    A generic tool to generate a lexicon for NLP from Lexicon-Grammar tables

    Lexicon-Grammar tables constitute a large-coverage syntactic lexicon but they cannot be directly used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications because they sometimes rely on implicit information. In this paper, we introduce LGExtract, a generic tool for generating a syntactic lexicon for NLP from the Lexicon-Grammar tables. It is based on a global table that contains undefined information and on a unique extraction script including all operations to be performed for all tables. We also present an experiment that has been conducted to generate a new lexicon of French verbs and predicative nouns

    Extending the adverbial coverage of a NLP oriented resource for French

    This paper presents a work on extending the adverbial entries of LGLex: a NLP oriented syntactic resource for French. Adverbs were extracted from the Lexicon-Grammar tables of both simple adverbs ending in -ment '-ly' (Molinier and Levrier, 2000) and compound adverbs (Gross, 1986; 1990). This work relies on the exploitation of fine-grained linguistic information provided in existing resources. Various features are encoded in both LG tables and they haven't been exploited yet. They describe the relations of deleting, permuting, intensifying and paraphrasing that associate, on the one hand, the simple and compound adverbs and, on the other hand, different types of compound adverbs. First of all I’ll try to understand the biological and anthropological roots, that make a naturally-artificial (namely technical) being of a man. Then I’ll examine what kind of role and weight Portmann assignes to the technique, underlining risks and chances, closely linked to it, and showing the essentially expressive and self-expressive function of it. Finally I’ll specify the relationship between the development of technique in our society and the loss of the primary world: the aesthetic world of imagination

    Effects of different simplified milk recording methods on genetic evaluation with test-day animal model

    The aims of the present study were to compare estimated breeding values (EBV) for milk yield using different testing schemes with a test-day animal model and to evaluate the effect of different testing schemes on the ranking of top sheep. Alternative recording schemes that use less information than that currently obtained with a monthly test-day schedule were employed to estimate breeding values. A random regression animal mixed model that used a spline function of days in milk was fitted. EBVs obtained with alternative recording schemes showed different degrees of Spearman correlation with EBVs obtained using the monthly recording scheme. These correlations ranged from 0.77 to 0.92. A reduction in accuracy and intensity of selection could be anticipated if these alternative schemes are used; more research in this area is needed to reduce the costs of test-day recording

    In this paper, we summerize the work done on the resources of Modern Greek on the Lexicon-Grammar of verbs. We detail the definitional features of each table, and all changes made to the names of features to make them consistent. Through the development of the table of classes, including all the features, we have considered the conversion of tables in a syntactic lexicon: LGLex. The lexicon, in plain text format or XML, is generated by the LGExtract tool (Constant & Tolone, 2010).     Gelatin tannate for acute childhood gastroenteritis: a randomized, single-blind controlled trial

    Background Oral rehydration therapy is the recommended treatment for acute childhood gastroenteritis. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and safety of gelatin tannate plus oral rehydration compared with oral rehydration alone. Methods We conducted a multicenter, parallel, randomized, controlled, single-blind, prospective, open-label trial. A central randomization center used computer generated tables to allocate treatments. The study was performed in two medical centers in Italy. Sixty patients 3–72 months of age with acute gastroenteritis were recruited (median age 18 months; age range 3–66 months): 29 received an oral rehydration solution (ORS) and 31 an ORS plus gelatin tannate (ORS ? G). The primary outcome was the number of bowel movements 48 and 72 h after initiating treatment. Secondary outcomes were: duration of diarrhea, stool characteristics and adverse events. Results No patient was lost at follow-up. No significant difference in the number of bowel movements after 48 h was reported (2.7 ± 1.3 ORS ? G; 3.2 ± 0.8 ORS; p = 0.06), although the ORS ? G group showed a significant improvement in stool consistency (3.7 ± 1.0 vs. 4.3 ± 0.8; p = 0.005). At 72 h, a significant reduction in bowel movements was reported in the ORS ? G group compared with the ORS group (1.0 ± 1.4 vs. 2.0 ± 1.7; p = 0.01). Mean duration of diarrhea was significantly lower in the ORS ? G group than in the ORS only group (76.8 ± 19.2 vs. 108 ± 24.0 h; p.0001). No adverse events were reported. Conclusions Gelatin tannate added to oral rehydration in children with acute diarrhea was associated with a significant decrease in bowel movements at 72 h, with an early improvement in the stool consistency and shorter disease duration

    Adding frequencies to the LGLex lexicon with IRASUBCAT

    We present a method for enlarge a lexicon (with frequencies information), that is useful for parsing and others NLP applications. We show an example enlarging the verbal LGLex lexicon of French [8], using several corpora extracted from the evaluation campaign for French parsers Passage [5]. To do that, we use the results of the frmg parser [7] with IRASubcat, a tool that automatically acquires subcategorization frames from corpus in any language and that also allows to complete an existing lexicon. We obtain the frequencies of occurrence for each input and each subcategorization frame for 14,068 distinct lemmas.Sociedad Argentina de Informática e Investigación Operativ
