Ideal Theory and "Ought Implies Can"
When we can’t live up to the ultimate standards of morality, how can moral theory give us guidance? We can distinguish between ideal and non-ideal theory to see that there are different versions of the voluntarist constraint, ‘ought implies can.’ Ideal moral theory identifies the best standard, so its demands are constrained by one version. Non-ideal theory tells us what to do given our psychological and motivational shortcomings and so is constrained by others. Moral theory can now both provide an ultimate standard and give us guidance; this view also gives us new insights into demandingness and blame
Lagrangian one-particle velocity statistics in a turbulent flow
We present Lagrangian one-particle statistics from the Risoe PTV experiment
of a turbulent flow. We estimate the Lagrangian Kolmogorov constant and
find that it is affected by the large scale inhomogeneities of the flow. The
pdf of temporal velocity increments are highly non-Gaussian for small times
which we interpret as a consequence of intermittency. Using Extended
Self-Similarity we manage to quantify the intermittency and find that the
deviations from Kolmogorov 1941 similarity scaling is larger in the Lagrangian
framework than in the Eulerian. Through the multifractal model we calculate the
multifractal dimension spectrum.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure
Down-to-earth economy: the discursive contribution of sustainable consumption and production debate
Sustainable consumption and production (SCP) is a topical concept as national SCP programmes have been drafted by several countries around Europe. This discourse analysis, based on interviews with Finnish SCP committee members, suggests that sustainable consumption and production can be a useful concept for approaching economy in a down-to-earth manner. It can enrich the environmental policy agenda that has long been dominated by technology-oriented ecological modernization. A critical point is, however, that the SCP depate is more concentrated on the needs of consumers than on the needs of poor, the initial focus of sustainable development. Moreover, ideas on how to really change consumption patterns seem to be scarce, scattered, and also contradictory among the SCP stakeholders
On powers of Stieltjes moment sequences, II
We consider the set of Stieltjes moment sequences, for which every positive
power is again a Stieltjes moment sequence, we and prove an integral
representation of the logarithm of the moment sequence in analogy to the
L\'evy-Khinchin representation. We use the result to construct product
convolution semigroups with moments of all orders and to calculate their Mellin
transforms. As an application we construct a positive generating function for
the orthonormal Hermite polynomials.Comment: preprint, 21 page
A Description of Lobbying as Advocacy Public Relations
This study defines lobbying as advocacy public relations. Data were collected from self-administered surveys of 222 registered lobbyists in Oregon. This study provides insight into a specialized group of public relations practitioners
New Algorithm to Investigate Neural Networks
Random cost simulations were introduced as a method to investigate
optimization problems in systems with conflicting constraints. Here I study the
approach in connection with the training of a feed-forward multilayer
perceptron, as used in high energy physics applications. It is suggested to use
random cost simulations for generating a set of selected configurations. On
each of those final minimization may then be performed by a standard algorithm.
For the training example at hand many almost degenerate local minima are thus
found. Some effort is spend to discuss whether they lead to equivalent
classifications of the data.Comment: 16 pages and 8 figures. Typos in eqn.(1) and various misleading

Review of Golem: Modern Wars and Their Monsters by Maya Barzilai
The golem crosses many borders. A popular culture icon and an enduring image of creative power, its hybridity contributes to its elusive nature. What it is and what it means shifts over time. Maya Barzilai\u27s Golem: Modern Wars and Their Monsters takes a unique approach. Deeply interdisciplinary, as one must be to explore such a complex and paradoxical figure, and drawing on religious, literary, cinematic, and historical contexts, Barzilai weaves a rich tapestry of golem narratives. All the while, Barzilai keeps a clear eye on the golem\u27s ongoing association with war, seeing its birth in the clay trenches of World War One and tracing its later evolution as emblematic of nuclear weapons, computer technology, and Israeli military policy
I Skate Therefore I Am: Athletic Identity Amongst Collegiate Level Hockey Players
This study explores athletic identity among men’s, women’s and sled hockey athletes and whether or not there is significant differences between the groups. An exploratory study was done that consisted of a quantitative survey that utilized the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, better known as the AIMS, in order to look in to the three types of athlete’s identity (Brewer, Van Raalte, & Linder, 1993). A snowball sample was used to garner participants from men’s, women’s and sled hockey teams from a moderately sized New England College, for the survey. There were 7 responses from each team, a total of 21 athletes participating. The aforementioned AIMS, was used to determine if there was significant difference with how the three types of athletes identified. The researchers found that there was significant difference in three areas: 1) athlete has many goals related to hockey 2) others seeing them as an athlete, and 3) the importance of others seeing them as an athlete. There was near significance in the AIMS Sum
