Abstract

Background

Intravesical retained surgical sponges are very rare and only a few cases have been removed by minimally invasive techniques.

Case presentation

We report a case of an intravesical gossypiboma in a 71-year-old man from western Nepal, who presented with urinary retention and persistent lower urinary tract symptoms one year after open cystolithotomy. He was diagnosed with an intravesical mass using ultrasonography. The retained surgical sponge was found during cystoscopy and removed through endoscopy.

Conclusion

Intravesical gossypibomas are rare and can mimic a bladder mass. This is one of the few reported cases of cystoscopic removal.</p

Patient Safety in the Cardiac Operating Room: Human Factors and Teamwork: A Scientific Study from the American Heart Association

The cardiac surgical operating room (OR) is a complex environment in which highly trained subspecialists interact with each other using sophisticated equipment to care for patients with severe cardiac disease and significant comorbidities. Thousands of patient lives have been saved or significantly improved with the advent of modern cardiac surgery. Indeed, both mortality and morbidity for coronary artery bypass surgery have decreased during the past decade. Nonetheless, the highly skilled and dedicated personnel in cardiac ORs are human and will make errors. Refined techniques, advanced technologies, and enhanced coordination of care have led to significant improvements in cardiac surgery outcomes

THE RESULT SHOWED THAT APPLICATION OF 160 kg N/HA significantly increased the grain yield ( 10.7 Q/HA) OF RAINFED MUSTARD OVER CONTROL (1.7 q/ha) AND ALL OTHER LEVELS OF NITROGEN ( 2.7, 4.7 , 6.7 AND 9.7 q/ha), RESPECTIVELY. THE UPTAKE OF NITROGEN WAS HIGH ( 2.2%) AT 160 kg N/ha BUT IT WAS AT PAR ( 2.02%) WITH THE NITROGEN DOSE OF 120 kg N/ha . THE ROOT PENETRATION WAS OBSERVED INCREASING WITH FERTILISERS REACHING A DEPTH OF 42cm AT HIGHEST DOSE OF NITROGEN, AND THE ROOT DENSITY WAS OBSERVED IN INCREASING ORDER WITH INCREASED DOSE OF NITROGEN.Not Availabl

THE PRESENT PAPER DEALS WITH THE EFFECT OF LAND DEVELOPMENT MEASURES ON PRODUCTIVITY OF THESE OTHERWISE WASTELANDS. IT BRINGS OUT THAT TO ACHIEVE ECONOMIC PROSPERITY IN THE YAMUNA RAVINES, TERRACING AND LEVELLING MUST BE CARRIED OUT ON SHALLOW TO MEDIUM RAVINES EVEN THOUGH IT MAY BE COST INTENSIVE PROGRAMME. BY GROWING SUITABLE CROPS INVOLVING OILSEEDS AND PULSES , THE ENTIRE COST MAY BE RECOVERED IN 1-2 YEARS.Not Availabl

THE STUDY REVEALED THAT TERRACING AND LEVELLING MOTIVATED FARMERS IN THE WATERSHED TO ADD ORGANIC MANURES, FERTILIZER AND PLANT PROTECTION MEASURES ETC, AND RESULTED IN HIGHER YIELD RANGING FROM 30 RO 112 % OF DIFFERENT CROPS.Not Availabl

An unusual cause of small bowel obstruction: Gossypiboma – case report

Abstract

Background

The term "gossypiboma" denotes a mass of cotton that is retained in the body following surgery. Gossypiboma is a medico-legal problem especially for surgeons. To the best of our knowledge, the patient presented herein is the second reported patient in whom the exact site of migration of a retained surgical textile material into the intestinal lumen could be demonstrated by preoperative imaging studies.

Case presentation

A 74-year-old woman presented with symptoms of small bowel obstruction due to incomplete intraluminal migration of a laparotomy towel 3 years after open cholecystectomy and umbilical hernia repair. Plain abdominal radiography did not show any sign of a radio-opaque marker in the abdomen. However, contrast enhanced abdominal computerized tomography revealed a round, well-defined soft-tissue mass with a dense, enhanced wall, containing an internal high-density area with air-bubbles in the mid-abdomen. A fistula between the abscess cavity containing the suspicious mass and gastrointestinal tract was identified by upper gastrointestinal series. The presence of a foreign body was considered. It was surgically removed with a partial small bowel resection followed by anastomosis.

Conclusions

Although gossypiboma is rarely seen in daily clinical practice, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute mechanical intestinal obstruction in patients who underwent laparotomy previously. The best approach in the prevention of this condition can be achieved by meticulous count of surgical materials in addition to thorough exploration of surgical site at the conclusion of operations and also by routine use of surgical textile materials impregnated with a radio-opaque marker.</p
