    Exploring the Properties of Fiber Reinforced Concrete

    Corrosion of steel reinforced concrete results in unsafe structures and significant economic costs. This project investigated using polymer, steel, and glass fibers in concrete to reduce corrosion by decreasing the permeability of concrete, which is the first line of defense against corrosion. The results suggested that polymer fibers resulted in high corrosion resistance, glass fibers increased flexural strength, and steel fibers improved yield strength but reduced fire resistance

    An empirical analysis of the impact of public expenditures on education and health on poverty in Indian states

    The principal objective of this study is to test whether public expenditures on education, health and other development activities have been effective in reducing poverty in India. To ensure sensitivity and robustness of the results, three different measures of poverty belonging to the Foster-Greer-Thorbecke group of poverty measures are used. We consider various types of education expenditures, viz., government expenditures on elementary, secondary, higher/university and “other” levels. Data for fourteen Indian states from 13th to 53rd rounds of National Sample Survey of India are used for estimating poverty. Using unbalanced panel data techniques, we test Fixed effects, Random effects and OLS models, and concludes that education, health and development expenditures help reduce poverty. In particular, expenditure on higher, university, technical, adult and vocational educations as opposed to elementary and secondary education is more effective in poverty reduction. Several policy conclusions are advanced

    The intracellular translocation of the components of the fibroblast growth factor 1 release complex precedes their assembly prior to export

    The release of signal peptideless proteins occurs through nonclassical export pathways and the release of fibroblast growth factor (FGF)1 in response to cellular stress is well documented. Although biochemical evidence suggests that the formation of a multiprotein complex containing S100A13 and Synaptotagmin (Syt)1 is important for the release of FGF1, it is unclear where this intracellular complex is assembled. As a result, we employed real-time analysis using confocal fluorescence microscopy to study the spatio-temporal aspects of this nonclassical export pathway and demonstrate that heat shock stimulates the redistribution of FGF1 from a diffuse cytosolic pattern to a locale near the inner surface of the plasma membrane where it colocalized with S100A13 and Syt1. In addition, coexpression of dominant-negative mutant forms of S100A13 and Syt1, which both repress the release of FGF1, failed to inhibit the stress-induced peripheral redistribution of intracellular FGF1. However, amlexanox, a compound that is known to attenuate actin stress fiber formation and FGF1 release, was able to repress this process. These data suggest that the assembly of the intracellular complex involved in the release of FGF1 occurs near the inner surface of the plasma membrane and is dependent on the F-actin cytoskeleton

    Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy with cisplatin and doxorubicin or oxaliplatin for peritoneal metastasis from pancreatic adenocarcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma

    Background: Systemic chemotherapy for pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CC) with peritoneal metastases (PM) is affected by several pharmacological shortcomings and low clinical efficacy. Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) is expected to maximize exposure of peritoneal nodules to antiblastic agents. This study aims to evaluate safety and efficacy of PIPAC for PM of PDAC and CC origin. Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of consecutive PDAC and CC cases with PM treated with PIPAC at two European referral centers for peritoneal disease. We prospectively recorded from August 2016 to May 2019 demographic, clinical, surgical, and oncological data. We performed a feasibility and safety assessment and an efficacy analysis based on clinical and pathological regression. Results: Twenty patients with PM from PDAC (14) and CC (six) underwent 45 PIPAC administrations. Cisplatin–doxorubicin or oxaliplatin were administered to eight and 12 patients, respectively. We experienced one intraoperative complication (small bowel perforation) and 18 grade 1–2 postoperative adverse events according to Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 4.0. A pathological regression was recorded in 50% of patients (62% in the cisplatin–doxorubicin cohort and 42% in the oxaliplatin one). Median survival from the first PIPAC was 9.7 and 10.9 months for PDAC and CC, respectively. Conclusion: PIPAC resulted feasible and safe without relevant toxicity issues, with both cisplatin–doxorubicin and oxaliplatin. The pathological response observed supports the evidence of antitumoral activity. Despite the study limitations, these outcomes are encouraging, recommending PIPAC in prospective, controlled trials in the palliative setting or the first line chemotherapy for PM from PDAC and CC

    Copper Chelation Represses the Vascular Response to Injury

    The induction of an acute inflammatory response followed by the release of polypeptide cytokines and growth factors from peripheral blood monocytes has been implicated in mediating the response to vascular injury. Because the Cu2+-binding proteins IL-1alpha and fibroblast growth factor 1 are exported into the extracellular compartment in a stress-dependent manner by using intracellular Cu2+ to facilitate the formation of S100A13 heterotetrameric complexes and these signal peptideless polypeptides have been implicated as regulators of vascular injury in vivo, we examined the ability of Cu2+ chelation to repress neointimal thickening in response to injury. We observed that the oral administration of the Cu2+ chelator tetrathiomolybdate was able to reduce neointimal thickening after balloon injury in the rat. Interestingly, although immunohistochemical analysis of control neointimal sections exhibited prominent staining for MAC1, IL-1alpha, S100A13, and the acidic phospholipid phosphatidylserine, similar sections obtained from tetrathiomolybdate-treated animals did not. Further, adenoviral gene transfer of the IL-1 receptor antagonist during vascular injury also significantly reduced the area of neointimal thickening. Our data suggest that intracellular copper may be involved in mediating the response to injury in vivo by its ability to regulate the stress-induced release of IL-1alpha by using the nonclassical export mechanism employed by human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro

    Effect of long-lasting insecticidal nets with and without piperonyl butoxide on malaria indicators in Uganda (LLINEUP): final results of a cluster-randomised trial embedded in a national distribution campaign

    Background Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) are the foundation of malaria control but resistance of mosquito vectors to pyrethroids threatens their effectiveness. We embedded a cluster-randomised trial into Uganda’s 2017–18 campaign to distribute LLINs. LLINs with piperonyl butoxide (PBO) reduced parasite prevalence more effectively than conventional LLINs (without PBO) for 18 months. Here, we report the final 25-month survey results. Methods LLINEUP was a cluster-randomised trial conducted in 48 districts in eastern and western Uganda. 104 health subdistricts (clusters) without ongoing or planned indoor residual spraying with pirimiphos-methyl (Actellic, Basel, Switzerland) were eligible for inclusion in the trial. Clusters were randomly assigned to PBO LLINs (PermaNet 3.0 or Olyset Plus) and conventional LLINs (PermaNet 2.0 or Olyset Net) with proportionate randomisation using STATA version 14.2. LLINs were delivered from March 25, 2017, to March 18, 2018. Between April 23, 2019, and Sept 13, 2019, community surveys were conducted in 50 randomly selected households per cluster; ten households per cluster were randomly selected for entomology surveys. Mosquitoes were collected in the morning from indoor surfaces of households using Prokopack aspirators. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 90 of the 104 clusters were surveyed at 25 months. The primary outcome was parasite prevalence by microscopy in children aged 2–10 years, assessed in the as-treated population, determined using the results from the 6-month household survey on the type of LLINs received in each cluster. This trial is registered with ISRCTN, ISRCTN17516395, and is now completed. Findings In the as-treated analysis, two clusters were excluded (no predominant LLIN received) and four were reassigned; 40 PBO LLIN clusters (30 PermaNet 3.0, ten Olyset Plus) and 48 non-PBO LLIN (36 PermaNet 2.0, 12 Olyset Net) were included. Parasite prevalence was 17·1% (506 of 2958 participants) in the PBO group and 19·8% (701 of 3534) in the non-PBO group (prevalence ratio adjusted for baseline 0·80 [95% CI 0·69–0·93], p=0·0048). Comparing within-treatment group parasite prevalence to baseline, parasite prevalence ratios were lower in the PBO groups at all timepoints, but the difference was greatest at 6 months (PBO LLINs parasite prevalence at baseline 28·8% [1001 of 3472, 95% CI 27·3–30·4] vs at 6 months 12·0% [361 of 3009, 10·9–13·2], prevalence ratio [PR] 0·43 [95% CI 0·36–0·52], p<0·0001; non-PBO LLINs parasite prevalence at baseline 25·4% [1015 of 4004, 24·0–26·7] vs 6 months 14·8% [526 of 3551, 13·7–16·0], PR 0·60 [0·54–0·68], p<0·0001) and 25 months (PBO LLINs parasite prevalence at 25 months 17·1% [506 of 2958, 15·8–18·5], PR 0·63 [95% CI 0·57–0·71], p<0·0001; non-PBO LLINs parasite prevalence at 25 months 19·8% [701 of 3534, 18·5–21·2], PR 0·79 [0·73–0·86], p<0·0001). Interpretation In Uganda, PBO LLINs outperformed pyrethroid-only LLINs for 25 months. WHO concluded that PBO LLINs are more effective against malaria than non-PBO LLINs when resistance to pyrethroids is high and issued a conditional recommendation suggesting PBO LLINs should be deployed in areas of pyrethroid resistance

    Fall Detection with Unobtrusive Infrared Array Sensors

    As the world’s aging population grows, fall is becoming a major problem in public health. It is one of the most vital risks to the elderly. Many technology based fall detection systems have been developed in recent years with hardware ranging from wearable devices to ambience sensors and video cameras. Several machine learning based fall detection classifiers have been developed to process sensor data with various degrees of success. In this paper, we present a fall detection system using infrared array sensors with several deep learning methods, including long-short-term-memory and gated recurrent unit models. Evaluated with fall data collected in two different sets of configurations, we show that our approach gives significant improvement over existing works using the same infrared array sensor

    Development and evaluation of an accelerometry system based on inverted pendulum to measure and analyze human balance

    An accelerometry system was developed based on the inverted pendulum model and its effectiveness to measure the body's sway path and sway angle was verified in healthy adult volunteers. Sway path represents the body’s movement from its center of mass position projected to the ground surface while sway angle represents the body's orientation from the vertical. Mathematical models were developed to determine the sway displacement and sway angle from the accelerometry system. The resulting values were compared with the manual measurements obtained from a plumb bob based setup and found to correlate closely. Using the developed system, measures that analyzed the contribution of the visual, somatosensory and vestibular systems to balance were obtained. It was found that the accelerometry system followed the principle of motion of an inverted pendulum and provided information that can assist in better understanding of balance and thus it may assist clinicians in diagnosing balance dysfunctions
