    Learn with SAT to Minimize B\"uchi Automata

    We describe a minimization procedure for nondeterministic B\"uchi automata (NBA). For an automaton A another automaton A_min with the minimal number of states is learned with the help of a SAT-solver. This is done by successively computing automata A' that approximate A in the sense that they accept a given finite set of positive examples and reject a given finite set of negative examples. In the course of the procedure these example sets are successively increased. Thus, our method can be seen as an instance of a generic learning algorithm based on a "minimally adequate teacher" in the sense of Angluin. We use a SAT solver to find an NBA for given sets of positive and negative examples. We use complementation via construction of deterministic parity automata to check candidates computed in this manner for equivalence with A. Failure of equivalence yields new positive or negative examples. Our method proved successful on complete samplings of small automata and of quite some examples of bigger automata. We successfully ran the minimization on over ten thousand automata with mostly up to ten states, including the complements of all possible automata with two states and alphabet size three and discuss results and runtimes; single examples had over 100 states.Comment: In Proceedings GandALF 2012, arXiv:1210.202

    THE EFFECT OF RESTRICTING THE VISUAL SENSE ON THE KINEMATICS AND KINETICS OF A CUTTING MANOEUVRE

    The purpose of this study is to investigate the kinematic and kinetic parameters when performing a cutting manoeuvre blindfolded. Male rugby and football players (n=7) performed a 60 degree cutting manoeuvre blindfolded and without restriction while recording kinetic and kinematic data. Restricting the vision led to a significant decrease of knee and hip flexion angle, a decreased inversion in the ankle and a tendency for higher knee-stiffness in the sagittal plane. The hip joint moment was significantly reduced while the knee joint moment was significantly increased. Considerable effects occurred in the kinematic and kinetic parameters, while the approach velocity and contact time showed trivial effects

    CHANGE OF SPRINTING BIOMECHANICS IN THE ACCELERATION PHASE WHILE RESTRICTING THE VISUAL AND HEARING SENSE

    Sprinting and short acceleration phases are common movements in rugby and football. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the running movement changed while senses were restricted. Nine rugby and football player performed in three conditions (no restriction, visual restriction and audivisual restriction) a 10m sprint. Kinematic and kinetic data were captured for step 4-6. The athletes ran significant faster than in the other two conditions although the contact time and stride cycle length did not significantly differ. A change could be seen in the extension moment of the hip and the ROM in the knee, both between no- and audivisual restriction. It was concluded that sensual restrictions effects the performance in a slowdown of the movement, but that during the 4-6 step only small changes seem to appear due to the visual restriction

    Status and perspectives of the CAST experiment

    Arık, Metin (Dogus Author) -- The conference paper was firstly submitted to 12th International Conference on Topics in Astroparticle and Underground Physics.The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) is currently the most sensitive axion helioscope designed to search for axions produced by the Primakoff process in the solar core. CAST is using a Large Hadron Collider (LHC) test magnet where axions could be converted into X-rays with energies up to 10 keV. During the phase I, the experiment operated with vacuum inside the magnet bores and covered axion masses up to 0.02 eV. In the phase II, the magnet bores were filled with a buffer gas (first 4He and later 3He) at various densities in order to extend the sensitivity to higher axion masses (up to f .18 eV). The phase II data taking was completed in 2011. So far, no evidence of axion signal has been found and CAST set the most restrictive experimental limit on the axion-photon coupling constant over a broad range of axion masses. The latest CAST results with 3He data in the mass range 0.39 eV < m a < 0.64 eV will be presented

    Latest results and prospects of the CERN Axion Solar Telescope

(Dogus Author) -- Yıldız, Süleyman Cenk (Dogus Author)The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment searches for axions from the Sun converted into few keV photons via the inverse Primakoff effect in the high magnetic field of a superconducting Large Hadron Collider (LHC) decommissioned test magnet. After results obtained with vacuum in the magnet pipes (phase I of the experiment) as well as with 4He the collaboration is now immersed in the data taking with 3He, to be finished in 2011. The status of the experiment will be presented, including a preliminary exclusion plot of the first 3He data. CAST is currently sensitive to realistic QCD axion models at the sub-eV scale, and with axion-photon couplings down to the ∼ 2 × 10-10 GeV -1, compatible with solar life limits. Future plans include revisiting vaccuum and 4He configurations with improved sensitivity, as well as possible additional search for non-standard signals from chamaleons, paraphotons or other WISPs. For the longer term, we study the feasibility of an altogether improved version of the axion helioscope concept, with a jump in sensitivity of about one order of magnitude in gaγ beyond CAST

    Building a database for energy sufficiency policies

    Sufficiency measures are potentially decisive for the decarbonisation of energy systems but rarely considered in energy policy and modelling. Just as efficiency and renewable energies, the diffusion of demand-side solutions to climate change also relies on policy-making. Our extensive literature review of European and national sufficiency policies fills a gap in existing databases. We present almost 300 policy instruments clustered into relevant categories and publish them as "Energy Sufficiency Policy Database". This paper provides a description of the data clustering, the set-up of the database and an analysis of the policy instruments. A key insight is that sufficiency policy includes much more than bans of products or information tools leaving the responsibility to individuals. It is a comprehensive instrument mix of all policy types, not only enabling sufficiency action, but also reducing currently existing barriers. A policy database can serve as a good starting point for policy recommendations and modelling, further research is needed on barriers and demand-reduction potentials of sufficiency policy instruments

    Solar axion search with the CAST experiment

The analysis of the data recorded during the first phase of the experiment with vacuum in the magnet pipes has resulted in the most restrictive experimental limit on the coupling constant of axions to photons. In the second phase, CAST is operating with a buffer gas inside the magnet pipes in order to extent the sensitivity of the experiment to higher axion masses. We will present the first results on the 4He data taking as well as the system upgrades that have been operated in the last year in order to adapt the experiment for the 3He data taking. Expected sensitivities on the coupling constant of axions to photons will be given for the recent 3He run just started in March 2008
