Renormalization by Continuous Unitary Transformations: One-Dimensional Spinless Fermions
A renormalization scheme for interacting fermionic systems is presented where
the renormalization is carried out in terms of the fermionic degrees of
freedom. The scheme is based on continuous unitary transformations of the
hamiltonian which stays hermitian throughout the renormalization flow, whereby
any frequency dependence is avoided. The approach is illustrated in detail for
a model of spinless fermions with nearest neighbour repulsion in one dimension.
Even though the fermionic degrees of freedom do not provide an easy starting
point in one dimension very good results are obtained which agree well with the
exact findings based on Bethe ansatz.Comment: 17 pages, figures included some revisions concerning the comparison

kurz. The digestive tract including the attached glands of Osprey, Eurasian Buzzard,
Marsh-Harrier, Red Kite, Sparrow-Hawk, Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon and Honey
Buzzard were demonstrated anatomically and histologically with regard to
species-specific adaptations to their typical prey and manner of feeding.
The oesophagus of the examined raptor birds is covered with an inner cutaneous
mucous membrane. It contains mucous glands which decrease in number in the
crop. A spindle-shaped genuine crop is always present. In the Lamina propriae
mucosae of oesophagus and crop of all examined raptor bird species, single
smooth muscle fibres insertions are detectable. The inner glands of the
proventriculus are arranged longitudinal bulges. The mucous membrane of the
gizzard contains a Lamina muscularis mucosae in all examined species.
The Duodenum of Red Kite, Kestrel and Peregrine Falcon is arranged in a snail-
shell-like coil. The Jejunoileum forms a double intestinal spiral in
Sparrowhawk, Kestrel and Peregrine Falcon. The Caeca of all examined species
regress to form a short rounded object which contains much lymphatic tissue.
The liver is always bilobed. The Osprey has an extremely long intestinal tract
which. A prominent Stratum compactum in the Lamina propria mucosae is
detectable in the digestive tract of this species. The Eurasian Buzzard, which
usually does perch hunting, takes advantage of a wide variety of prey,
therefore its intestinal tract needs to be longer compared to species with
avian prey, but not as long as in the Osprey.
The gut of the Marsh-Harrier is longer and thinner-walled compared to that of
the Eurasian Buzzard. The Red Kite develops by far the longest duodenum and
also in all a long digestive tract which enables the use of varying, low
quality food (carrion).
The Sparrow-Hawk displays a short digestive tract, but this enables it to save
weight and be maneuverable for its hunt on avian prey. Thus, it is dependant
on highly digestible food. The Kestrels short gut is adapted to its hunt of
prey, therefore economising on weight and length. The digestive tract of the
Peregrine Falcon shows similarities to that of the Kestrel. The Diverticulum
vitelli of Meckel of this species has developed into a distinct lymphatic
organ. The digestive tract of the Honey Buzzard is adapted to highly
digestible food and therefore comparatively short
Unintended Consequences: Reverberations of Special Immigrant Juvenile Status
This paper details the socio-legal factors that shape the relationship between the child, the family, and the state, and the ways unaccompanied migrant children’s lives have come to be defined and contested. The legal identity of migrant children is socially situated within a history that intertwines social movements of helping professionals, legal jurisdictions characterized by increasingly intolerant approaches to juveniles, and shifts in the treatment of unauthorized migrant youth under immigration law over time. In a globalized world, this triangular relationship between children, families, and the state becomes increasingly complex and dynamic. Social policies and legal norms often lag far behind the diverse and fluid domestic arrangements of transnational family ties. The article begins by tracing how the creation of the juvenile court and the emergence of the tutelary complex have radically shifted the notion of migrant children as legal subjects in the United States. Through the legal case of Polovchak v. Meese and the advent of the Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) status, the author argues that the law and institutional practices ensnare youth between competing allegiances to the state and to the family. It is critical to understand the gravity of these forces on the ways youth navigate the complex and uneven terrain of everyday life. Key Take Away Points Examines of the socio-legal history of contemporary response to unaccompanied children Traces of the emergence of the Special Immigration Juvenile status Analyzes of the unintended consequences of SIJ that ensnare unaccompanied children between competing allegiances to the state and to their families
Petroleum Tanker Shipping on German Inland Waterways, 1887-1994
Tanker shipping today is one of the major branches of German inland navigation. Indeed, the transport of petroleum and its derivatives together comprise nearly twenty percent of total inland shipping; more than 42,000,000 tons of liquid petroleum products were shipped in 1996 by a fleet with a total cargo capacity of more than 500,000 tons.\u27 Tanker shipping is by far the largest kind of specialist transportation on German inland waterways. But because of its very special technical requirements, a high degree of dependence on a small group of shippers, and a number of risks peculiar to this trade, there are enough structural differences to make it useful to take a closer look at this sector of inland navigation from a historical perspective
Recasting the Agency of Unaccompanied Youth
This is Chapter 6 of Emerging Perspectives on Children in Migratory Circumstances: Selected Proceedings of the Working Group on Childhood and Migration June 2008 Conference, published by Drexel University Department of Culture & Communication. Click for full-text.
Excerpt from the book abstract:
Most of the pieces provide in depth points of view from child migrant perspectives—data that is often difficult to obtain and portray sensitively. Child-centered data is exceptionally valuable in helping us to grasp the micro-forces by which childhood is changing through migration and how children experience or activate agency under trying conditions...Lauren Heidbrink [discusses] Spanish speakers in immigration detention in the U.S
Red Marks Don\u27t Always Bleed
Editor’s Note
In “Red Marks Don’t Always Bleed,” Ashley Heidbrink recalls the woman who taught her how to craft an essay through numerous revisions. Her casual tone and light humor belie the complexity of the writing. Look at the dashes and semi-colons in the first sentence: “I looked down at the paper in front of me—it was covered in red ink—words were crossed out; grammar was corrected;
no white remained on the paper.” What does punctuation like this tell you about the author? Heidbrink also uses a variety of sentence styles and lengths in her writing. For example, she asks, “Was my paper really that horrible?” and later, “. . . what would I write about?” What effects do the questions create in this essay?
Heidbrink describes the process of revising in great detail. She most likely revised the essay that follows more than once before she turned it in. How does she feel about the revision process? How do you feel about revising
Fish fingers: an exhibition and research project at the German Maritime Museums, Bremerhaven
