Cylindrical active coated nano-particles excited by electric and magnetic line sources

Cylindrical active coated nano-particles comprised of a silica nano-cylinder core covered with a plasmonic nano-shell are investigated with regard to their near- and far-field properties. The source of excitation is taken to be an electric or a magnetic line current, while three different plasmonic materials are employed for the nano-shells, namely silver, gold and copper. © 2011 EurAAP

Eosinophile tissue infiltration as predictor in nasosinus mucous membrane disease

    No full text
Nasal polyp is, strictly speaking, hyperplastic mucous membrane of nose and sinuses. Based on epidemiological data several aethyopathogenesis theories had evolved, most common being infection and allergy. Both converge and diverge and have pros and cons of their own but both have several common factors that are implied, including eosinophiles, interleukine 6, VEGF and IgE.Course of disease is frustrating both for clinician and patient. Thus, it is important to establish factors predictive to course of disease.Aim of this paper is to examine weather number of tissue eosinophiles is predictive to gravity of disease and its tendency to relapse after surgery. Study shall encompass 40 patients of both sexes and all ages.Eosinophile infiltration shall be examined in vivo, prior to operation and postoperatively. It is expected that greater eosinophile count contributes to gravity of disease.Der Erstautor gibt keinen Interessenkonflikt an

A 5-year epidemiological and pathological survey of papillary thyroid carcinoma

In a 5-year time span a total of 41 patents with thyroid pappilary carcinoma was treated at ENT clinic of Sarajevo University. All patients underwent total thyroidectomy with neck dissection.Survey focused on major epidemiological and pathological characteristics of disease in order to examine trends of behaviour. At 16 patients (39,1%) there was a solitary carcinoma present, at 25 (60,9%) it was adjoined with thyroid goiter, at 9 concomitant goiter and adenoma were present and at 5 patients (6,8%) concomitant Mb Hashimoto and Mb Basedow were present. One patient had both papillary and follicular carcinoma present in removed thyroid gland.Median age was found to be 50, with females being afflicted more than males at 32 (78,1%) vs. 9 (21,9%). Median dimension of papillary carcinoma was found to be 1,67 cm. 20 (48,7%) were found to be papillary micro-carcinomas according to their size being less then 1 cm.Intraglandular dissemination amongst micro-carcinomas was present at 26% whilst loco-regional metastasis was recorded at 21% of carcinomas. Larger carcinomas (more than 1 cm) gave intraglandular dissemination in 37% of cases and loco-regional metastasis in 33%.Papillary microcarcinomas showed markedly less aggressive behavior compared to papillary carcinomas with less frequent intraglandular dissemination and metastasis..Papillary carcinoma was more aggressive when recorded in younger individuals and of male gender.Der Erstautor gibt keinen Interessenkonflikt an

Skin transplant in patients with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome as a viable solution for covering skin defects

    No full text
Basal cell naevus syndrome is a rare condition which is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with complete penetrance and variable expressivity. Syndrome is found in all races. Gene responsible has been localized in chromosome 9q22.1-q31, in the PTCH gene, suppressor gene.Men and women are affected equally. The patient described in the following illustrative case is a 41 year old female with basal cell nevus syndrome. The patient was adopted and her family history is unknown. Physical examination: multiple, exulcerate, basal cell carcinoma were evident, multiple palmar and plantar pits, marked bifrontal bossing broadened nasal root, mild hipertelorism, strabismus, exaggerated length of the mandibule, Sprengal deformity, pectus carinatum. Histopathological examination of excised skin tissue: basal cell carcinoma. Surgery is not a option for treatment of Gorlin- Goltz syndrome. Attempts of transplantation of skin in paces of defects failed. Skin was rejected. It is not a therapeutic procedure for treatment of skin defects that develop in disease. They should receive treatment with irradiation, application of isotretionin or acitretin.Der Erstautor gibt keinen Interessenkonflikt an

Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica: a cause of difficulte intubation

    No full text
Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TPO) is a rare benign disorder of the lower part of the trachea and the upper part of the main bronchii. It was first described in the middle of the 19th century and since then, approximately 300 cases have been reported. A higher incidence on TPO was seen in northern Europe countries, especially Finland. Because many cases are asymptomatic TPO is mainly diagnosed post mortem. Symptomes can range from productive or non productive cough, haemoptysis, dyspnoea, dryness of the throat, recurrent pulmonary infections or ozaena. In severe cases diagnosis is made during difficult or failed intubation. Mild cases are treated symptomaticaly. In our paper we presented case of famale patient admitted in hospital for operative treatment of nasal septal deviation and chronic inflammation of both maxillary sinuses. Patient had nonspecific symptoms of frequent infections of upper respiratory tract infections and dispnea. She was prepared for general anesthesia. Attempt of intubation failed. Operative treatment was delayed. Diagnostic procedures showed TPO. TPO was confirmed by typical histological findings by bronchoscopic biopsy. Characteristic bronchoscopic finding is described as beaded, speculated, roch garden, cobble stoned or stalactive grotto appearance. In most cases disease progress very slowly although progression have been reported eventually leading to respiratory insufficiency. Difficulties during intubation or failed intubation must be well diagnosed. TPO can be main reason for that. Keywords: tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica, disorder, trachea, intubationDer Erstautor gibt keinen Interessenkonflikt an
