Fluorescence spectroscopy and its applications: A Review

    Get PDF
Fluorescence spectroscopy is a rapid, sensitive method for characterizing molecular environments and events samples. Fluorimetry is chosen for its extraordinary sensitivity, high specificity, simplicity and low cost as compared to other analytical techniques. It is widely accepted and powerful technique that is used for a variety of environmental, industrial, medical diagnostics, DNA sequencing, forensics, genetic analysis and biotechnology applications. It is a valuable analytical tool for both quantitative and qualitative analysis. This article presents a brief overview of the theory of fluorescence spectroscopy, together with examples of applications of this technique in organic and inorganic chemistry, medical diagnosis, medical science etc

ASSESSMENT OF PSYCHOSOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF COVID-19 IN DIABETES PATIENTS: A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Objective: The aim of the study was to assess the psychosocial health, to identify coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) specific concerns in people with diabetes and to analyze the changes in the management of diabetes during the corona crisis. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted for a period of 6 months among the South Indian diabetes population. A validated questionnaire containing socio-demographics, general health status, the diabetes distress scale 17, and the 3-itemUCLA loneliness scale was sent to 600 people, out of which 226 participants were included in the study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Responses were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regressions. Results: Among the participants, females had moderate to high diabetes distress (54.4%). The subjects in the age group of 40тАУ59 years felt lonely and had more diabetes distress. The two major worries among the participants were that тАЬthey are labeled as a risk groupтАЭ and that тАЬthey might be overly affected.тАЭ Participants with gestational diabetes mellitus (DM), DM duration of 7 months to 1 year, taking both medications (oral antidiabetic medication and insulin), HbA1c level of more than 8%, infected with coronavirus or having someone close to them infected with coronavirus, were more concerned about taking medication daily, and those who changed their meal plan during the corona period had the greatest concerns. Conclusion: People who participated in the survey were more worried about the COVID-19 situation and were very disturbed. Psychosocial consequences of COVID-19 were more prevalent in diabetes patients, including diabetes distress, loneliness, and changes in daily diabetes management

Seismic Pounding of Bridges due to Multi-Support Excitation with traveling wave

    Get PDF
Abstract: -Among structural damages, seismic induced pounding has been commonly observed in severalearthquakes. When lateral and transverse movement of a structure occurs during earthquakes, it will hit adjacent structure and bounce back. This back and forth hitting of adjacent structures is known as pounding. The earthquake ground motion is usually assumed as uniform dynamic motion in seismic analysis. This assumption may be inadequate for structures placed at large areas like bridge, dam etc. Pounding in bridges is a result of the relative movement of the adjacent bridge superstructures at the expansion joints. This movement depends on different structural dynamic properties of the adjacent spans and characteristics of ground motions at the pier supports along the bridge. This paper includes a study of effect of pounding between bridge superstructures under the action of earthquake motion having multi-support excitation with traveling effect. The present study is a numerical investigation of pounding effect on a simply supported bridge using finite element method, using the software, OpenSees

Some observations on the beaked sea snake Enhydrina schistosa (Daudin, 1803) in the mudbank area, off Alapuzha, Kerala, southwest coast of India

    Get PDF
Hook-nosed sea snake or beaked snake, Enhydrina schistosa were caught during experimental fishing operations in the mudbank region along central Kerala Coast at depths ranging from 6 to 12 m. The sea snakes were found to form aggregations of 5 to 6 numbers and were able to tolerate highly turbid waters. The catfish Arius jella and the puffer fish Lagocephalus inermis were the dominant prey items. mudbanks are unusually calm areas which form along the Kerala coast during the monsoon. The inshore waters including the mudbanks are intense fishing areas of non mechanized crafts during the monsoon. The presence of venomous sea snakes is precarious and there is a need to give awareness programme for the fishers about this danger

During the routine biological investigations on Epinephelus diacanthus (Spiny cheek grouper), a fish with a pair of cysts attached to the abdominal musculature was observed. The cysts were oval, thin-walled, dark grey coloured, measured approximately 3 cm in diameter, and located adjacent to each other

Sequential development of histopathological manifestations in response to experimental infection of Vibrio alginolyticus in Asian Seabass

    Get PDF
Asian seabass (Lates calcarifer), an important species for mariculture in the Asia-Pacific region, has been threatened by various infectious diseases hampering the profitability of its aquaculture. Vibriosis is the most common disease leading to considerable mortality and economic loss. Recent studies revealed that Vibrio alginolyticus is one of the most common species that causes vibriosis in farmed aquatic animals, including L. calcarifer. Despite our understanding of the aetiology, there is little information on the subsequent histological changes following experimental infection in fish. The present study fills this gap by investigating the sequential histopathological alterations in Asian seabass post intraperitoneal injection with V. alginolyticus. Significant organ changes were seen in the spleen, kidneys, liver, and to a lesser extent, the gills. The findings revealed an initial latency before major tissue responses occurred, with the kidney exhibiting the earliest and most severe changes. The spleen and liver also showed substantial alterations, while the gills showed minor changes. Experimental V. alginolyticus infection resulted in 90-95% mortality within 24-48 hours post-challenge. Our findings contribute to a more thorough understanding of histological changes in Asian seabass during V. alginolyticus infection, highlighting the importance of disease progression, and mitigation measures

Thin Film Growth and Device Fabrication of Iron-Based Superconductors

Iron-based superconductors have received much attention as a new family of high-temperature superconductors owing to their unique properties and distinct differences from cuprates and conventional superconductors. This paper reviews progress in thin film research on iron-based superconductors since their discovery for each of five material systems with an emphasis on growth, physical properties, device fabrication, and relevant bulk material properties.Comment: To appear in J. Phys. Soc. Jp
