Confinement and Quantization Effects in Mesoscopic Superconducting Structures
We have studied quantization and confinement effects in nanostructured
superconductors. Three different types of nanostructured samples were
investigated: individual structures (line, loop, dot), 1-dimensional (1D)
clusters of loops and 2D clusters of antidots, and finally large lattices of
antidots. Hereby, a crossover from individual elementary "plaquettes", via
clusters, to huge arrays of these elements, is realized. The main idea of our
study was to vary the boundary conditions for confinement of the
superconducting condensate by taking samples of different topology and, through
that, modifying the lowest Landau level E_LLL(H). Since the critical
temperature versus applied magnetic field T_c(H) is, in fact, E_LLL(H) measured
in temperature units, it is varied as well when the sample topology is changed
through nanostructuring. We demonstrate that in all studied nanostructured
superconductors the shape of the T_c(H) phase boundary is determined by the

Fully Automatic and Real-Time Catheter Segmentation in X-Ray Fluoroscopy
Augmenting X-ray imaging with 3D roadmap to improve guidance is a common
strategy. Such approaches benefit from automated analysis of the X-ray images,
such as the automatic detection and tracking of instruments. In this paper, we
propose a real-time method to segment the catheter and guidewire in 2D X-ray
fluoroscopic sequences. The method is based on deep convolutional neural
networks. The network takes as input the current image and the three previous
ones, and segments the catheter and guidewire in the current image.
Subsequently, a centerline model of the catheter is constructed from the
segmented image. A small set of annotated data combined with data augmentation
is used to train the network. We trained the method on images from 182 X-ray
sequences from 23 different interventions. On a testing set with images of 55
X-ray sequences from 5 other interventions, a median centerline distance error
of 0.2 mm and a median tip distance error of 0.9 mm was obtained. The
segmentation of the instruments in 2D X-ray sequences is performed in a

Commensurate and Incommensurate Vortex States in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning Arrays
As a function of applied field, we find a rich variety of ordered and
partially-ordered vortex lattice configurations in systems with square or
triangular arrays of pinning sites. We present formulas that predict the
matching fields at which commensurate vortex configurations occur and the
vortex lattice orientation with respect to the pinning lattice. Our results are
in excellent agreement with recent imaging experiments on square pinning arrays

Individual and Multi Vortex Pinning in Systems with Periodic Pinning Arrays
We examine multi and individual vortex pinning in thin superconductors with
periodic pinning arrays. For multi-vortex pinning we observe peaks in the
critical current of equal magnitude at every matching field, while for
individual vortex pinning we observe a sharp drop in the critical current after
the first matching field in agreement with experiments. We examine the scaling
of the critical current at commensurate and incommensurate fields for varied
pinning strength and show that the depinning force at incommensurate fields
decreases faster than at the commensurate fields.Comment: 4 figuure
Opposite macrophage polarization in different subsets of ovarian cancer: observation from a pilot study
The role of the innate immune system in ovarian cancer is gaining importance. The relevance of tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) is insufficiently understood. In this pilot project, comprising the immunofluorescent staining of 30 biopsies taken from 24 patients with ovarian cancer, we evaluated the presence of total TAM (cluster of differentiation (CD) 68 expression), M1 (major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II expression), and M2 (anti-mannose receptor C type 1 (MRC1) expression), and the blood vessel diameter. We observed a high M1/M2 ratio in low-grade ovarian cancer compared to high-grade tumors, more total TAM and M2 in metastatic biopsies, and a further increase in total TAM and M2 at interval debulking, without beneficial effects of bevacizumab. The blood vessel diameter was indicative for M2 tumor infiltration (Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.65). These data mainly reveal an immune beneficial environment in low-grade ovarian cancer in contrast to high-grade serous ovarian cancer, where immune suppression is not altered by neoadjuvant therapy
Asymmetric Field Profile in Bose Glass Phase of Irradiated YBa2Cu3O7-d: Loss of Interlayer Coherence around 1/3 of Matching Field
Magneto-optical imaging in YBa2Cu3O7-d with tilted columnar defects (CD's)
shows an asymmetric critical-state field profile. The observed hysteretic shift
of the profile ridge (trough) from the center of the sample is explained by
in-plane magnetization originated from vortex alignment along CD's. The
extracted ratio of the in-plane to out-of-plane magnetization component has a
maximum at 1/5 of matching field () and disappears above ,
suggesting a reduction of interlayer coherence well bellow in the Bose
glass phase. Implications are discussed in comparison with the vortex liquid

Dynamic Phases of Vortices in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning
We present results from extensive simulations of driven vortex lattices
interacting with periodic arrays of pinning sites. Changing an applied driving
force produces a rich variety of novel dynamical plastic flow phases which are
very distinct from those observed in systems with random pinning arrays.
Signatures of the transition between these different dynamical phases include
sudden jumps in the current-voltage curves as well as marked changes in the
vortex trajectories and the vortex lattice order. Several dynamical phase
diagrams are obtained as a function of commensurability, pinning strength, and

Multiply quantized vortices in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates
Vortex configurations in rotating Bose-Einstein condensed gases trapped in
power-law and anharmonic potentials are studied. When the confining potential
is steeper than harmonic in the plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation,
vortices with quantum numbers larger than one are energetically favorable if
the interaction is weak enough. Features of the wave function for small and
