This study explores the relationship between capitalist development and democratization based on a critical analysis of the political economic perspective. For a large sample of countries, the new statist's approach, adopting Weberian tradition, argued that capitalist development is associated with democracy because it transforms the class structure, strengthening the working and middle classes and weakening the upper class, and concluded that it was that the contradictions of development that advanced the cause of democracy. However, when more specific characteristics of development process are considered, some significant effects are found: to what extent in what ways, and on whose part, are the consolidation of democracy societally determined. In particular support is found for the hypothesis that the causal relationship between two variables can be converted.Although the historical cure is not taken indiscriminately, the comparative historical investigations can then move to another level of analysis, from heuristically prior static to the dynamics of the emergence, maintenance, and alteration of the internal features in the process of democratization unless escaped from the combined strategy between the quantitative and qualitative methods. In a diagnosis of inequality and social justice, this study suggests that when accorded analytical priority, comparative historical methods can serve as a beachhead from which to reconnoiter and then move into the societal dynamic power configurations-state apparatus and its interrelations with civil society and the impact of transnational power relations. It ends by exploring the implications of current findings for the future of democracy

This paper attempts to specify the role of the state in a very developing country, debunking an illusion of the developmental state. Much of the argument is concerned with an in-depth exploration of the effective state intervention, with reference to a modified institutional and historical perspective. The research examines the structural relationships between explanatory variables such as structural characteristics state autonomy, institutional level, and policy networks, on the one hand, and the role of state, on the other hand. The analysis weighs the influence of these variables, and fall broadly within the realm of contrapuntal theory construction, reaching for some contingent direction toward social partnership. The result suggests that the state can be studied as dynamic processes and as a dependent subject as well as an independent actor, not simply an agency of other interest groups. The effects of economic and cultural factors, state autonomy, institutional level, and policy network are crucial in accounting for the developmental pathway influencing quality of state intervention, which is critical to the formation of sustainability

This paper addresses a special issue on the structure of social stratification and the dynamics of conflicts in Korea. Most previous studies of conflict typically devote little space to a clear vision for capturing future trends as well as effective solutions, often using cross national tests. Against this backdrop, this case study takes an explicit historical and contextual approach, focusing on the objective and subjective dimensions of stratification. It diagnoses changes in the distribution of socioeconomic resources such as income, wealth, class position and mobility. These factors are then related to levels and trends of inequality, and advances our understanding of conflict dynamics by its ability to account for group heterogeneity within the country. The investigation on the nature of polarization with conflicts indicates the importance of the effective strategies for fair opportunities, redistribution effects, and the impact of policy designs. The strategy needs a new alternative formula with incentives and capabilities shaping the process of conflict resolutions and cultural practices

This paper attempts to specify the framework for consensus building in a developing country, dealing with a modified public choice theory. Much of the theoretical diagnosis is related to the rationales of conflict and consensus linkages and the role of the state in high quality agreements, which are beyond the alternative dispute resolution approach. This research examines the nature and conditions of conflict, the players in conflict, the effect and process of consensus, and possible strategies for consensus building. The analysis weighs the influence of the state, and falls broadly within the realm of complex adaptive systems, reaching in a contingent direction toward the public good. It is proposed here that a consensus building framework be evaluated by complexity science and communication rationality as well as community principles. It suggests developmental strategies and policy implications, which is critical to the formation and evaluation of social consensus.
