Erythrocyte as a link between basic and clinical research
© 2011 – IOS Press and the authorsWe review the major hemorheological experimental studies that show the erythrocyte aggregation as a link between basic and clinical research. The results of the clinical cross-sectional and longitudinal studies presented here will highlight the possible association between erythrocyte aggregation and plasma fibrinogen. Basic studies conducted in vitro are also mentioned as for its relevance in answering questions raised in clinical settings, as well as and in understanding the underlying influent factors in the erythrocyte tendency to aggregate and disaggregate. This work was supported by

Brane bounce-type configurations in a string-like scenario
Brane world six dimensional scenarios with string like metric has been
proposed to alleviate the problem of field localization. However, these models
have been suffering from some drawbacks related with energy conditions as well
as from difficulties to find analytical solutions. In this work, we propose a
model where a brane is made of a scalar field with bounce-type configurations
and embedded in a bulk with a string-like metric. This model produces a sound
AdS scenario where none of the important physical quantities is infinite. Among
these quantities are the components of the energy momentum tensor, which have
its positivity ensured by a suitable choice of the bounce configurations.
Another advantage of this model is that the warp factor can be obtained
analytically from the equations of motion for the scalar field, obtaining as a
result a thick brane configuration, in a six dimensional context. Moreover, the
study of the scalar field localization in these scenario is done.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures. To appear in Physics Letters
Reducibility of joins involving some locally trivial pseudovarieties
In this paper, we show that sigma-reducibility is preserved under joins with K, where K is the pseudovariety of semigroups in which idempotents are left zeros. Reducibility of joins with D, the pseudovariety of semigroups in which idempotents are right zeros, is also considered. In this case, we were able to prove that sigma-reducibility is preserved for joins with pseudovarieties verifying a certain property of cancellation. As an example involving the semidirect product, we prove that Sl*K is k-tame, where Sl stands for the pseudovariety of semilattices.FCT through the Centro de Matemática da Universidade do MinhoEuropean Community Fund FEDE
