Reactive Systems over Cospans
The theory of reactive systems, introduced by Leifer and Milner and previously extended by the authors, allows the derivation of well-behaved labelled transition systems (LTS) for semantic models with an underlying reduction semantics. The derivation procedure requires the presence of certain colimits (or, more usually and generally, bicolimits) which need to be constructed separately within each model. In this paper, we offer a general construction of such bicolimits in a class of bicategories of cospans. The construction sheds light on as well as extends Ehrig and Konigās rewriting via borrowed contexts and opens the way to a unified treatment of several applications
Deriving Bisimulation Congruences: A 2-Categorical Approach
We introduce G-relative-pushouts (GRPO) which are a 2-categorical generalisation of relative-pushouts (RPO). They are suitable for deriving labelled transition systems (LTS) for process calculi where terms are viewed modulo structural congruence. We develop their basic properties and show that bisimulation on the LTS derived via GRPOs is a congruence, provided that sufficiently many GRPOs exist. The theory is applied to a simple subset of CCS and the resulting LTS is compared to one derived using a procedure proposed by Sewell

A Congruence for Petri Nets
We introduce a way of viewing Petri nets as open systems. This is done by considering a bicategory of cospans over a category of p/t nets and embeddings. We derive a labelled transition system (LTS) semantics for such nets using GIPOs and characterise the resulting congruence. Technically, our results are similar to the recent work by Milner on applying the theory of bigraphs to Petri Nets. The two main differences are that we treat p/t nets instead of c/e nets and we deal directly with a category of nets instead of encoding them into bigraphs
Interacting Hopf Algebras
We introduce the theory IH of interacting Hopf algebras, parametrised over a
principal ideal domain R. The axioms of IH are derived using Lack's approach to
composing PROPs: they feature two Hopf algebra and two Frobenius algebra
structures on four different monoid-comonoid pairs. This construction is
instrumental in showing that IH is isomorphic to the PROP of linear relations
(i.e. subspaces) over the field of fractions of R
Causality in the Semantics of Esterel: Revisited
We re-examine the challenges concerning causality in the semantics of Esterel
and show that they pertain to the known issues in the semantics of Structured
Operational Semantics with negative premises. We show that the solutions
offered for the semantics of SOS also provide answers to the semantic
challenges of Esterel and that they satisfy the intuitive requirements set by
the language designers
Analysis of Boolean Equation Systems through Structure Graphs
We analyse the problem of solving Boolean equation systems through the use of
structure graphs. The latter are obtained through an elegant set of
Plotkin-style deduction rules. Our main contribution is that we show that
equation systems with bisimilar structure graphs have the same solution. We
show that our work conservatively extends earlier work, conducted by Keiren and
Willemse, in which dependency graphs were used to analyse a subclass of Boolean
equation systems, viz., equation systems in standard recursive form. We
illustrate our approach by a small example, demonstrating the effect of
simplifying an equation system through minimisation of its structure graph
Connector algebras for C/E and P/T nets interactions
A quite fourishing research thread in the recent literature on component based system is concerned with the algebraic properties of different classes of connectors. In a recent paper, an algebra of stateless connectors was presented that consists of five kinds of basic connectors, namely symmetry, synchronization, mutual exclusion, hiding and inaction, plus their duals and it was shown how they can be freely composed in series and in parallel to model sophisticated "glues". In this paper we explore the expressiveness of stateful connectors obtained by adding one-place buffers or unbounded buffers to the stateless connectors. The main results are: i) we show how different classes of connectors exactly correspond to suitable classes of Petri nets equipped with compositional interfaces, called nets with boundaries; ii) we show that the difference between strong and weak semantics in stateful connectors is reflected in the semantics of nets with boundaries by moving from the classic step semantics (strong case) to a novel banking semantics (weak case), where a step can be executed by taking some "debit" tokens to be given back during the same step; iii) we show that the corresponding bisimilarities are congruences (w.r.t. composition of connectors in series and in parallel); iv) we show that suitable monoidality laws, like those arising when representing stateful connectors in the tile model, can nicely capture concurrency aspects; and v) as a side result, we provide a basic algebra, with a finite set of symbols, out of which we can compose all P/T nets, fulfilling a long standing quest
