    The CORSAGE Programme: Continuous Orbital Remote Sensing of Archipelagic Geochemical Effects

    Current and pending oceanographic remote sensing technology allows the conceptualization of a programme designed to investigate ocean island interactions that could induce short-term nearshore fluxes of particulate organic carbon and biogenic calcium carbonate from pelagic island archipelagoes. These events will influence the geochemistry of adjacent waters, particularly the marine carbon system. Justification and design are provided for a study that would combine oceanographic satellite remote sensing (visible and infrared radiometry, altimetry and scatterometry) with shore-based facilities. A programme incorporating the methodology outlined here would seek to identify the mechanisms that cause such events, assess their geochemical significance, and provide both analytical and predictive capabilities for observations on greater temporal and spatial scales

    MSW mediated neutrino decay and the solar neutrino problem

    We investigate the solar neutrino problem assuming simultaneous presence of MSW transitions in the sun and neutrino decay on the way from sun to earth. We do a global χ2\chi^2-analysis of the data on total rates in Cl, Ga and Superkamiokande (SK) experiments and the SK day-night spectrum data and determine the changes in the allowed region in the \dm - \tan^2\theta plane in presence of decay.     Role of lepton flavor violating (LFV) muon decay in Seesaw model and LSND

    The aim of the work is to study LFV in a newly proposed Seesaw model of neutrino mass and to see whether it could explain LSND excess. The motivation of this Seesaw model was that there was no new physics beyond the TeV scale. By studying \mu \to 3e in this model, it is shown that the upper bound on the branching ratio requires Higgs mass m_{h} of a new scalar doublet with lepton number L=-1 needed in the model has to be about 9 TeV. The predicted branching ratio for \mu \to e\nu_{l}\bar{\nu}_{l} is too small to explain the LSND. PACS: 11.30.Hv, 14.60.PqComment: 05 pages, three figures, the version to appear in PR

    Organic nanowires and chiral patterns of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) grown by vacuum vapor deposition

    Organic nanowires and quasi-two-dimensional chiral patterns of tetracyanoquinodimethane have been successfully generated by vacuum thermal evaporation. The nanowires and patterns were characterized by using atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The influence of electric charged clusters, deposition rate, and substrate temperature were experimentally investigated. Contrary to previous reports, charged clusters are found to be unnecessary to the chiral pattern formation. It was shown that the nanowire and pattern formation should be mainly dominated by its special crystallization properties, though the effect of the growth conditions cannot be neglected.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, original draf

    Angular Dependences of Third Harmonic Generation from Microdroplets

    We present experimental and theoretical results for the angular dependence of third harmonic generation (THG) of water droplets in the micrometer range (size parameter 62<ka<24862<ka<248). The THG signal in pp- and ss-polarization obtained with ultrashort laser pulses is compared with a recently developed nonlinear extension of classical Mie theory including multipoles of order l≀250l\leq250. Both theory and experiment yield over a wide range of size parameters remarkably stable intensity maxima close to the forward and backward direction at ``magic angles''.
