    Transition from Knudsen to molecular diffusion in activity of absorbing irregular interfaces

    We investigate through molecular dynamics the transition from Knudsen to molecular diffusion transport towards 2d absorbing interfaces with irregular geometry. Our results indicate that the length of the active zone decreases continuously with density from the Knudsen to the molecular diffusion regime. In the limit where molecular diffusion dominates, we find that this length approaches a constant value of the order of the system size, in agreement with theoretical predictions for Laplacian transport in irregular geometries. Finally, we show that all these features can be qualitatively described in terms of a simple random-walk model of the diffusion process.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Elliptic Flow and Dissipation in Heavy-Ion Collisions at E_{lab} = (1--160)A GeV

    Elliptic flow in heavy-ion collisions at incident energies ElabE_{lab}\simeq (1--160)A GeV is analyzed within the model of 3-fluid dynamics (3FD). We show that a simple correction factor, taking into account dissipative affects, allows us to adjust the 3FD results to experimental data. This single-parameter fit results in a good reproduction of the elliptic flow as a function of the incident energy, centrality of the collision and rapidity. The experimental scaling of pion eccentricity-scaled elliptic flow versus charged-hadron-multiplicity density per unit transverse area turns out to be also reasonably described. Proceeding from values of the Knudsen number, deduced from this fit, we estimate the upper limit the shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio as η/s12\eta/s \sim 1-2 at the SPS incident energies. This value is of the order of minimal η/s\eta/s observed in water and liquid nitrogen.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, version accepted by Phys. Rev.

    Teleparallel origin of the Fierz picture for spin-2 particle

    A new approach to the description of spin-2 particle in flat and curved spacetime is developed on the basis of the teleparallel gravity theory. We show that such an approach is in fact a true and natural framework for the Fierz representation proposed recently by Novello and Neves. More specifically, we demonstrate how the teleparallel theory fixes uniquely the structure of the Fierz tensor, discover the transparent origin of the gauge symmetry of the spin 2 model, and derive the linearized Einstein operator from the fundamental identity of the teleparallel gravity. In order to cope with the consistency problem on the curved spacetime, similarly to the usual Riemannian approach, one needs to include the non-minimal (torsion dependent) coupling terms.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex4, no figures.     Efeito de subdoses de oxyfluorfen simulando deriva sobre a cultura do feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

    O presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar os efeitos e quantificar os prejuizos causados por subdoses de oxyfluorfen (2-cloro-1-(3-etoxi-4-nitrofenoxi)-4-(trifluorometil) benzeno), simulando deriva em diferentes estadios de desenvolvimento da cultura do feijao (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), correlacionando-os com as doses aplicadas. Foram conduzidos dois ensaios de campo (seca e outono-inverno de 1995) no CNPMS/EMBRAPA, Sete Lagoas, MG, utilizando-se a cultivar Carioca, aplicando-se subdoses da dose recomendada de oxyfluorfen para eucalipto, em diferentes etapas de desenvolvimento da cultura do feijoeiro e avaliando-se as caracteristicas agronomicas da cultura. Pelos resultados obtidos, pode-se concluir que em todas as situacoes em que houve prejuízo em funcao da deriva simulada, o efeito foi proporcional ao aumento da dose do produto; o feijao foi mais sensivel a deriva simulada do produto no estadio inicial de desenvolvimento, ocorrendo drastica reducao do estande e rendimento; na fase reprodutiva o estadio R7 (formacao de vagens) mostrou-se mais sensivel que R8 (enchimento de vagens)

    Systematic review of the role of high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) in treating malignant lesions of the hepatobiliary system

    BACKGROUND: High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is an emerging non-invasive, targeted treatment of malignancy. The aim of this review was to assess the efficacy, safety and optimal technical parameters of HIFU to treat malignant lesions of the hepatobiliary system. METHODS: A systematic search of the English literature was performed until March 2020, interrogating Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. The following key-words were input in various combinations: 'HIFU', 'High intensity focussed ultrasound', 'Hepatobiliary', 'Liver', 'Cancer' and 'Carcinoma'. Extracted content included: Application type, Exposure parameters, Patient demographics, and Treatment outcomes. RESULTS: Twenty-four articles reported on the clinical use of HIFU in 940 individuals to treat malignant liver lesions. Twenty-one studies detailed the use of HIFU to treat hepatocellular carcinoma only. Mean tumour size was 5.1 cm. Across all studies, HIFU resulted in complete tumour ablation in 55% of patients. Data on technical parameters and the procedural structure was very heterogeneous. Ten studies (n = 537 (57%) patients) described the use of HIFU alongside other modalities including TACE, RFA and PEI; 66% of which resulted in complete tumour ablation. Most common complications were skin burns (15%), local pain (5%) and fever (2%). CONCLUSION: HIFU has demonstrated benefit as a treatment modality for malignant lesions of the hepatobiliary system. Combining HIFU with other ablative therapies, particularly TACE, increases the efficacy without increasing complications. Future human clinical studies are required to determine the optimal treatment parameters, better define outcomes and explore the risks and benefits of combination therapies
