A PROPOSED MODEL FOR ADVOCACY SERVICES FOR MEXICAN UNDOCUMENTED ALIENS WITH MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS

    Get PDF
The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the studies that have focused on undocumented aliens from Mexico, to discuss barriers that inhibit their use of mental health services, and to outline ways in which social workers employed in mental health institutions can become actively involved in helping this group. Since 1900, immigration to the United States from Mexico has followed a pattern of continuing legal and illegal entry; legal alien families from Mexico are defined as those who have been legally admitted to the U.S., whereas undocumented families.are those residing in the U.S. who have entered illegally. Mexico has supplied more immigrants with United States working visas between 1957 and 1966 than any other country. However, an unknown number of Mexicans enter the country illegally; for example, the AFL-CIO estimates the total number of illegal aliens residing in the U.S. is over eight million

The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic stirred up a myriad of emotions as everyone faced the uncertainty of the virus. This series of poems reflects on those emotions, from the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020 to the present. How it started recalls the initial spread of the virus and the changes it inflicted. In Bored, we explore the myriad of ways that life at home was experienced. Fidget refers to a more personal experience of coping with the anxiety of the pandemic using a fidget cube. A common experience expressed by many has been a lack of mental clarity and memory, which is detailed in Lost years, lost mind. Finally, Endemic(ish) discusses the current state of searching for a new sense of normalcy.https://digitalcommons.csumb.edu/hcom434_spring2023/1013/thumbnail.jp

Big Talk and Little Action on Renewable Energy, 49 J. Marshall L. Rev. 571 (2015)

    Get PDF
The United States has been in pursuit of a conflicting objective—pursuing an “all of the above” energy policy while trying to reduce emissions that drive climate change. As the United States pursues climate mitigation objectives, renewable energy must be built out in every region of the country. This article explores the tension between renewable energy development and its visible conflicts with land and wildlife conservation and environmental protection goals. While it is certain that climate change will bring devastating harms to the planet, the adoption of an aggressive renewable energy build-out will also have environmental impacts. Managing these impacts is an important component of a sustainable energy strategy

In 1996, billing integrity generated a great deal of debate and litigation in the health care arena. Significantly, the federal government views a violation of the Anti-Kickback Act as a basis for a False Claims Act action. While federal courts are split on the issue, the author strongly contends that using the False Claims Act to do what the Anti-Kickback Act was intended to do is inappropriate, given Congress\u27 intention in enacting each legislation

The Simplicity of Connecting with our Children

Connecting with our children is something that many parents struggle with but often overthink. It is often through being purposeful and present that we create times to connect. To help parents and children find fun ways to connect, I wrote a book showing a mom and son doing everyday activities together. In addition to completing a reading of this book to local families in my community, I also created a brochure that provided a list of activities as well as some of the benefits of connecting with our children. At the completion of the reading event, we had a Q and A session which gave the children and adults an opportunity to share what kinds of things they like to do together and what they wish they could do more of

    Reviving the Environmental Justice Agenda

During his 2008 campaign, President Obama pledged that his administration would put an emphasis on environmental justice, outlining a strategy to address the unequal burden of pollution in low-income, minority and indigenous communities. Though many criticize some of the shortcomings, such as inadequate pursuit of civil rights remedies, the administration has followed through to supply some of the most critical components of solutions to the environmental justice challenge: leadership, capacity, collaboration-in-fact, and funding. This article will examine the reinvigorated Inter-Agency Working Group on Environmental Justice, the roadmaps prepared to address EJ, and significant rules and guidance enacted by the EPA furthering the EJ mission. The paradoxical relationship between overburdened communities and the industries that both nourish and poison them demands more vigilant attention to local conditions atypically addressed at the federal level. The administration’s actions illustrate the importance of the federal role in alleviating unequal environmental burdens
