    Normative analysis of cognition-enhancing drugs frequently weighs the liberty interests of drug users against egalitarian commitments to a level playing field. Yet those who would refuse to engage in neuroenhancement may well find their liberty to do so limited in a society where such drugs are widespread. To the extent that unvarnished emotional responses are world-disclosive, neurocosmetic practices also threaten to provide a form of faulty data to their users. This essay examines underappreciated liberty-based and epistemic rationales for regulating cognition-enhancing drugs

    Higgs mediated Double Flavor Violating top decays in Effective Theories

    The possibility of detecting double flavor violating top quark transitions at future colliders is explored in a model-independent manner using the effective Lagrangian approach through the tuiτμt \to u_i\tau \mu (ui=u,cu_i=u,c) decays. A Yukawa sector that contemplates SUL(2)×UY(1)SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1) invariants of up to dimension six is proposed and used to derive the most general flavor violating and CP violating qiqjHq_iq_jH and liljHl_il_jH vertices of renormalizable type. Low-energy data, on high precision measurements, and experimental limits are used to constraint the tuiHtu_iH and HτμH\tau \mu vertices and then used to predict the branching ratios for the tuiτμt \to u_i\tau \mu decays. It is found that this branching ratios may be of the order of 104105 10^{-4}-10^{-5}, for a relative light Higgs boson with mass lower than 2mW2m_W, which could be more important than those typical values found in theories beyond the standard model for the rare top quark decays tuiViVjt\to u_iV_iV_j (Vi=W,Z,γ,gV_i=W,Z,\gamma, g) or tuil+lt\to u_il^+l^-. %% LHC experiments, by using a total integrated luminosity of 3000fb1\rm 3000 fb^{-1} of data, will be able to rule out, at 95% C.L., DFV top quark decays up to a Higgs mass of 155 GeV/c2c^2 or discover such a process up to a Higgs mass of 147 GeV/c2c^2.Comment: 24 pages, 11 figure

    Primordial Entropy Production and Lambda-driven Inflation from Quantum Einstein Gravity

    We review recent work on renormalization group (RG) improved cosmologies based upon a RG trajectory of Quantum Einstein Gravity (QEG) with realistic parameter values. In particular we argue that QEG effects can account for the entire entropy of the present Universe in the massless sector and give rise to a phase of inflationary expansion.     Network synchronization: Optimal and Pessimal Scale-Free Topologies

    By employing a recently introduced optimization algorithm we explicitely design optimally synchronizable (unweighted) networks for any given scale-free degree distribution. We explore how the optimization process affects degree-degree correlations and observe a generic tendency towards disassortativity. Still, we show that there is not a one-to-one correspondence between synchronizability and disassortativity. On the other hand, we study the nature of optimally un-synchronizable networks, that is, networks whose topology minimizes the range of stability of the synchronous state. The resulting ``pessimal networks'' turn out to have a highly assortative string-like structure. We also derive a rigorous lower bound for the Laplacian eigenvalue ratio controlling synchronizability, which helps understanding the impact of degree correlations on network synchronizability.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figs, submitted to J.     One-loop Beta Functions for the Orientable Non-commutative Gross-Neveu Model

    We compute at the one-loop order the beta-functions for a renormalisable non-commutative analog of the Gross Neveu model defined on the Moyal plane. The calculation is performed within the so called x-space formalism. We find that this non-commutative field theory exhibits asymptotic freedom for any number of colors. The beta-function for the non-commutative counterpart of the Thirring model is found to be non vanishing.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure

    Langevin dynamics of the Lebowitz-Percus model

    We revisit the hard-spheres lattice gas model in the spherical approximation proposed by Lebowitz and Percus (J. L. Lebowitz, J. K. Percus, Phys. Rev.{\ 144} (1966) 251). Although no disorder is present in the model, we find that the short-range dynamical restrictions in the model induce glassy behavior. We examine the off-equilibrium Langevin dynamics of this model and study the relaxation of the density as well as the correlation, response and overlap two-time functions. We find that the relaxation proceeds in two steps as well as absence of anomaly in the response function. By studying the violation of the fluctuation-dissipation ratio we conclude that the glassy scenario of this model corresponds to the dynamics of domain growth in phase ordering kinetics.Comment: 21 pages, RevTeX, 14 PS figure

    Quantum Revivals in a Periodically Driven Gravitational Cavity

    Quantum revivals are investigated for the dynamics of an atom in a driven gravitational cavity. It is demonstrated that the external driving field influences the revival time significantly. Analytical expressions are presented which are based on second order perturbation theory and semiclassical secular theory. These analytical results explain the dependence of the revival time on the characteristic parameters of the problem quantitatively in a simple way. They are in excellent agreement with numerical results

    We show that singularities necessarily occur when a boundary of causality violating set exists in a space-time under the physically suitable assumptions except the global causality condition in the Hawking-Penrose singularity theorems.     A covariant approach to general field space metric in multi-field inflation

    We present a covariant formalism for general multi-field system which enables us to obtain higher order action of cosmological perturbations easily and systematically. The effects of the field space geometry, described by the Riemann curvature tensor of the field space, are naturally incorporated.
