Rockonomics: The Economics of Popular Music

This paper considers economic issues and trends in the rock and roll industry, broadly defined. The analysis focuses on concert revenues, the main source of performers ' income. Issues considered include: price measurement; concert price acceleration in the 1990s; the increased concentration of revenue among performers; reasons for the secondary ticket market; methods for ranking performers; copyright protection; and technological change.

Partial reflections of radio waves from the lower ionosphere

The addition of phase difference measurements to partial reflection experiments is discussed, and some advantages of measuring electron density this way are pointed out. The additional information obtained reduces the requirement for an accurate predetermination of collision frequency. Calculations are also made to estimate the errors expected in partial-reflection experiments due to the assumption of Fresnel reflection and to the neglect of coupling between modes. In both cases, the errors are found to be of the same order as known errors in the measurements due to current instrumental limitations

Properties of the ground 3^3F2_2 state and the excited 3^3P0_0 state of atomic thorium in cold collisions with 3^3He

We measure inelastic collisional cross sections for the ground $^3$F$_2$ state and the excited $^3$P$_0$ state of atomic thorium in cold collisions with $^3$He. We determine for Th ($^3$F$_2$) at 800 mK the ratio $\gamma \approx 500$ of the momentum-transfer to Zeeman relaxation cross sections for collisions with $^3$He. For Th ($^3$P$_0$), we study electronic inelastic processes and find no quenching even after $10^6$ collisions. We also determine the radiative lifetime of Th ($^3$P$_0$) to be $\tau > 130$ ms. Vibrational quenching of the electronic ground state in ThO in cold collisions with 3^3He

We measure the ratio $\gamma$ of the momentum-transfer to the vibrational quenching cross section for the X ($^1\Sigma^+$), $\nu=1$, $\mathrm{J=0}$ state of molecular thorium monoxide (ThO) in collisions with atomic $^3$He between 800 mK and 2.4 K. We observe indirect evidence for ThO--He van der Waals' complex formation, which has been predicted by theory. We determine the 3-body recombination rate constant $\Gamma_3$ at 2.4 K, and establish that the binding energy E$_b >$ 4 K

TAXATION - COMMERCE CLAUSE - TAX BY SELLER STATE ON CONTRACT TO SELL INTERSTATE

Appellants were partners in the securities business with offices in New York City. In the course of their business they agreed to sell shares of stock to two firms, one engaged in business in Philadelphia, the other in Washington, D. C. The securities were mailed to banks in Philadelphia and Washington for delivery upon payment of sight drafts attached. Under the tax law of the state of New York, a tax was levied on the sale of this stock. Appellants sought a refund of the tax on the ground that the statute imposed an unconstitutional burden on interstate commerce. The Geography of Home: Systems Awareness in a Changing World

Climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our times, yet it continues to be a topic that is not addressed with the urgency and action that it fully deserves. This lack of understanding is largely due to discrepancies in the ways that climate science is communicated and taught to the general public. The recent declaration of the Anthropocene, a new geologic epoch named for the influence of humans on Earth, warrants new ways of communicating about climate change. Art allows for novel ways of understanding these issues and contrasts the typically elitist methods of climate communication that tend to remain in the hands of scientists and academics. Over the course of the last year, I have begun the process of writing a book that deconstructs the dichotomous fields of art and science. Through merging personal narratives and drawings with information about climate science, the Anthropocene, sense of place, and systems theory, I hope to form a cohesive narrative about what it is like to be a young person exploring these topics while on the precipice of the Anthropocene; the questions that have arisen, the concerns, the fear, the chaos, and the hope. The intended audience for the Geography of Home is anyone who is searching for a new type of climate communication, one that centers around personal experience and relationships between natural and social systems. By combining art and words into a graphic novel, The Geography of Home becomes a launching point for a new type of discourse and understanding of the rapidly evolving issues of the Anthropocene
