    Indigenous knowledge management - multimedia capture of oral history (New lamps for old)

    The history or origins of a village has always been transmitted through oral storytelling by the older generations who have lived in that village for a long time. In order to collect and preserve this tacit knowledge, Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor (PPAS) the Selangor State Public Library, in collaboration with Discovery Research Consultant Management Sdn. Bhd and Unit Perancang Ekonomi Negeri Selangor (The Selangor Stae Ecomonic Unit) decided to collect oral histories of villages in Sabak Bernam, which is one of the districts in Selangor, a state in Peninsular Malaysia. With the realization that knowledge is a core resource, they captured and documented all the oral histories (tacit knowledge) into a book (explicit knowledge) called “KOLEKSI CERITA RAKYAT: DAERAH SABAK BERNAM”. Through the oral histories told to them by the older inhabitants, they managed to collect 53 stories of villages in Sabak Bernam. Though the PPAS initiatives were good, the book failed to catch the younger generation’s attention. Now in conjunction with the Faculty of Creative Multimedia, Multimedia University, they have taken one step further by converting the book into animation format

    Repertory Grid Technique: a pragmatic approach to evaluating user experience in visualisation navigation

    The aim of this study is to evaluate user experience of visualisation navigation by adopting a pragmatic approach. A pragmatic approach with the adoption of Repertory Grid Technique (RGT) reveals a different side of visualisation evaluation. Visualisation in past research has been studied through different theoretical lenses, discussed here under four headings: human cognition; technology interventions; data and information; and evaluation behaviours. From these four headings emerge objective and subjective user experience measurements. These insights have been used to demonstrate the implications of RGT and how it can generate valid data for analysing user experience. The findings elicited from 48 users demonstrate the contributions of the study specifically to evaluation approaches. The implications of RGT explored uncommon research paradigms in visualisation research, improvement in the elicitation method and extensions to the RGT, enhancing the research credibility. The outcomes derived from RGT were used as indicators to uncover user experience. These outcomes were: (1) the list of the hierarchical factors to evaluate user experience; (2) the potential implications for practice when designing visualisation navigation; and (3) the richness of the classification of visualisation navigation features generated by user experience. A comparison between the generated data and previous studies was used to demonstrate the impact on the research context. The main contributions of this research are fourfold. First, the research followed a pragmatic paradigm and adopted RGT, which is uncommon for visualisation research exploring users’ perceptions towards visualisation, and constitutes a methodological innovation. Second, it fills a gap in the theoretical basis of evaluating visualisation navigation based on user experience. It also articulates four lenses of past research: human cognition, technology interventions, data and information, and evaluation behaviours. Third, it determines the important elements of user experience towards visualisation. Fourth, the research bridges the gap between designers, users and academicians by exploring the visualisation phenomenon.<br/

    Assessment variability of annual daily maximum rainfall of Terengganu, Malaysia

    Recently, major cities in Terengganu have been affected by problems related to flooding incident. Meanwhile, extreme rainfall during northeast monsoon caused overflowing of Terengganu River and flooding, which cause a lot of destruction of house and property. The main objective of this study is to assess the variability of annual daily maximum rainfall. Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite-based rainfalls from public domain were used in this study. The daily satellite-based rainfall data for each major cities in Terengganu were retrieved using Geographical Information System (GIS) technique. Gumbel distribution functions were applied to estimate expected return period and probability of extreme rainfall event. For annual daily maximum, the maximum depth at Kemaman, Dungun, Marang, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu and Besut are 363.96mm 477.54mm, 332.45mm, 303.68mm, 347.85, 547.00mm and 398.44mm, respectively. For annual monthly maximum, the maximum depth at Kemaman, Dungun, Marang, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terngganu, Setiu and Besut are, 926.89mm, 826.65mm, 969.77mm, 982.86mm, 1005.00mm, 1079.45mm and 1216.51mm, respectively. Meanwhile, for annual maximum rainfall, the maximum depth at Kemaman, Dungun, Marang, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu and Besut are 3767.97mm, 4642.43mm, 7065.96mm, 6733.18mm, 6342.88mm, 4707.01mm and 4187.03mm. From Gumble distribution, estimate extreme daily rainfall, probability and return period for 25 years in Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu and Besut are 546.52mm, 556.13mm, 2666mm, 475.4mm, 496.27mm, 551.10mm and 551.10mm. Meanwhile, the return period for 50 years in Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu and Besut are 632.93mm, 623.27mm, 5187.00mm, 545.93mm, 571.61mm, 635.28mm and 635.28mm. Lastly, the return period for 100 years in Kemaman, Dungun, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Setiu and Besut are 179.33mm, 730.41mm, 10230.00mm, 616.46mm, 626.95mm, 719.45mm and 719.45mm.
