A study of the Eastern Pacific fishery for tuna baitfishes, with particular reference to the anchoveta (Cetengraulis mysticetus)

ENGLISH: Most of the catches of yellowfin and skipjack tuna from the Eastern Pacific Ocean are made by vessels fishing with poles and lines and live bait. From 1931 to 1954, these baitboats, on the average, accounted for over three-fourths of the total annual California landings of yellowfin and skipjack (Shimada and Schaefer, 1956). With the substantial increase in recent years in the production of the tropical tunas, there have been greater demands for live bait. This increased need for larger amounts of baitfishes has given rise to important questions relating to the manner in which these populations may be most wisely used. The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has been concerned with various aspects of this problem since its establishment in 1950. This report presents some of the results obtained from the Commission's studies of the baitfishes important to the fishery for yellowfin and skipjack tuna. It traces briefly the origin and development of the bait fishery, describes its operations, extent, and yield, and discusses some aspects of the effects of exploitation upon the Eastern Pacific baitfish populations, particularly of the anchoveta (Cetengaulis mysticetus). Background: Despite efforts to educate individuals about the hazards of smoking, pregnant women continue to smoke. In the literature, there is less evidence about successful abstinence strategies for low-income women. The purpose of this pilot study was to assess smoking behaviors and factors that support smoking abstinence in low-income pregnant women. Methods: Using a longitudinal design, quantitative and qualitative data were collected from pregnant women at a low-income community prenatal clinic. Based on the Transtheoretical model, all subjects received information about the harmful effects of smoking and secondhand exposure, while current smokers were given a “quit kit” and contacted up to one year post-delivery to evaluate smoking behaviors. Results: All subjects (N = 135) ranged in age from 18 to 41; 75% were not married; 78% had household incomes \u3c $30,000; and the majority were African American (40%). Fifty-five (40.7%) never smoked while 77(57%) had a smoking history, of these 18(23%) were spontaneous quitters. Data indicated that 36% reported smoking during pregnancy, with the majority in pre-contemplation. After one year, 18% of current smokers quit. Conclusions: Without a specific plan, the majority were unable to successfully abstain. Rate of abstinence may have been further influenced because subjects began smoking at an early age and were unsuccessful at previous quit attempts. Providers must continue to educate pregnant women but also evaluate strategies that require few provider visits, are cost effective, focus on relapse prevention, and can successfully influence smoking abstinence in low-income pregnant women

The Status of Middle Schools in the Southeastern United States: Perceptions and Implementation of the Middle School Model

    Get PDF
For more than 100 years, education communities have debated how best to educate the young adolescent. Proponents of both the junior high school model and the current middle school model have advocated for a specialized approach to educating adolescents that emphasizes the developmental needs of students. To accomplish this, various organizational structures and instructional approaches are recommended. This survey study examines the perceptions of these middle school practices and the implementation of those practices in middle schools in the Southeastern region of the United States. We note several key trends in our results and highlight key differences in perception of importance and implementation of middle school components and strategies compared to the most recent large scale survey administered by McEwin and Greene (2011)

A review of the population structure of yellowfin tuna, Thunnus albacares, in the Eastern Pacific Ocean

ENGLISH: Since its inception in 1950 by agreement between the Republic of Costa Rica and the United States of America, the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission has been engaged in studies of the biology, ecology and population dynamics of yellowfin tuna in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Prime consideration has been given to the evaluation of the effects of fishing pressure on the yellowfin tuna in this area in order to estimate the maximum sustainable yield. A portion of the eastern Pacific has been defined by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (1963) as a regulatory area for yellowfin tuna (Figure 1). (PDF contains 60 pages.

A Verbal Snapshot of Visual Scrutiny Primarily in the Sphere of Art

Finding and extracting meaning from the world I encounter every day is the primary motivation behind my creativity. Filtering perception and separating the important bits of information by selection or elimination is the crux of this investigation. This process is one of finding rationale in futility and applying meaning to meaningless encounters. The significance of life is not fixed and it is our responsibility to make it up to best suit the desire to have purpose. Depending on the way something is looked at determines the meaning behind it. Anything can have content if it is seen and translated a certain way. Aligning this inquiry to the course of painting is how I examine the pieces of information that have potential importance. Painting allows me to slow down, scrutinize, and evaluate the way I perceive reality. Every image seems unrelated but is actually connected by an undercurrent of doubt at every level of creation

Relay coordination with multiple breaker-in/breaker-out stations on the transmission line

    Get PDF
The main purpose of power system protection is to remove faults from the system as soon as possible so minimum damage happens to the transmission line or other equipment connected to the line. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) planners want to add multiple breaker-in/breaker-out stations on a two terminal transmission lines to reduce the number of Customer Connection Point Interruption (CCPI). This paper discusses the difficulty of setting up the zone distance relays and overcurrent relays when multiple breaker-in/breaker-out stations are added on the transmission line. It explains how many breakers can safely be added without compromising the zone 2 time delay of 50 cycles (limit imposed by TVA), how to set distance relay for phase faults and instantaneous overcurrent as well as time overcurrent relay for ground fault. It makes recommendation for not placing the breaker-in/breaker-out stations at a certain distance on transmission line and also talks about the maximum line loadability according to NERC standard PRC-023 when zone 2 of the distance element is set higher than 130%

Analogs of Schur functions for rank two Weyl groups obtained from grid-like posets

In prior work, the authors, along with M. McClard, R. A. Proctor, and N. J. Wildberger, studied certain distributive lattice models for the "Weyl bialternants" (aka "Weyl characters") associated with the rank two root systems/Weyl groups. These distributive lattices were uniformly described as lattices of order ideals taken from certain grid-like posets, although the arguments connecting the lattices to Weyl bialternants were case-by-case depending on the type of the rank two root system. Using this connection with Weyl bialternants, these lattices were shown to be rank symmetric and rank unimodal, and their rank generating functions were shown to have beautiful quotient-of-products expressions. Here, these results are re-derived from scratch using completely uniform and elementary combinatorial reasoning in conjunction with some new combinatorial methodology developed elsewhere by the second listed author.Comment: 15 page
