A Study of the Relationship between Mining and the Performing Arts in Australia 1850 – 1914: case studies of the Ballarat and Kalgoorlie-Boulder goldfields.

In describing the historical development of these two settlements based on mining, this thesis outlines the ways in which the performing arts played a significant role in the evolving social and cultural development of both centres and that mining, especially in the form of the these two goldrushes, was highly influential in the distinctive development of the performing arts in Australia in the second half of the nineteenth century and beyond

Proxy Wars & Sovereignty: The Ethics and Impacts of Proxy War on State Sovereignty

    Get PDF
Proxy war has been utilized by states since the age of the Romans. From the Byzantine-Sassanian wars to the Vietnam War, countries have involved themselves in other countries’ conflicts for centuries in the name of national interest. However, the involvement in proxy war opens a door to vast considerations of ethics and implications to the internal resources and national security interests of a state. Furthermore, proxy warfare can impact the sovereignty of both the warring states and the countries pulling the strings; thus, it is necessary to evaluate and understand the impact proxy war has on state sovereignty. This paper seeks to identify the definition of proxy war and proxy war’s impact on state sovereignty through comparative case study on the Second Libyan Civil War and the current Yemen crisis. This paper also establishes the ethical considerations of proxy war under Just War Theory

Towards an understanding of profound mental handicap

    Get PDF
A brief introduction to profound mental handicap (PMH) is given. Problems in identifying the population to be studied are described, and detailed criteria, based upon behavioural characteristics, are proposed. A comprehensive survey of research literature relevant to people with profound mental handicap is presented, and inadequacies discussed. Frameworks within which to place the behaviour of the profoundly mentally handicapped are also discussed, and a modified developmental framework is suggested. An argument is made for the usefulness of conducting research which is informed by mother-infant studies and which examines the naturally occurring behaviour of the profoundly mentally handicapped, paying particular attention to communicative and emotional characteristics. The behaviour of a representative sample of 66 people with profound handicap, living at home or in one of three institutions, is investigated using micro-analysis of filmed sessions between carer and subject, and information gathered from two oral questionnaires administered to carers. A reliable profile of the behavioural characteristics of this sample of people with profound handicap is therefore obtained.Important findings include: a high level of awareness and engagement to the carer indicating a general responsiveness amongst people with profound handicap to aspects of the environment, and the ability to communicate with other people; evidence of a wide variety of social and emotional behaviours, in particular a discriminating sense of humour; evidence of spontaneous learning; and the presence of a 'responsiveness' factor underlying the behaviour of people with profound handicap, and dividing the subjects into distinct subgroups. The implications of these findings for the day-to-day care of people with profound handicap, and for an improved understanding of the nature of profound mental handicap are discussed

“Un/Identified Remains: The Impolitics of Non-Identity”

AbstractFor some time now, queer theory has uncritically assumed that identity politics should be rejected outright. Through a theoretical and biographical discussion of Michel Foucault’s resistance against the subject—his attempts at subject effacement—this paper argues that resistance is not realized through non-identity politics alone. It addresses two main questions: does the practice of non-identity sufficiently resist knowledge that (re)presents subjects and what are the social and political possibilities or risks of subject effacement? In response to these questions, it argues that, although the queer politics of non-identity is a mode of resistance, it is not sufficient as resistance in all contexts or fields of knowledge. It suggests that in many contexts, what Foucault refers to as the “infinite possibility of self” or the interruption of the subject cannot be realized through invisibility politics: in many contexts this possibility can only be experienced if and when the subject comes face to face with the presence of an other-subject.RĂ©sumĂ©Depuis un certain temps, la thĂ©orie queer suppose de façon incontestĂ©e que les politiques d’identitĂ© devraient ĂȘtre rejetĂ©es d’emblĂ©e.

A Comparison of Vertical Ground Reaction Forces in Single-leg Jump Take-offs and Double-leg Jump Take-offs in Indoor Collegiate Volleyball Players

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine if differences in vertical ground reaction forces (vGRFs) exist between single-leg take-off approaches (SL) and double-leg take-off approaches (DL) and if sex or positional differences existed in vGRFs in SL- or DL-style approaches. It was hypothesized that DL jumps would generate greater vGRFs, males would generate greater vGRFs in both styles, and middle blockers would have higher SL vGRFs while pin hitters would have higher DL vGRFs. Nine collegiate volleyball players (4 female; 5 male) (age: 20.44 ± 1.42 years; height: 186.02 ± 6.44 cm; body mass: 78.21 ± 10.63kg; body fat: 11.66 ±5.62%) were tested. An AMTI force plate collected vGRFs with three recorded trials per approach style per subject with randomization of jump-style order. The level of significance was set at p\u3c 0.05. No significant differences were found between vGRFs and position or SL and DL vGRFs. Males had significantly higher vGRFs overall compared to females (p=0.007). Male SL vGRFs were significantly larger than females (p=0.017). DL, relative SL, and relative DL vGRFs were not significantly different between genders. Height, mass, and body fat percentage had at least moderate correlations to combined vGRFs, and height moderately correlated to DL vGRFs. These results suggest that both takeoffs have similar enough force load to be interchangeable. Strength coaches may use both styles to train their athletes and improve neural integration. Positional jump loads during practice or games may be tracked interchangeably in style regarding the take-off phase
