic control intrafacility and interfacility conflicts; (4) ATC and pilot communications problems; and (5) IFR-VFR conflicts. The significance of the related problems, and the various underlying elements associated with each are discussed. Previous ASRS reports covering several areas of analysis are reviewed
Parameter-free Stark Broadening of Hydrogen Lines in DA White Dwarfs
We present new calculations for the Stark broadening of the hydrogen line
profiles in the dense atmospheres of white dwarf stars. Our improved model is
based on the unified theory of Stark broadening from Vidal, Cooper & Smith, but
it also includes non-ideal gas effects from the Hummer & Mihalas occupation
probability formalism directly inside the line profile calculations. This
approach improves upon previous calculations that relied on the use of an
ad-hoc free parameter to describe the dissolution of the line wing opacity in
the presence of high electric microfields in the plasma. We present here the
first grid of model spectra for hot Teff >~ 12,000 K DA white dwarfs that has
no free parameters. The atmospheric parameters obtained from optical and UV
spectroscopic observations using these improved models are shown to differ
