Spin Supersolid in Anisotropic Spin-One Heisenberg Chain

We consider an S=1 Heisenberg chain with strong exchange (Delta) and single--ion uniaxial anisotropy (D) in a magnetic field (B) along the symmetry axis. The low energy spectrum is described by an effective S=1/2 XXZ model that acts on two different low energy sectors for a given window of fields. The vacuum of each sector exhibits Ising-like antiferromagnetic ordering that coexists with the finite spin stiffness obtained from the exact solution of the effective XXZ model. In this way, we demonstrate the existence of a spin supersolid phase. We also compute the full Delta-B quantum phase diagram by means of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation.Comment: 4+ pages, 2 fig

Unveiling Order behind Complexity: Coexistence of Ferromagnetism and Bose-Einstein Condensation

We present an algebraic framework for identifying the order parameter and the possible phases of quantum systems that is based on identifying the local dimension NN of the quantum operators and using the SU(N) group representing the generators of generalized spin-particle mappings. We illustrate this for NN=3 by presenting for any spatial dimension the exact solution of the bilinear-biquadratic SS=1 quantum Heisenberg model at a high symmetry point. Through this solution we rigorously show that itinerant ferromagnetism and Bose-Einstein condensation may coexist.Comment: 5 pages, 1 psfigur

Electron Spin Resonance of SrCu2(BO3)2 at High Magnetic Field

We calculate the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of the quasi-two-dimensional dimer spin liquid SrCu2(BO3)2 as a function of magnetic field B. Using the standard Lanczos method, we solve a Shastry-Sutherland Hamiltonian with additional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya (DM) terms which are crucial to explain different qualitative aspects of the ESR spectra. In particular, a nearest-neighbor DM interaction with a non-zero D_z component is required to explain the low frequency ESR lines for B || c. This suggests that crystal symmetry is lowered at low temperatures due to a structural phase transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 b&w figure

Sampling system for wheat (Triticum aestivum L) area estimation using digital LANDSAT MSS data and aerial photographs

A procedure to estimate wheat (Triticum aestivum L) area using sampling technique based on aerial photographs and digital LANDSAT MSS data is developed. Aerial photographs covering 720 square km are visually analyzed. To estimate wheat area, a regression approach is applied using different sample sizes and various sampling units. As the size of sampling unit decreased, the percentage of sampled area required to obtain similar estimation performance also decreased. The lowest percentage of the area sampled for wheat estimation with relatively high precision and accuracy through regression estimation is 13.90% using 10 square km as the sampling unit. Wheat area estimation using only aerial photographs is less precise and accurate than those obtained by regression estimation
