Technology Integration in Tennessee Twenty-first Century Classrooms

    Get PDF
In the study, the population of educators in 21st Century Classrooms across the State of Tennessee was surveyed to determine teachers\u27 satisfaction with 21st Century program implementation and associated changes in instructional practices. During fall 1998, six hundred of the 4,800 21st century classroom teachers were surveyed using the Technology Use Questionnaire. Three hundred two completed surveys were returned. Frequency rates and percentages were calculated for each of the 33 questions and the 8 demographic items. The questions were grouped into 7 subscales: Administration, Teacher Training, Implementation, Integration, Use on the Job, Use at Home and Instructional Change. Correlation analysis determined that at the.05 alpha level there were significant relationships between 5 subscales (Administration, Teacher Training, Implementation of the Technology Plan, Integration, and Use on the Job) and Instructional Change. Conversely, there was no significant relationship between the demographic data and instructional change. In general, teachers were unsatisfied with the implementation of the Master Plan for the 21st Century program and had made only moderate instructional changes. The correlation data supported previous research citing teacher training, use on the job, inclusion in future planning, administrative support as impacting instructional change

Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia In Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Kelley Newton, MD Providence Portland Medical Center – Portland, OR Additional Authors: Janan Markee, MD Patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia have a 5-10% risk of developing autoimmune complications, the most common of which is autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Here we present a case of AIHA in a patient with suspected CLL that underscores several of the diagnostic and treatment challenges unique to this process. A 79-year old man with a history of hypertension, atrial fibrillation, type 2 diabetes and hypothyroidism was undergoing workup for suspected CLL due to a persistent leukocytosis. He then presented to his primary care physician after several weeks of worsening exertional chest pain and dyspnea. On exam, he was noted to be confused as well as mildly jaundiced and was sent to the Emergency Department for work up with a specific concern for ACS given his presenting symptoms. Cardiac workup was unremarkable with a negative troponin, normal BNP and no changes on EKG. Pulmonary CTA was negative for pulmonary embolism. However, his lab work revealed an acute macrocytic anemia with a Hgb of 5.1 as well as a Total bilirubin of 4.1. Additional lab work revealed a significantly decreased haptoglobin, elevated reticulocyte count and IgG/complement positive DAT. CT abd/pelvis showed splenomegaly. The patient was admitted, placed on high dose steroids and 2 units of packed red blood cells were ordered. After some delay due to an inability to find compatible blood, he received several ABO and RhD matched units. After several days, his hemoglobin stabilized and reticulocyte count and Tbili down trended. He was discharged on high dose steroids to be tapered down once his Hgb\u3e10 over the course of 4-6 months, with outpatient oncology follow up. This case highlights several important points in the diagnosis and treatment of AIHA in CLL. Firstly, it is important to note that in virtually all cases of warm AIHA cross-matches will be incompatible as auto-antibodies will recognize blood group antigens and react to the vast majority of donor red cells. Consequently, ABO and RhD matched blood should be given in severe anemia requiring urgent blood transfusion. The blood should be given slowly with careful monitoring for transfusion reaction, though the risk of this is low. Another important consideration in the workup and treatment of AIHA is the substantial risk of VTE in these patients. Given the presentation of dyspnea in this patient, ruling out concomitant PE is especially crucial. Lastly, the relatively high rate of AIHA in CLL workup for hematologic malignancy should be considered in patients presenting with apparently idiopathic AIHA.https://digitalcommons.psjhealth.org/ppmc_internal/1010/thumbnail.jp

What a difficult task it is for music to fulfil the demands of an epic theatre: a discussion of the role of epic music in Bertolt Brecht's plays

Music is an essential component of theatre. Music was crucial for the early Greek plays, to the height of Italian opera and up to our current theatre. The writer and director Bertolt Brecht recognized the impact music had in the theatre and incorporated music into his extensive Epic Theatre theories. At the same time though, I have encountered discontinuity between Theatre and Music Studies, as the two rarely overlap. In this thesis I look to ascertain the exact role that music plays within Brecht’s Epic Theatre theories. I will also discuss if Brecht’s theories operate in the same format for all of my case studies and lastly, I will conclude if Brecht’s theories were static or if they developed over time. With this I hope to determine if Brecht’s Epic Music is an achievable theatrical device. To do this, I will first define Epic Theatre and Epic Music. From this I will formulate a structure against which to place the plays The Threepenny Opera, The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (1930) and The Mother (1932). I will then analyse my three case studies against this structure to determine how the music functions within each play. From this point I aim to determine the exact role that music plays within Brecht’s theories in order to give proper weight and significance to an essential component of Epic Theatre and to determine if Epic Music is a viable theory

Wilson and musical collaboration: the dramaturgy of music and musicians in Robert Wilson's practice

This dissertation looks to investigate the intricate dramaturgies of Wilson’s practice by focusing on the devising process he has shared with a number of composers and sounds artists, namely Philip Glass, Hans-Peter Kuhn, Tom Waits, and Antony Hegarty. This will challenge the notion of Wilson being the sole author of “Wilsonian theatre,” as well as argue for the importance of music within his practice. It will also engage with ideas of musicalization, as defined by Hans-Thies Lehmann, by performing a close analysis of several of productions that Wilson has directed, such as Einstein on the Beach (1976), Christoph Gluck’s Alcestes (1987), Orlando (1989), The Black Rider (1990), Madama Butterfly (1993), and The Life and Death of Marina Abramović (2011)
