[์˜๋ฌธ] Tooth movement must be controlled by applying the predictable force system to the dentition for optimal orthodontic treatment. Precise understanding of the force system produced from the various orthodontic appliances is necessary. The optimal design of springs incorporated into the appliance can minimize the undesirable tooth movement and achieve more effective tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the stress in the periodontal tissue at the initial phase during root movement using various types of root springs by finite element method. The three-dimensional finite element model from adult was constructed and analyzed. The results were as follows: 1. In case of ฮฑ side activation alone, moment was given only to slot and little moment to ฮฒ side, If the activation is given below 20ยฐ, linear proportional relations were demonstrated, but for above 20ยฐ, non-linear elastic behavior was observed. 2. In case of only ฮฒ side activation, moment was generated on slot as well as tube, and so moment must be given to ฮฑ side additionally. As for materials, firstly, in Stainless steel wire, from above 5ยฐ, non-linear behavior became obvious, Secondly, in TMA wire, so from above 15ยฐ. Therefore, to predict the force, accurately, evenly individual cases should be summed up accumulationally. 3. In the activation of both ฮฑside and ฮฒ side, both cases could be summed, and there by for direction of activation, activation force increased, however, for the counter directional cases, the force decreased as a result. 4. To predict the movement of teeth, as a result of 3-dimensional interpretation of stress and displacement, the prediction was possible by the use of the distribution of tensional principal stress. Displacement amount of the posterior segment was 10 times less than that of anterior segment, but the stress affected to the teeth was so low to 100 times less extent that there was little displacement. 5. The magnitude of maximum principal stress was generally proportionate to that of the moment generated by the wire. In comparison with anterior segment, molars haying larger sectional surface area was not affected by vortical displacement and moment was generated to a lesser degree as well. [์˜๋ฌธ] Over recent 20 years, with socioeconomic development and change of recognition of the population, more people are concerned about their health and appearance. To obtain the change of frequency of malocclusion and the demand for orthodontic treatment, with this trend,2460freshmen and students of Yonsei Univ. in 1991, aged from 18 to 21 were examined excluding 187 students who have history of orthodontic treatment, 86 students who are undergoing treatment, 39 students who have too much missing teeth to classify. After analize the frequency of malocclusion and the demand for orthodontic treatment, following results was obtained. 1. Sex ratio in the prevalence of malocclusion was 91.7%/90.8%, male to female, so there was no sex predilection. 2. With regard to Ang1e's Classification, each percentage of Classโ… , Classโ…ก div.1, Classโ…ก div. 2 and Class โ…ข was 61.6%, 11.3%, 1.9% and 16.7%. 3. Of Class 1 malocclusion, percentage of crowding was 53.2, this occupied the largest part of single findings and prevalent findings in combinations were also crowding - crossbite and crowding - Protrusion. 4. Of Class I malocclusion, over the portion of 95%, Bialveolar Protrusion have arised alone. 5.
