    Processing of Byzantine Neume Notation in Ancient Historical Manuscripts

    This article presents the principal results of the doctoral thesis “Recognition of neume notation in historical documents” by Lasko Laskov (Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), successfully defended before the Specialized Academic Council for Informatics and Mathematical Modelling on 07 June 2010.Byzantine neume notation is a specific form of note script, used by the Orthodox Christian Church since ancient times until nowadays for writing music and musical forms in sacred documents. Such documents are an object of extensive scientific research and naturally with the development of computer and information technologies the need of a software tool which can assist these efforts is needed. In this paper a set of algorithms for processing and analysis of Byzantine neume notation are presented which include document image segmentation, character feature vector extraction, classifier learning and character recognition.     Application of Wavelet Decomposition to Document Line Segmentation

    ACM Computing Classification System (1998): I.7, I.7.5.In this paper an approach to document line segmentation is presented. The algorithm is based on a wavelet transform of the horizontal projective profile of the document image. The projective profile is examined as a one-dimensional discrete signal which is decomposed using the pyramidal wavelet algorithm up to a precise scale, where local minima and maxima are discovered. These local extrema, projected into the input signal, correspond to the spacing between document lines and to the pivots of the lines. The method has been tested on a broad set of printed and handwritten documents and proven to be stable and efficient

    Adaptive Document Image Binarization with Application in Processing Astronomical Logbooks

    ACM Computing Classification System (1998): I.7, I.7.5.Recently, the digitalization of the astronomical scientific heritage has been considered an important task that can facilitate much researches in astronomy. The creation of digital libraries and databases of astronomical photographic plates brings up the problem of digitalization astronomical logbooks, since the data contained in them is crucial for the usage of the plates. An optical character recognition (OCR) system for the handwritten numerical data is needed in order to speed up the process of database creation and extension. In this paper document image binarization is considered since it is a critical stage for the subsequent steps in an OCR software system.     Data Extraction from Carte Du Ciel Triple Images

    Carte du Ciel (from French, map of the sky) is a part of a 19th century extensive international astronomical project whose goal was to map the entire visible sky. The results of this vast effort were collected in the form of astrographic plates and their paper representatives that are called astrographic maps and are widely distributed among many observatories and astronomical institutes over the world. Our goal is to design methods and algorithms to automatically extract data from digitized Carte du Ciel astrographic maps. This paper examines the image processing and pattern recognition techniques that can be adopted for automatic extraction of astronomical data from stars’ triple expositions that can aid variable stars detection in Carte du Ciel maps

    MIRIAM: A Multimodal Chat-Based Interface for Autonomous Systems

    We present MIRIAM (Multimodal Intelligent inteRactIon for Autonomous systeMs), a multimodal interface to support situation awareness of autonomous vehicles through chat-based interaction. The user is able to chat about the vehicle's plan, objectives, previous activities and mission progress. The system is mixed initiative in that it pro-actively sends messages about key events, such as fault warnings.     Working Behind Bars: Employed Prisoners' Perception of Professional Training and Employment in Prison

    The research is aimed at examining the perceptions and attitudes of prisoners employed in enterprises in prison vis-à-vis employment and deriving conclusions regarding the impact of employment on the lives of prisoners in prison and its contribution to advancing their rehabilitation. Doing time is generally a painful experience, both physically and mentally, and often adversely influences prisoners' life after release. Programs and activities have been developed in prisons in many countries, including Israel, to mitigate these impacts and at the same time reduce recidivism following release. A key such program is employment in enterprises within the prison walls, including training of prisoners in a variety of professions. In the framework of the present qualitative research 20 prisoners employed in enterprises in Israeli prisons were interviewed, and these aired their perceptions regarding employment and its effects. Three main themes and 18 sub-themes defining the attitudes of the prisoners to the issue emerged from the interviews. The first two themes are: employment provides benefits and alleviates the pains of imprisonment; and employment helps prisoners' rehabilitation. The third theme emerging from the statements of an isolated number of prisoners is: employment is an act of exploitation on the part of the Prison Service and serves no useful purpose. The overall conclusion of the study is that employment in enterprises in prison is generally perceived by the prisoners as positive and contributory, in terms of both reducing the damage caused by imprisonment and raising the likelihood of the prisoner being rehabilitated through employment following his release

    SYNTHESIS, ASSEMBLY, AND SECRETION OF GAMMA GLOBULIN BY MOUSE MYELOMA CELLS : I. ADAPTATION OF THE MERWIN PLASMA CELL TUMOR-11 TO CULTURE, CLONING, AND CHARACTERIZATION OF GAMMA GLOBULIN SUBUNITS

    MPC-11 myeloma tumor cells were adapted to growth in continuous culture. The cultured cells resembled the parent tumor in that they produced the fully assembled gamma globulin molecules as well as six unassembled molecules. Although cultured and tumor cells synthesized excess light chains, the molar ratio of light (L) to heavy (H) chains was approximately 1.7:1 in the culture, and 3.5:1 in the tumor. The cultured cells also produced fewer half molecules and free light chains than the parent tumor. Peptide column analysis did not reveal differences in the primary structure of the H chains derived from the parent tumor and the culture. The L chains may have differed by a minor peptide. As much as 20% of the newly labeled cytoplasmic proteins and almost 100% of the proteins secreted by the cultured myeloma cells could be precipitated by specific antiserum. The immune precipitates contained seven different gamma globulin molecules, six of which were characterized according to their molecular size and H and L chain content as fully assembled molecules (H2L2), heavy chain dimers (H2), half molecules (HL), H, light chain dimers (L2), and L chains. All gamma globulin subunits as well as the complete H2L2 molecule were produced and secreted by splenic clones of the parent MPC-11 tumor, and agar clones of the cultured cells. This indicates that the various gamma globulin subunits were produced by the same cell and did not reflect cellular heterogeneity with respect to gamma globulin synthesis

    INDEPENDENT SYNTHESIS OF LIGHT AND HEAVY CHAINS : Quantitation of Light-Chain Production by Mouse Myeloma Variants

    The rates of immunoglobulin synthesis have been examined in two MFC-11 cell lines which were independently adapted to tissue culture and in light-chain-producing variants derived from each of them. One cell line synthesized 2.5 pg immunoglobulin/cell/h, while the other synthesized 3.6 pg immunoglobulin/cell/h. The ratio of heavy and light chains in the two cell lines was approximately the same, and the size of the intracellular pool of immunoglobulin was proportioned to the rate of synthesis. Variants which had spontaneously lost the ability to produce heavy chains continued to synthesize light chains at approximately the same rate as their parent cell line

    Difficulties and Challenges in an Employment Supervision Program for Paroled Prisoners

    The integration of paroled prisoners in employment is presented in the theoretical and research-based literature as one of the principal means of achieving successful re-entry by the prisoners into the community. The literature deals extensively with the correlation between integration and perseverance in employment and risk indices, the most pronounced of which is a return to crime. According to the Theory of Desistance from Crime, it is not enough for criminal activity to cease; a complex process must set in motion to bring about a change in perceptions and behaviour in all walks of life, especially regarding employment. A key program being implemented by Israel's Prisoner Rehabilitation Authority is one involving an employment guidance and supervision program for paroled prisoners. The program emphasizes employment in all its facets – placement, support during the period of employment and supervision during parole – alongside psychological treatment and rehabilitation in the community. Operating the program are employment supervisors and psychotherapists. In order to understand how the program is managed and perceived by its operators, in-depth interviews were conducted with seven psychotherapists and employment counsellors in the framework of the present qualitative-interpretive research. The article describes the perceptions of the personnel responsible for running the program during the period 2018-2020. The findings of the research highlight the difficulties and limitations the prisoners face, harmony and dissonance in the encounter between supervisors and psychotherapists, the dilemma over protection of society vs. assistance to the prisoners, employment characteristics as indicative of the rehabilitation process, and the merits of the program. The article also discusses the contribution of employment supervision to successful reintegration of paroled prisoners in normative employment and society
