    Fragmentation in Jets at NNLO

    Beam and jet functions in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory describe collinear initial- and final-state radiation (jets), and enter in factorization theorems for N-jet production, the Higgs pT spectrum, etc. We show that they may directly be calculated as phase-space integrals of QCD splitting functions. At NLO all computations are trivial, as we demonstrate explicitly for the beam function, the transverse-momentum-dependent beam function, the jet function and the fragmenting jet function. This approach also highlights the role of crossing symmetry in these calculations. At NNLO we reproduce the quark jet function and calculate the fragmenting quark jet function for the first time.     Electrolytic lesions within central complex neuropils of the cockroach brain affect negotiation of barriers

    Animals must negotiate obstacles in their path in order to successfully function within natural environments. These actions require transitions from walking to other behaviors, many of which are more involved than simple reflexes. For these behaviors to be successful, insects must evaluate objects in their path and then use that information to change posture or re-direct leg movements. Some of this control may occur within a region of the brain known as the central complex (CC). We used discrete electrolytic lesions to examine the role of certain sub-regions of the CC in various obstacle negotiation behaviors. We found that cockroaches with lesions to the protocerebral bridge (PB) and ellipsoid body (EB) exhibit abnormalities in turning and dealing with shelf-like objects; whereas, individuals with lesions to the fan-shaped body (FB) and lateral accessory lobe (LAL), exhibit abnormalities of those behaviors as well as climbing over blocks and up walls to a horizontal plane. Abnormalities in block climbing include decreased success rate, changes in climbing strategy, and delayed response to the block. Increases in these abnormal behaviors were significant in individuals with lesions to the FB and LAL. Although turning abnormalities are present in individuals with lesions to the LAL, EB and the lateral region of the FB, there are some differences in how these deficits present. For instance, the turning deficits seen in individuals with lateral FB lesions only occurred when turning in the direction opposite to the side of the brain on which the lesion occurred. By contrast, individuals with lesions to the EB and LAL exhibited turning abnormalities in both directions. Lesions in the medial region of the FB did not result in directional turning deficits, but in abnormalities in block climbing

    Antenna Showers with Hadronic Initial States

    We present an antenna shower formalism including contributions from initial-state partons and corresponding backwards evolution. We give a set of phase-space maps and antenna functions for massless partons which define a complete shower formalism suitable for computing observables with hadronic initial states. We focus on the initial-state components: initial-initial and initial-final antenna configurations. The formalism includes comprehensive possibilities for uncertainty estimates. We report on some preliminary results obtained with an implementation in the Vincia antenna-shower framework.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    Crustal structure between the Knipovich Ridge and the Van Mijenfjorden (Svalbard)

    The Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research, the University of Bergenand the Hokkaido University acquired new seismic refraction data along a transect fromthe Knipovich Ridge to the inner Van Mijenfjorden in southern Svalbard. A close spacing ofon- and offshore receivers and a dense marine shot pattern provide the data for a high resolutionp-wave velocity model for geological interpretation. Additional new seismic reflection data(University of Bergen) yield structural information for a more reliable analysis.Crustal thickness along the Van Mijenfjorden is 33 to 34 km. Seismic velocities of 5.0 km/sare observed within the upper crustal section of the Tertiary Central Spitsbergen Basin.A Paleozoic sedimentary basin with a depth of 8 to 10 km is associated with the Nordfjorden Block.The seismic velocities are up to 6.0 km/s. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks are expected furtherto the west of the Hornsund Lineament since seismic velocities reveal a similar range here.West of the Bellsund the continental crust thins gradually over a 90 km wide rifted zone.The velocity structure within this section is very complex and comprises zones of decreasedvelocities below the West Spitsbergen Fold Belt (down to 20 km depth) and slightly elevatedvelocities (7.2 km/s) at the crust-mantle transition. The first structure is interpreted as intensivelyfractured rocks linked to post-Late Paleocene transpressive orogenic activity and subsequentlyaffected by transtension during break-up from Greenland. The faster deep-crustal velocities aresupposed to express magmatic intrusions of an unidentified origin. Melts could either be channelled by theSpitsbergen Shear Zone from more distant sources, or originate in magmatic interaction between the northern Knipovich Ridgeand the neighbouring young rifted crust.Oceanic crust each side of the Knipovich Ridge is thin (~3.5 km) and is characterised by theabsence of oceanic layer 3 (3.5/4.1 to 4.7 km/s). The oceanic section exhibits zones of verythin crust (~1 km) that are interpreted as fracture zones. Beneath these we observed decreasedmantle velocities (~7.3 km/s) indicating probable serpentinization of peridotites along thesefracture zones. Thickness variations further provide information about the segmentationand magma supply along the northern Knipovich Ridge
