Effects of Dismissal Protection Legislation on Individual Employment Stability in Germany

    Get PDF
Changes in Dismissal Protection Legislation in Germany have been a subject to ongoing research in the past decade. The majority of these studies, however, has not been able to determine significant effects on job and worker flows in firms affected by the reforms. We estimate the impact of dismissal protection on individual employment stability using the 1999 reform as a "natural experiment".We provide insights into the effects of legislation on the firms’ matching behaviour. Our results hint at increased job security after the reform for those spells affected by it. This rise in stability was, however, accompanied by modest instability at start suggesting that firms facing additional firing costs tend to cease probation to shed unproductive job-worker matches. The latter effect, however, was not found to be significant.J32, J65, C41

Heap : a command for estimating discrete outcome variable models in the presence of heaping at known points

Self-reported survey data are often plagued by the presence of heaping. Accounting for this measurement error is crucial for the identification and consistent estimation of the underlying model (parameters) from such data. In this article, we introduce two commands. The first command, heapmph, estimates the parameters of a discrete-time mixed proportional hazard model with gammaunobserved heterogeneity, allowing for fixed and individual-specific censoring and different-sized heap points. The second command, heapop, extends the framework to ordered choice outcomes, subject to heaping. We also provide suitable specification tests

Comparison of gurson and lemaitre model in the context of blanking simulation of a high strength steel

    Get PDF
The process of blanking takes place in a short band with high accumulated strain undergoing various stress triaxialities. Enhanced implementations for shear and compressive loads of Gurson’s and Lemaitre’s model are directly compared for the same blanking setup. For a dual phase steel DP600 the Lemaitre parameters are identified completely by an inverse strategy, while the parameters of the Gurson’s porous plasticity model are predominantly gained from analysis with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The models are validated by comparison of force-displacement curves, time point and location of crack initiation. Advantages and disadvantages of both approaches are discussed with respect to prediction accuracy and costs of parameter identification. Both of the models deliver an exact prediction for the location of the crack and a good prediction of the punch displacement at the onset of cracking

The Uncoordinated Potential of Libraries to Achieve Open Access Now: How the Transition to Open Access Could be Accelerated by Libraries Working Together

DOI: 10.12685/027.7-2-1-48The last ten years have shown, that Open Access is not only a vision, but has become real. Libraries are in a good position to push Open Access even further, as they currently fully pay the production costs of the traditional subscription model. SCOAP3 demonstrates that coordination among libraries is not unlikely and could lead to more Open Access immediately.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SYMBOLIC AND CULTURAL POLITICS IN THE MARCUS GARVEY MOVEMENT

    Get PDF
This research incorporates interdisciplinary data in order to discuss the Marcus Garvey Movement which emerged in the urban North during the World War I era. The importance of symbolic and cultural politics for Garvey's appeal to newly arriving, often uneducated and unskilled northern urban Blacks, is elaborated. Such forms of symbolic communication and politics, along with Garvey's inability to anticipate repression and other macro-structural issues and conditions, created intense conflicts with potential allies, as well as his own followers. Garvey's form of ideological or symbolic politics provided short run successes in the recruitment of poor, relatively uneducated segments of the Harlem community to his racial struggle. However, in the long run, Garvey failed to provide leadership and tactical direction for a sustained broad based movement for racial equality
