This study was designed to identify the relation between the perceived social support and the mental health of adolescents in an urban area. The subjects for this study were 297 high school students attending a highschool in S city : the number of first year and of second year included was 150 and 147 students respectively. The data were collected during the period from April 19, 1991 to April 24, 1991.
For measuring the perceived social support the Generally Perceived Social Support Scale developed by Dr.Ji Won Park and partially codified for this study by the author and the Simplified Mental Diagnostic Test developed by professor Hun Ku Lee was used for the measurement of the level of mental health.
The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson Correlation Coefficients, t-test, ANOVA, and Partial Correlation Coefficients. Thehe SPSS program was used.
The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
1. The mean score for the perceived Social Support Scale was 142.93, which was a little higher than other age-groups for which this tool has been used.
2. The mean score for the level of mental health was 63.26, which was similar to high school students in the Seoul area.
3. The relationship between the perceived social support and the level of mental health revealed a significant correlation(r=0.48, p<0.001). Therefore the hypothesis "the higher the level of perceived social support, the higher the level of mental health" was accepted.
4. The relationships between four types of the indirect-ly perceived social support and the level of mental health were analyzed. The emotional support(r=0.21. p<0.01), the informational support(r=0.18, p<0.01), and the appraisal support(r=0.25, P7O.01) were significantly related to the level of mental health. But the relationship between the material support and the level of mental health revealed statistically no significant correlation.
5. The results from the tests for the degree of social support and the level of mental health according to the subjects demographic variables, showed that there were significant differences with school-year, number in family and whether the student participated in extracurricular group activities or not.
6. The relationship between the perceived social support and the level of mental health still revealed a significant correlation despite controlling extraneous variables which showed that significant differences in the tests for the degree of the social support and the level of mental health according to the subjects' demographic variables.
In conclusion, this study showed that social support is an important factor can improve the mental health of adolescents.
Further multidimensional study is needed on how to improve the level of mental health in adolescents through the social support.restrictio

APM-1 (also called Zbtb7c) is a BTB/POZ-domain class, proto-oncogenic transcription factor which shows the highest sequence homology with FBI-1. FBI-1, newly identified proto-oncogene was shown to be expressed, induced during preadipocyte differentiation by promoting growth arrest and terminal differentiation. SREBP-1 is major transcription regulator of adipocyte differentiation and the many genes involved in cholesterol and fatty acid biosynthesis. We investigated whether APM-1 is modulating transcription controlled by SREBPs. APM-1 potently affected transcription activation by SREBP-1 on the artificial pGL2-6x(SRE)-Luc promoter in 293A cells. We found that APM-1 and SREBP-1 interact directly in vivo by co-immunoprecipitation and GST fusion protein pull-down assay. The zinc finger of APM-1 interacts directly with the bZIP DNA binding domain of SREBP-1. EMSA showed that the binding affinity of SREBP-1 to SRE and SRE/E-box is decreased by APM-1. However the interaction between APM-1 and SREBP-1 synergistically activate transcription of FASN gene by promoting GC-box binding of Sp1. We also found that Fatty Acid Synthase promoter, one of the transcriptional target genes of SREBP-1 and central enzyme in lipogenesis, was synergistically activated by APM-1 and SREBP-1. APM-1 is expressed during the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes into adipocytes. Thus, we expected that APM-1 may be one of the important transcription regulators of SREBP-1 responsive genes in cancer and adipose tissue.ope

Natural Antibiotics: Antimicrobial Peptides
Antimicrobial peptides are natural antibiotics evolved by many plants, invertebrate, and vertebrate to defend against the microbial infection. Antimicrobial peptides show a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity with little opportunity for the development of resistance since they target microbial membranes that distinguish microbes from eukaryotic cells. The oral cavity is constantly exposed to microbial challenges and antimicrobial peptides play an important role in maintaining the oral health. With the increase of resistant micro-organisms to conventional antibiotics, antimicrobial peptides are attracting interests as novel antibiotics. In this review, the characteristics of antimicrobial peptides including the classification, mechanism of action, resistance, and expression in the oral cavity have been discussed in the prospect of application to oral diseases
