Many chemists have tried to mimic what Nature does best, preparing various amphiphiles and block copolymers. However even after synthesis, additional post-modification steps to induce self-assembly are inevitable. We report a simple, direct one-pot route for the preparation of supramolecules from simple polyacetylene (PA) diblock copolymers synthesized by mild ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclooctatetraene. This direct in situ method is advantageous over the conventional self-assembly process because it does not require any tedious post-synthetic treatments. This approach provides intriguing supramolecules with unique nanostructure resembling a caterpillar. These nanocaterpillars have been characterized in detail by atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic laser light scattering (DLS), and other methods.
