Gender-specific changes in quality of life following cardiovascular disease: a prospective study

    Get PDF
Gender-specific changes in Quality of Life (QoL) following cardiovascular disease (CVD) were studied in 208 patients to determine whether gender-related differences in postmorbid QoL result from differences in disease severity, premorbid QoL, or different CVD-related recovery. Premorbid data were available from a community-based survey. Follow-ups were done at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months after diagnosis. Results showed that females had worse QoL at all three postmorbid assessments compared to males. However, multivariate analyses adjusting for premorbid gender differences and disease severity showed no significant gender-related differences for physical and psychologic, functioning. Therefore, gender differences in QoL following CVD mainly result from premorbid differences in QoL, age, comorbidity, and disease severity at the time of diagnosis, and do not appear to be the consequence of gender-specific recovery. However, in clinical practice it is important to acknowledge the poorer QoL of females following CVD. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science. All rights reserve

Ibopamine in heart failure. Efficacy and safety in clinical and experimental studies.

The aim of this thesis was to assess t e role of ibopamine, in the treatment of patients with heart failure. Ibopamine is an orally active dopamine agonist which has beneficial hemodynamic and neurohumoral effects. In the 10 Appendices both clinical and experimental studies are reported that were designed to examine the efficacy and safety of ibopamine. The clinical studies, which constitute Appendices 1-7, were conducted in patients with mild, moderate and severe heart failure. In these studies, we evaluated the influence of ibopamine on hemodynamics (Appendices 3,4,6), renal function (Appendices 5,6), neurohumoral parameters (Appendices 1,2,3), arrhythmias and electrophysiology (Appendices 1,3), exercise tolerance (Appendices 1,2), signs and symptoms of heart failure and side-effects (Appendices 1,5,7). ... How context creates motivation: The effects of social context in a situation of job insecurity - a case study

    Get PDF
This research project provides insights in how knowledge workers make sense of their context of job insecurity in terms of motivation and aims to develop a theoretical understanding on motivation from a more conceptual point of view. There are several universally acknowledged motivation theories that claim to explain what motivates people. According to these theories, the job-threatening situation of our research should result in a lasting decrease in motivation. However, our findings suggest otherwise. Job insecurity does not necessarily lead to a lasting decrease in motivation, as the meaning making process of knowledge workers is determined interactively. The interactive aspects culture, norms, morals and identity influence what motivates knowledge workers. From the findings of this research that highlight the complexity of the meaning making process of knowledge workers, we can conclude that there is no magic formula that generates motivation. This research contributes to the motivation literature by applying the ‘motivation triangle theory’ to a real life context for the first time in order to understand motivation from a socio-cultural perspective. As such, we also contribute by testing its validity and usability, even though it cannot be generalized (yet)

Behavioural models and spatial planning : some methodological considerations and empirical tests

    Get PDF
This paper is concerned with the relevance of various geographic models of spatial shopping and residential choice behaviour to physical planning. It is argued that models relying on areal aggregation and overt spatial interaction patterns generally do not satisfy a number of methodological requirements considered extremely relevant in an applied context. In addition, it is argued that behavioural models provide a potentially more valuable approach for predicting consumer response to policy decisions with regard to spatial structure. Empirical evidence substantiating the claim that consumer evaluations bear some systematic relationship with objective attributes of spatial alternatives and overt choice behaviour is provided in the context of spatial shopping behaviour and residential choice behaviour
