    A Mediation Framework for Mobile Web Service Provisioning

    Web Services and mobile data services are the newest trends in information systems engineering in wired and wireless domains, respectively. Web Services have a broad range of service distributions while mobile phones have large and expanding user base. To address the confluence of Web Services and pervasive mobile devices and communication environments, a basic mobile Web Service provider was developed for smart phones. The performance of this Mobile Host was also analyzed in detail. Further analysis of the Mobile Host to provide proper QoS and to check Mobile Host's feasibility in the P2P networks, identified the necessity of a mediation framework.     Modifying Compiler Parsing to Improve the Usability of Boa: A Domain-Specific Language and Infrastructure for Ultra-Large-Scale Software Repository Data Mining

    Today’s software development environment has migrated to online software repositories due to the need for a reliable collaborative space where developers can merge different parts of a complex solution. By using software repositories like GitHub or SourceForge, they can also access other publicly available projects from which they can gather valuable insight on the development process, software characteristics, etc. Unfortunately, a wealth of qualitative information is inaccessible due to the large scale nature of these repositories; only coarse-grained information can be found. The Boa Project offers fine-grained information searching functionality by allowing users to construct infrastructure queries using the Boa domain language. Previously, however, the Boa compiler technology was not able to parse incorrect code efficiently. Users were unable to get passed all the errors and exceptions due to the lack of information about what kinds of issues were interfering. By rewriting the Boa parser component using JavaCC, the compiler now has recovery and reporting functionality, allowing programmers to see specifics about what issues they are encountering and possible fixes. Additionally, the standalone component can be adapted to work within a mobile application for smartphones, which would allow users to write code and submit queries while on the move

    A Decade of Research in Fog computing: Relevance, Challenges, and Future Directions

    Recent developments in the Internet of Things (IoT) and real-time applications, have led to the unprecedented growth in the connected devices and their generated data. Traditionally, this sensor data is transferred and processed at the cloud, and the control signals are sent back to the relevant actuators, as part of the IoT applications. This cloud-centric IoT model, resulted in increased latencies and network load, and compromised privacy. To address these problems, Fog Computing was coined by Cisco in 2012, a decade ago, which utilizes proximal computational resources for processing the sensor data. Ever since its proposal, fog computing has attracted significant attention and the research fraternity focused at addressing different challenges such as fog frameworks, simulators, resource management, placement strategies, quality of service aspects, fog economics etc. However, after a decade of research, we still do not see large-scale deployments of public/private fog networks, which can be utilized in realizing interesting IoT applications. In the literature, we only see pilot case studies and small-scale testbeds, and utilization of simulators for demonstrating scale of the specified models addressing the respective technical challenges. There are several reasons for this, and most importantly, fog computing did not present a clear business case for the companies and participating individuals yet. This paper summarizes the technical, non-functional and economic challenges, which have been posing hurdles in adopting fog computing, by consolidating them across different clusters. The paper also summarizes the relevant academic and industrial contributions in addressing these challenges and provides future research directions in realizing real-time fog computing applications, also considering the emerging trends such as federated learning and quantum computing.Comment: Accepted for publication at Wiley Software: Practice and Experience journa

    Are plants with anti-cancer activity resistant to crown gall? : A test of hypothesis

    The Crown gall tumour assay (CGTA) is one of several bench top bioassays recommended for the rapid screening of plants with anti-cancer activity. The rationale for the use of the bioassay is that the tumorogenic mechanism initiated in plant tissues by _Agrobacterium tumefaciens_ is in many ways similar to that of animals. Several plant species with anti-cancer activity have already been discovered using this bioassay. However till date no explicit test of an association between anti-cancer activity of plants and their resistance to crown gall formation has been demonstrated. Demonstration of an association could have exploratory potential when searching for plants with anti-cancer activity. In this paper, we determined whether or not a statistically significant association between crown gall resistance and anti-cancer activity exists in plants found in existing published data sets. Our results indicate that plants with anti-cancer activity have a higher proportion of their species resistant to crown gall formation compared to a random selection of plants. We discuss the implications of our results especially when prospecting for newer sources of anti-cancer activity in plants
