Use of the Vandercook Proof Press to Predict Rotogravure Print Quality

    Get PDF
The object of this thesis is to investigate a new idea in predicting printability for rotogravure printing. Present proof presses in the gravure industry are clumsy, expensive, and in most cases, impractical for regular use. In order to understand the relationship between ink, paper, and plate, it is necessary to consider many variables such as smoothness, ink receptivity, porosity, moisture content, formation, surface strength, and opacity. The laboratory work performed and presented in this paper shows that a Vandercook proof press may be used to predict printability in the gravure process

    An Introduction to Readers Theatre

    Get PDF
It is common in Japanese university English classrooms to meet students across the spectrum of English levels who lack the confidence and ability to speak fluently. Additionally, many of them have great difficulty in understanding spoken English. Students arenʼt introduced to the rules and conventions of English pronunciation in a way that enables them to assimilate and use this knowledge, and this precludes many learners from speaking smoothly or understanding naturally spoken English. Readers Theatre is a performance-based group activity in which participants read aloud from a script. In English as a foreign language education Readers Theatre may be an effective approach to enable students to achieve greater language fluency and due to its structured nature, build their confidence to speak English. What follows is an introduction to how Readers Theatre can be implemented in the Japanese university classroom with the aim of helping students to develop better English communication skills in relation to pronunciation, fluency, listening skills and confidence

    A University E.S.S. Speech Contest.

English speech contests help students to improve their English ability as well as mastering the skills of public speaking. Holding a speech contest however, has challenges and difficulties for all involved. The teachers, participants and judges must be aware of such challenges in order to address them in the most educationally sound way as possible. What follows is an examination of some of the problems inherent in holding speech contests, how these problems relate to my personal experience as advisor to an English Speaking Society speech contest, and ways in which these challenges can be resolved

An Equivalence Between Secure Network and Index Coding

We extend the equivalence between network coding and index coding by Effros, El Rouayheb, and Langberg to the secure communication setting in the presence of an eavesdropper. Specifically, we show that the most general versions of secure network-coding setup by Chan and Grant and the secure index-coding setup by Dau, Skachek, and Chee, which also include the randomised encoding setting, are equivalent

Clinical Outcomes of Maxillomandibular Advancement Surgery for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

    Get PDF
Objective: To evaluate clinical and radiographic treatment outcomes after maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery on subjects suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort analysis. Subjects underwent pre- and post-surgical polysomnography (PSG) studies and were also asked to complete a subjective self-assessment via the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaire. Twenty-two patients (11 male, 11 female) met the inclusion criteria. Results: The mean pre-surgical apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) score was 48.4 (+/-31.3) and mean ESS score was 11.6 (+/-4.6). After surgery, the mean AHI reduced to 14.0 (+/-15.0) and ESS reduced to 5.7 (+/-3.5). Treatment success was observed in 19 of 22 (86.4%) patients and 8 of 22 (36.4%) met the criteria for treatment cure. Conclusions: MMA surgery is an effective treatment for patients suffering from OSA. Subjective sleepiness levels were significantly reduced after surgery. There were no pre- or post-surgical variables that acted as predictors of successful treatment
