Prescholers’ interpersonal coping mechanisms were assessed in Hungarian kindergarten groups (n = 458) belonging to the Romanian Educational System. The study investigates the prevalence of coping mechanisms specific to preschoolers and the differences between the age- groups of 3-4, 4-5, 5-7 years. We obtained measures with Coping Strategies Questionnaire both from children and teachers. We found helpseeking from adult to be the most often used coping in situations of interpersonal conflict. Regarding to age differences, coping mechanisms of negotiation, opposition, seeking for support are characteristic for older children, whereas emotional response and avoidance for the younger ones. Results show that coping strategies based on communication and cooperation are taking the place of emotion-focus strategies with the age

Cigarette consumption might be considered as a lifestyle model. The formation of this lifestyle model in childhood and adolescence is considerable due to the socio-cultural environment in which socialization take part. The aim of this study was to analyze adolescents’ smoking behavior, and family-related factors that may influence it. The self-reported questionnaire-based study was done in Mures, Harghita and Covasna counties among 7 th and 8 th grades students. The prevalence of smoking was 5.9% in the total sample. The results showed significant associations between smoking behavior of young people and their family background (e.g. education of parents, smoking bans at home)

Community-based strategies to promote smoking prevention and cessation are needed to reinforce national tobacco control policies. We conducted a study to assess the smoking behavior and attitudes of 13–14 years old students from three Transylvanian counties before and after a community-based intervention to reduce smoking. Pre-intervention results showed significantly higher odds of smoking among students attending lower quality schools, or having poorer school achievement, while students having more knowledge about the consequences of smoking were less likely smokers. Smoking patterns of adolescents were influenced by the behavior of friends, classmates, living environment, and their community activities (e.g. higher community activity increased the odds of smoking). The results suggest the importance of cultural models and characteristics of the community during the interventional preventive programs. Participation in community activities can lead to positive outcomes if positive values and health-conscious behaviors are offered to adolescents in the community

The new smoke free law (no. 15/2016) which bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces was accepted by the Romanian parliament in March 2016. We hypothesized that teenagers’ smoking prevalence can be reduced with appropriate sociopolitical constraints. The aim of our research was to assess the teenagers’ awareness of the law, and the changes occurred in their attitude and smoking behaviour between 2014 and 2016. Our cross-sectional study used self-administered questionnaires, completed by 7th grade students. The randomly stratified sample involved students from 21 localities, 21 schools, 55 classes from three Transylvanian counties. The results showed that those who were considered to be tobacco consumers smoked significantly less cigarettes after the implementation of the new law than before (an average of 3.51 sticks to 5.72 sticks, p<0,001). Compared to 2014, in 2016 the smoking trends have changed, the usage of classical tobacco became less frequent, the electronic cigarette, the hookah, the homemade cigarette and cigar or the pipe have gained more popularity. The perception of the new law is positive, still highly influenced by smoking habits, since non-smokers have a more favourable attitude in this direction than the tobacco consumers
