Changes in Teenage Attitude and Smoking Behaviour After the Implementation of the Smoke Free Law in Romania

Abstract

The new smoke free law (no. 15/2016) which bans smoking in all enclosed public spaces was accepted by the Romanian parliament in March 2016. We hypothesized that teenagers’ smoking prevalence can be reduced with appropriate sociopolitical constraints. The aim of our research was to assess the teenagers’ awareness of the law, and the changes occurred in their attitude and smoking behaviour between 2014 and 2016. Our cross-sectional study used self-administered questionnaires, completed by 7th grade students. The randomly stratified sample involved students from 21 localities, 21 schools, 55 classes from three Transylvanian counties. The results showed that those who were considered to be tobacco consumers smoked significantly less cigarettes after the implementation of the new law than before (an average of 3.51 sticks to 5.72 sticks, p<0,001). Compared to 2014, in 2016 the smoking trends have changed, the usage of classical tobacco became less frequent, the electronic cigarette, the hookah, the homemade cigarette and cigar or the pipe have gained more popularity. The perception of the new law is positive, still highly influenced by smoking habits, since non-smokers have a more favourable attitude in this direction than the tobacco consumers
