    The Anatomy of Library Users in the 21st Century

    This paper argued that skills have become a major determining factor in the accessibility and use of 21st century library. Everybody needs information whether skilled or not and as such, users profile should be considered along that line. The paper revealed that without ICT skills, it is not possible to make effective use of the library except a third party is involved. It was recommended that librarians must acquire ICT skills in order to satisfy their user. The library users also must undergo self-sponsored basic ICT training to acquire skills; the collections of the library must reflect the needs of the users. Use of advanced search technology was recommended for skilled library (ICT) users. Libraries should put adequate security measures in place to deny unauthorized users access to their collections

    Internet Services in Nigerian Private Universities: A Case Study

    This study investigated the accessibility and use of Internet services in Nigerian private university system. The survey method was used for the study and data were collected with questionnaire from 240 respondents. Data were analyzed using frequency count and percentage. the findings are that: majority of the staff and students do not have access to the Internet as a result of ineffectiveness of the institution\u27s Internet facility; cybercafés and personal laptops are their main Internet access points; Internet use is motivated by lack of materials in the library and the convenience of Internet use; staff and students use the Internet to gather materials to supplement course work, assignments, online examinations and distant education. The study recommended that: the library and the ICT laboratory should be provided with high speed Internet facilities, followed by networking of staff offices and lecture halls; contingency plan, security measures and user training should be put in place

    This paper explores the librarian-based factors that pose serious challenges to the delivery of library services in the 21st century. It is not just funding, but also the librarian that hinders the 21st century library. Factors include inflation of costs, embezzlement, bribery, misappropriation of funds, lack of relevant skills, fear, bias, dogmatism, and ageism. Librarians should develop themselves by seeking ICT training; take full advantage of training and development, and take advantage of the knowledge and education offered by conferences and workshops; ICT skill should be accorded priority in recruiting and retaining librarians; the LIS curriculum should include 21st century advancements, to avoid churning out fresh librarians with obsolete skills; Librarians should handle library finances conscientiously without defrauding the library

    NEED FOR ADOPTION OF KOHA INTEGRATED LIBRARY MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE IN NIGERIAN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES

    The main objective of this paper is to justify the need for Nigerian libraries which have not automated their functions to adopt of Koha ILMS as their automation software. The paper therefore examined the need for automation, the reasons for the choice of Koha ILMS and potential benefits accruable to the libraries, and functions that Koha can facilitate their perform in their libraries. The paper identified the need for automation to include need to handle information explosion, for effective management of library operations, to improve operation speed, resource sharing etc; the choice of Koha was informed by its features and benefits which include Koha in Nigeria libraries could be linked to its powerful features which include MARC 21 compatibility, Z39.50 search, Customizability to suit individual library needs and taste, sustainability etc; the paper identified the library operations facilitated by Koha to include acquisition, cataloguing, circulation, patron management, OPAC etc. the paper however highlighted data migration and lack of skilled manpower as limitations to Koha adoption. The paper therefore recommends that a committee should be constituted to oversee the automation project. As part of feasibility study, the committee should visit libraries where Koha is in use for on the spot assessment. Management should make the requirements for installation available, while staff training should be conducted in-house. in addition, libraries in Nigeria utilizing Koha should come together to form a network of libraries to facilitate resource sharing

    This paper examined the issues in citing internet resources using APA style. It was discovered that without citation, there may be no other means of obtaining clarification or additional information about a write up. It was therefore recommended that sources used as evidence in writing a piece of information should be clearly cited and referenced accordingly; only works cited in-text should be included in the reference list; there is also the urgent need for writers and information users on the internet to acquire the basic skills necessary for citing internet resources in line with acceptable styles or formats

    The Role and Responsibility of the Library in Consolidating Research in Nigerian Private Universities: A Case Study of Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State

    This paper examines the role of Nigerian private university libraries in supporting research. The case study approach was used for the study and a questionnaire was used to collect data from 120 respondents. Data were analyzed using percentage and graphical analysis. The major findings are that: research impacts positively on community development, research output impacts the recognition and ranking of universities, the library impacts positively on research, and library ICT impacts on the quality of research. It was recommended that the university budgeting authority allocate at least 10 percent of its annual budget to the library as recommended by the National Universities Commission. A state-of-emergency should be declared on library Internet connectivity and computerization projects. Researchers should put the library to effective use, and concentrate their research on topics that can be applied to solve problems. University authorities should make research grants available to researchers carrying out investigation in the university\u27s areas of interest
