The Impact of EU Membership on the Economic Governance of Spain

Spain was not admitted to the then European Economic Community during the Francos regime for political reasons. Joining the EU on January 1986 was the last and final step forward towards the definitive consolidation of democracy in Spain and the consolidation of the opening of the Spanish Economy. The results over the first twenty five years of membership have translated into an unprecedented boost of modernization and progress. Spain adopted the Acquis Communautaire and received considerable benefits from EU membership, eliminating barriers, following the common policies , re ceiving European funds and adopting the European common currency . From an index of 60 per cent of the European income average in 1986, todays income even after the crisis that started in 2008- is in the range of 105 per cent. The last three years have been different and difficult due to the severe economic and financial crisis. El proceso de ingreso de Islandia a la UE como reto para la Presidencia española

Se repasa el contexto en el que se presenta la candidatura islandesa a la adhesión y se formulan propósitos respecto a cómo la Presidencia española debe gestionar eficazmente el proceso teniendo en cuenta la muy similar experiencia ampliatoria de 1995 y tratando de no romper los difíciles equilibrios actuales de la UE frente a otras solicitudes de adhesión. El gobierno islandés presentó por sorpresa su solicitud de ingreso a la UE a finales de julio de 2009, obteniendo el visto bueno del Consejo casi inmediatamente a pesar de la escasa mayoría parlamentaria en la que se basaba la solicitud. Con el ritmo impuesto por la Presidencia sueca, parece normal que sea España la encargada de abrir las negociaciones intergubernamentales para el ingreso de Islandia en la UE, una vez la nueva Comisión designada de acuerdo con el Tratado de Lisboa dé a conocer el Dictamen analizando los temas que van a exigir una más ardua negociación.
