    Weak lensing of the Lyman-alpha forest

    The angular positions of quasars are deflected by the gravitational lensing effect of foreground matter. The Lyman-alpha forest seen in the spectra of these quasars is therefore also lensed. We propose that the signature of weak gravitational lensing of the forest could be measured using similar techniques that have been applied to the lensed Cosmic Microwave Background, and which have also been proposed for application to spectral data from 21cm radio telescopes. As with 21cm data, the forest has the advantage of spectral information, potentially yielding many lensed "slices" at different redshifts. We perform an illustrative idealized test, generating a high resolution angular grid of quasars (of order arcminute separation), and lensing the Lyman-alphaforest spectra at redshifts z=2-3 using a foreground density field. We find that standard quadratic estimators can be used to reconstruct images of the foreground mass distribution at z~1. There currently exists a wealth of Lya forest data from quasar and galaxy spectral surveys, with smaller sightline separations expected in the future. Lyman-alpha forest lensing is sensitive to the foreground mass distribution at redshifts intermediate between CMB lensing and galaxy shear, and avoids the difficulties of shape measurement associated with the latter. With further refinement and application of mass reconstruction techniques, weak gravitational lensing of the high redshift Lya forest may become a useful new cosmological probe.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, submitted to MNRA

    Noise Estimates for Measurements of Weak Lensing from the Lyman-alpha Forest

    We have proposed a method for measuring weak lensing using the Lyman-alpha forest. Here we estimate the noise expected in weak lensing maps and power spectra for different sets of observational parameters. We find that surveys of the size and quality of the ones being done today and ones planned for the future will be able to measure the lensing power spectrum at a source redshift of z~2.5 with high precision and even be able to image the distribution of foreground matter with high fidelity on degree scales. For example, we predict that Lyman-alpha forest lensing measurement from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument survey should yield the mass fluctuation amplitude with statistical errors of 1.5%. By dividing the redshift range into multiple bins some tomographic lensing information should be accessible as well. This would allow for cosmological lensing measurements at higher redshift than are accessible with galaxy shear surveys and correspondingly better constraints on the evolution of dark energy at relatively early times.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, submitted to MNRA

Arthur Cruickshank was part of the post-war generation of palaeontologists who laid the foundations on which today’s researchers build. Appropriately for someone from an expatriate Scots family living in Kenya, much of his work was on the extinct reptiles of the great southern palaeocontinent of Gondwana

    The assessment of risk is a critical part of child welfare agency practice. This review of the research literature on different instruments for assessing risk and safety in child welfare focuses on instrument reliability, validity, outcomes, and use with children and families of color. The findings suggest that the current actuarial instruments have stronger predictive validity than consensus-based instruments. This review was limited by the variability in definitions and measures across studies, the relatively small number of studies examining risk assessment instruments, and the lack of studies on case decision points other than the initial investigation

    Renal allograft recipients (RARs) have a well-documented increased incidence of viral warts and cutaneous neoplasia, particularly those with long graft life and high sun exposure. A clinicopathological survey of 69 RARs in south-east Scotland, with follow-up periods of up to 28 years after transplantation, revealed marked variation in patient susceptibility to cutaneous malignancy with concomitant variation in HPV prevalence. Skin cancers were found in 34 patients. Eight patients showed high susceptibility [defined as more than four intraepidermal carcinomas (IECs) or invasive squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs)] 42 had intermediate susceptibility (1-3 IECs or SCCs, or >3 keratoses) and 18 had low susceptibility (< or = 3 keratoses and no cancers). SCCs, IECs and keratoses from the high-susceptibility group were found to have greater prevalences of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA (56%, 45% and 50% respectively), than SCCs (0%) and IECs (33%) from intermediate-susceptibility RARs and keratoses (36%) from the combined intermediate- and low-susceptibility groups and compared with a group of immunocompetent controls (27%, 20% and 15% respectively). No differences in p53 protein accumulation, determined immunohistochemically, were observed in tumours from the three groups. Categorization of RARs by susceptibility to cutaneous malignancy provides clinically useful information, as significantly more high-susceptibility patients (38%) developed aggressive, potentially lethal anogenital or cutaneous squamous cell cancers than did patients in the intermediate group (5%, P=0.005) or the low-susceptibility group (0%)

    Whilst digital education is becoming a reality for schools there is a role for CCI research to move beyond researcher-led school engagements to other types of research that support schools and their staff to lead on the appropriation of digital technologies. One way to advance our understanding of this issue is to examine and consolidate reflections from cases of school technology appropriation. This half-day workshop seeks to capture the enabling practices as well as those that posed barriers within the school. The work will be oriented to further identify necessary changes at different levels: e.g., the organizational level (school), the level of the practitioners (teachers) the level the school community. The mind-set of all the involved actors will also be explored aiming to identify the structures and mechanisms that can support a culture of participation and of collective responsibility by including also students and their families in the process of technology integration and appropriation. Note: This workshop is offered in conjunction with "For the Long Run: Promoting Sustainable Use of Learning Technologies in Schools"to form a full day workshop exploring both the technical characteristics and the contextual factors of sustainable integration of learning technologies in schools
