    The paper deals with the significant social restructuring and radical ethnic cleansing in post-Second World War Czechoslovakia borderlands as evidenced by the art market, where massive state appropriations and transfers of furnishings from the mostly ex-German and ex-Hungarian nobility residences manifested themselves in huge wave of frenetic auction sales. The uniquely preserved archive file on the Karel Ditrich Exhibition and Auction House in Brno enables us to reconstruct these processes within the scope of the entire Moravian and Silesian territory. The documents reveal the contemporary ethnic, social, and economic disputes, leading in the end to significant class and social transfers, i. e., new trends in living culture and collecting.V članku je obravnavano pomembno družbeno prestrukturiranje in radikalno etnično čiščenje na češkoslovaškem obmejnem območju po drugi svetovni vojni na podlagi analize umetnostnega trga. Množično podržavljenje zasebne lastnine in prenosi opreme iz nekdanjih nemških in madžarskih plemiških rezidenc so rezultirali v velikem valu mrzličnih dražbenih prodaj. Izjemno dobro ohranjena arhivska dokumentacija o razstavni in dražbeni hiši Karla Ditricha v Brnu nam omogoča rekonstrukcijo teh procesov v okviru celotnega moravskega in šlezijskega ozemlja. Dokumentacija razkriva tedanje etnične, socialne in gospodarske spore, ki so nazadnje pripeljali do pomembnih razrednih in socialnih premikov oziroma novih trendov v zbirateljstvu in bivalni kulturi

    The efficacy of verbal assertiveness training on reducing risk of sexual assualt

    Sexual assault is a common problem faced by women. Research has suggested 1 in 4 women will experience a sexual assault at some point during their life (Casey & Nuris, 2006; Tjaden & Thoennes, 1998; Fisher, Cullen & Turner, 2000). College females are one of the highest risk groups for experiencing a sexual assault. Currently, self defense courses are offered on college campuses. Self defense courses have proven to reduce depression and anxiety as well as increase a participant’s self esteem (Brecklin & Ullman, 2005). The current study assessed the efficacy of a novel assertiveness training program on reducing sexual assault risk. The current study had 54 female, undergraduate participants who were designated to an experimental or wait-list control condition. Participants who were given the assertiveness training program were compared to those who were not. The current study found the assertiveness training program increased general assertiveness and increased positive communication in romantic relationships. This finding has important implications for the future of sexual assault prevention programming offered on college campuses

    A Proposed Theoretical Model of Literacy Learning Using Multisensory Structured Language Instruction (MSLI)

    Multisensory Structured Language Instruction has been used for decades by clinicians and practitioners as an intervention for teaching students with dyslexia. Multisensory Structured Language Instruction uses the integration of multiple senses (visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile) simultaneously to teach literacy. Although the anecdotal evidence for Multisensory Structured Language Instruction is strong, there is a lack of empirical evidence to support its effectiveness. In addition, Multisensory Structured Language Instruction includes the foundational skills recommended by the National Reading Panel (2000), but the use of multiple senses to teach these skills has not been thoroughly studied. This theoretical dissertation focused on one element of Multisensory Structured Language Instruction that has not been adequately explored in the literature. A vast amount of brain imaging research demonstrates how the brain reads and writes and how a brain with dyslexia works A vast amount of brain imaging research demonstrates how the brain reads and writes and how a brain with dyslexia works differently from a typically developing brain. However, this research has mainly focused on the visual and auditory elements of learning to read. The kinesthetic modality has not been explored with respect to language learning disorders. This theoretical dissertation specifically examines the kinesthetic modality and offers a hypothesis as to why incorporating this modality into intervention may help some students with dyslexia. A literature review in the areas of dyslexia, Multisensory Structured Language Instruction, executive functioning, phonological awareness, attention, and learning disabilities was used to construct a theoretical model to explain the use of the kinesthetic modality for dyslexia intervention. Results are twofold: that Multisensory Structured Language Instruction is effective in teaching students with dyslexia because its pedagogy is grounded in methods supported by learning theory; and that use of the kinesthetic modality is useful for students who exhibit specific deficits in rapid automatic naming, a processing deficit underlying many students’ reading difficulties. The use of the kinesthetic modality improves rapid naming via attention and uses the teacher as a surrogate central executive. An intervention model was also constructed to triage students who would benefit from this intervention. Students with a single deficit in phonological processing only are treated with linguistically based interventions, while students with double-deficits in both phonological processing and rapid naming benefit from the addition of the kinesthetic modality.
