Locomotion Gait Optimization For Modular Robots; Coevolving Morphology and Control
This study aims at providing a control-learning framework capable of generating optimal locomotion patterns for the modular robots. The key ideas are firstly to provide a generic control structure that can be well-adapted for the different morphologies and secondly to exploit and coevolve both morphology and control aspects. A generic framework combining robot morphology, control and environment and on the top of them optimization and evolutionary algorithms are presented. The details of the components and some of the preliminary results are discussed. (C) Selection and peer-review under responsibility of FET11 conference organizers and published by Elsevier B.V
Efficient Online Monitoring and Formula Synthesis with Past STL
In online monitoring, it is crucial to detect a deviation from normal behavior as soon as it occurs. During online monitoring, the system traces are checked against monitoring rules in real-time to detect such deviations. In general, the rules are defined as boundary conditions by the experts of the monitored system. In this work, we study the problem of synthesizing online monitoring rules in the form of temporal logic formulas in an automated way. We describe the monitoring rules as past time signal temporal logic (ptSTL) formulas and propose an algorithm to synthesize such formulas from a given set of labeled system traces. The algorithm searches the formula space for a predefined number of operators in an efficient way and produce the best formula representing a monitoring rule. In addition, we improve online STL monitoring algorithm to efficiently compute a quantitative valuation for piecewise-constant signals from ptSTL formulas, thus, reduce the overhead of the the real-time computation

Temporal logic model predictive control for discrete time systems
This paper proposes an optimal control strategy for a discrete-time linear system constrained to satisfy a temporal logic specification over a set of linear predicates in its state variables. The cost is a quadratic function that penalizes the distance from desired state and control trajectories. The specification is a formula of syntactically co-safe Linear Temporal Logic (scLTL), which can be satisfied in finite time. It is assumed that the reference trajectories are only available over a finite horizon and a model predictive control (MPC) approach is employed. The MPC controller solves a set of convex optimization problems guided by the specification and subject to progress constraints. The constraints ensure that progress is made towards the satisfaction of the formula with guaranteed satisfaction by the closed-loop trajectory. The algorithms proposed in this paper were implemented as a software package that is available for download. Illustrative case studies are included
Synthesis of Monitoring Rules via Data Mining
In online monitoring of critical systems, it is important to detect an abnormal behavior as early as possible. Signal temporal logic (STL) formulas are used to specify these undesired behaviors due to the expressivity and interpretability of the logic and the existence of efficient online monitoring algorithms. In this paper, we present a new method to synthesize formulas that belong to past time fragment of STL from a labeled dataset. In particular, we consider a dataset that includes signals and their labels marking the moment of occurrence of undesired behaviors, and propose a formula synthesis algorithm based on data mining algorithms. We first transform the dataset into a new dataset with attributes encoding basic temporal formulas, then learn a classifier from the transformed dataset and finally generate a ptSTL formula from the classifier. The proposed method requires much less computational time compared to similar algorithms and achieves competitive detection performance as shown in the case studies. © 2019 American Automatic Control Council
Clock Reduction in Timed Automata While Preserving Design Parameters
Timed automata (TA) are widely used to model and verify real-time systems. In a TA, the real valued variables, called clocks, measure the time passed between events. The verification of TA is exponential in the number of clocks. That constitutes a bottleneck for its application in large systems. To address this issue, we propose a novel clock reduction method. We aim at reducing the number of clocks by developing a position (location and transition) based mapping for clocks. Motivated by that the locations and transitions of the automaton reflect the modeled system's physical properties and design parameters; the proposed method changes the clock constraints based on their positions to reduce the total number of clocks. To guarantee correctness, we prove that the resulting automaton is timed bisimilar to the original one. Finally, we present empirical results for the solution, which show that the proposed method significantly reduces the clock count without changing design parameters of the system
Synthesis of Controllable ptSTL Formulas
In this work, we develop an approach to anomaly detection and prevention problem using Signal Temporal Logic (STL). This approach consists of two steps: detection of the causes of the anomalities as STL formulas and prevention of the satisfaction of the formula via controller synthesis. This work focuses on the first step and proposes a formula template such that any controllable cause can be represented in this template. An efficient algorithm to synthesize formulas in this template is presented. Finally, the results are shown on an example
Learning Parameters of ptSTL Formulas with Backpropagation
In this paper, a backpropagation based algorithm is presented to learn parameters of past time Signal Temporal Logic (ptSTL) formulas. A differentiable weight matrix over the parameter values and a loss function based on the mismatch value of the corresponding formulas over the labeled dataset are used in the algorithm. Analysis over a sample dataset shows that the algorithm solves the ptSTL parameter synthesis problem in an efficient way
