This paper examines the mediating effect of profitability on the relationship between managerial ownership and tax avoidance of listed companies in Nigeria. The study employed a correlational research design using data from the Nigeria Exchange Group (NGX) over the period of twelve years (2010-2021). Data was extracted from the annual report and accounts of the 121 out of 156 companies that were listed for the period. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) were used as techniques for data analysis while Monte Carlo model was used to determine the level of significance of the indirect effects and the hypotheses formulated were tested. The study’s findings demonstrate that managerial ownership affects tax avoidance behavior and that the relationship between managerial ownership and tax avoidance is mediated by the level of profitability. Based on these findings, the study recommended that shareholders need to pay closer attention to corporate tax matters to verify that the business has complied with its tax duties accurately and completely. Also, to reduce the level of principal-agent conflicts and enhance tax avoidance by monitoring management activities, listed companies in Nigeria should encourage managerial shareholding because some directors do not have share in sampled companies. Furthermore, the findings could be employed to inform policy makers on effective managerial shareholding on tax avoidance among listed companies in Nigeria

Professor Mohammed K. Farouk, Major Professor In 1979, the Florida State Board of Education approved the teaching of global education in the state of Florida. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that contributed to teachers\u27 global knowledge, global mindedness, and pedagogy in global education. The Hanvey model of teaching from a global perspective was the theoretical framework for the study. A total of 90 secondary teachers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools were randomly selected and placed in three groups: Globally Oriented Social Studies Program (GOSSE), Non-Globally Oriented Social Studies Program (non-GOSSE), and Teachers Who Teach Other Subjects (TWTOS). Seven teachers, two of whom team-taught a class, were selected for classroom observations and interviews. A mixed methods design that combined quantitative and qualitative data was used. ANOVA and Chi square techniques were used to determine whether the factors that contributed to teachers\u27 global knowledge and global mindedness differ among groups. Classroom observations and interviews were conducted to determine whether the instructional strategies differ among the seven selected teachers. The findings of the study show that teachers who were trained in teaching from a global perspective differed in their global knowledge and used more appropriate instructional strategies than teachers who were not trained in teaching global perspectives. There was no significant difference in the combined global knowledge of the non-GOSSE and TWTOS groups when compared with the GOSSE group. There was no significant difference in the combined global knowledge of the GOSSE and non- GOSSE groups when compared with the TWTOS group. There was no significant difference among the teachers in their global mindedness. Observation and interview data indicate that current events, role-playing, simulations, open-ended discussion, debates, and projects were the predominant instructional strategies used by globally trained teachers. Cable networks, Internet, magazines, and newspapers were found to be the dominant tools for teaching global education. This study concluded that teachers who were trained in globally oriented programs had more global knowledge than teachers who were not. It is recommended that teacher education programs should incorporate a global perspective in the preparation of social studies teachers, with particular attention to developing their global attitudes

Entrepreneurial Orientation and Entrepreneurial Intention among Youth Corp Members in North East Nigeria: The Role Of Perceive Access to Finance

    Get PDF
Entrepreneurial intention (EI) is one of the major contributing factors to the formation, growth and development of entrepreneurship. Nigeria is making all possible effort in encouraging youths for self reliance especially youths in the North east region where violence has erupted for many years and destroyed the flow of economic activities. The current study therefore examined the moderating role of perceived access to finance (PAF) in the relationship between entrepreneurship orientation (EO) and entrepreneurial intention (EI).We employed questionnaires adapted from past studies to collect data from a sample of 354 corps members residing in the North east Nigeria. The results of the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) showed a significant positive relationship between entrepreneurship orientation and entrepreneurial intention. Our results also revealed that perceived access to finance significantly moderates the relationship between entrepreneurship orientation and entrepreneurial intention. The study therefore recommended that government should ensure that youth corps members are given adequate entrepreneurial orientation and finance to improve their intention for entrepreneurship. Our review of past empirical studies on the relationship between entrepreneurship orientation and entrepreneurial intention showed inconsistencies. To fill this gap and add to the exiting body of knowledge, the current study integrated a third variable as a moderator of the relationship

In all education system, the performance of teachers is one of the fundamental factors determining school effectiveness and learning outcomes. It is becoming worrisome to note that the performance of these teachers specifically in Bauchi state has taken a negative shape. Hence, this study examined the effect of training on teachers’ performance and the role of organizational effective commitment. A survey research design was used and data were collected from 354 public secondary school teachers in Bauchi Metropolis by using using Newman et’al perceived training availability scale, Allen & Meyer’s organizational affective commitment scale and Koopman’s task performance scale. The study utilized hierarchical multiple regression analysis and the results indicated a significant positive effect of training on teachers performance. The results further revealed that organizational affective commitment has potential moderating effect on the relationship between training and teachers’ performance among public secondary schools in Bauchi Metropolis. The study base the findings, therefore recommended for institution of training program on a regular basis. Also effort should be made to stimulate teachers’ commitment to the various schools they work

    Get PDF
This study examined the moderating effects of managerial ownership on the relationship between free cash flow and the profitability of listed industrial goods companies in Nigeria. The study employed non-survey research design, using a sample size of eleven (11) companies from a total population of thirteen (13) listed industrial goods companies on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) with data extracted from the annual reports and accounts of the sampled companies for a period of eleven years from 2010 to 2020. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics to provide a summary for the variables and correlation analysis carried out using the Pearson correlation technique. The analyses were done using STATA software version 14. The study found out that free cash flow had a significant and positive effect on profitability. On the moderating effect of managerial ownership on the relationship between free cash flow and profitability, it was found out that R2 increased from 2.66% to 8.16% in the model when the managerial ownership was introduced and is also significantly positive. Thus, managerial ownership moderates the relationship between free cash flow and profitability. Thus, this study recommends that the managers of the sampled companies in Nigeria should use excess cash flow to generate profit rather than hold up money in anticipation of future opportunities for the ultimate betterment of the firm and shareholders. Investors should choose companies that have excess free cash flows as well as managerial ownership, which would have a positive impact on the performance of sampled companies in Nigeria. A Critical Review of the Challenges of Budgeting in New Agricultural Business Enterprises in Kano State

    Get PDF
Budgeting involves a systematic business analysis and projection of an enterprise’s activities in a manner that specific objectives to be achieved in a defined time frame subject to certain resources are clearly established.  Established businesses tend to ride on existing data and experiences to plan the future. This paper focuses on how new entrants in the agricultural business would overcome the peculiar handicaps of dearth of historical data to enjoy the rich benefits of effective budgeting. Thus, the paper explore the context of new agricultural business enterprises to determine how far their peculiarities impact on the companies’ budgeting processes. Guided by information from the review of relevant literature, the researchers analysed data from a survey of selected farm holdings in Kano; that is, those farmers that have been in business for not more than three years. The results show that farmers acknowledge the relevance of good budgeting for their business success, but they experience budgeting frustrations in the earlier years of operation, especially within the first three years, than in later years. When the business activities of these farmers are paired with budgetary information of more established firms, the researchers found that carefully selected market information of established competing firms can greatly enhance the budgeting success of new agribusinesses in Kano.
