Examining the role of Duration of illness on the level of mental disability in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

    Get PDF
Recent literature considers duration of illness (DI) and duration of untreatedillness (DUI) as important factors influencing outcome in many psychiatric conditions. The aimof the present article is to analyze the relationship between DI and DUI, and pharmacologicalresponse in the different psychiatric disorders with particular emphasis on neurodegenerativeaspects. An updated review of the current literature was conducted through PubMed in orderto compare different studies focused on DI and DUI, and treatment response in major psychosesand in depressive/anxiety disorders. A significant body of evidence shows that a prolongedDI and DUI is associated with brain abnormalities and poor treatment response, particularly inschizophrenia. Nevertheless, an increasing number of studies point toward a similar conclusionin mood and anxiety disorders as well, even though fewer studies have been published in thisfield. The present study was undertaken to assess and compare the disability in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) using Indian Disability Evaluation Assessment Scale (IDEAS). Results indicated Significant disabilityin work and global score was seen in patients of obsessive-compulsive disorder with duration of illness >5 yr. it was concluded that these illnesses affect all areas of daily functioning leading to greaterdisability, and thus increasing the burden on the family, pose greater challenge for therehabilitation of patients and their inclusion in the mainstream of the family and society. Furtherstudies on a larger sample need to be done to confirm the finding. Keywords: obsessive-compulsive disorder, Indian Disability Evaluation Assessment Scale, duration of illness, disability

Tunnel current in self-assembled monolayers of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane

The current density-voltage (J-V) characteristics of self assembled monolayers of 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) chemisorbed on the native oxide surface of p+-doped Si demonstrate the excellent tunnel dielectric behavior of organic monolayers down to 3 carbon atoms. The J-V characteristics of MPTMS SAMs on Si are found to be asymmetric, and the direction of rectification has been found to depend upon the applied voltage range. At voltages < 2.45V, the reverse bias current was found to be higher than forward bias current; while at higher voltages this trend was reversed. This result is in agreement with Simmons theory. The tunnel barrier heights for this short chain (2.56 and 2.14 eV respectively at Au and Si interfaces) are in good agreement with the ones for longer chains (>10 carbon atoms) if the chain is chemisorbed at the electrodes. These results extend all previous experiments on such molecular tunnel dielectrics down to 3 carbon atoms. This suggests that these molecular monolayers, having good tunnel behavior (up to 2.5 eV) over a large bias range, can be used as gate dielectric well below the limits of Si-based dielectrics.Comment: Small, in pres

Scientific Temper is a Natural Process in Children: Let’s allow it to groom

    Get PDF
Little kids are naturally blessed with a scientific temper, which can be proven by looking at their daily activities. Have you ever noticed how a baby of 7-8 months, who cannot even stand on its feet, gets out of the bed? The baby gauges the height of the bed and then moulds his or her body to get down in such a fashion not to get injured. And if you give small hollow pipes to a set of children, you will find that almost all of them will peep through the pipe-hole. Small kids are very curious when they see new things (animals, toys, birds, trees, fruits, etc.) and they want to analyse them in their own way. They are full of why’s and how’s, and have their own comments and answers. However, as they grow older, the curiosity driven learning among kids is marred by the biased and confused teachings from society, parents and teachers as they want to impose their knowledge upon them

PREVALENCE OF CARDIOVASCULAR COMORBIDITIES IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE IN SUBURBAN AREAS OF SOUTH-WEST INDIA

Objective: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the vital cause of morbidity and mortality in Western world, though it has become an increasing cause of mortality in India also in the past decade. Another concern is that COPD patients use medications that stimulate the cardiovascular system, including anticholinergic agents and sympathomimetic medications to study the prevalence of cardiovascular comorbidities in patients with COPD. Methods: It was a prospective observational study, which was conducted on inpatient subjects diagnosed to have COPD based on GOLD guidelines 2020, for a period of 1 year in tertiary care hospital. Results: The most of the patients were in 60–80 year age group (70%) and majority was males (87%). All the males (n=87) were smokers (62 ex-smokers and 25 present smokers) while all females (n=13) were non-smokers. The mean BMI for patients with CVD was 25.85±4.19 kg/m2 while for patients without CVD, mean BMI was 27.46±3.98 kg/m2. About 63.2% of the males (n=87) had some cardiovascular comorbidity as compared to 38.5% of females (n=13). The prevalence of cardiovascular comorbidities in subjects with COPD was 60% in the present study. This was significantly higher in patients with COPD as compared to the reported prevalence value in the general population of comparable age group. The prevalence of associated cardiovascular abnormality in COPD patients with increased PCV (Packed cell volume), leukocytosis, and neutrophilia are 56.3%, 65%, and 60%, respectively. The most common cardiovascular comorbidity in subjects with COPD was ischemic heart disease (21%), followed by heart failure (20%), stroke (5%), arrhythmias (3%), and LVH (3%)

Contemporary Relevance of Bertrand Russell’s Views on Early Childhood Education

    Get PDF
Bertrand Russell’s educational thoughts significantly deal with reforming education for school going children and he also supported pre-primary education. He favored early childhood education for physical, intellectual and character development. His emphasis on character development of a child shows the significance of early years of life for development of an individual. This paper aims at exploring Bertrand Russell’s thoughts on early childhood education. It is an attempt to understand the significance of early childhood education for the holistic development of the children. Though there are early childhood education is prevalent in our country, but it was not mandatory to get early childhood education till the approval of National Education Policy (N.E.P., 2020). It has included early childhood education in compulsory school education for promoting better learning and well being of a child. It is a qualitative research in which historical method has been used where data has been collected from primary and secondary sources. The finding of the study shows that Bertrand Russell’sthought on early childhood education is relevant in present Indian context for developing good values, physical and mental development as well as in future learning. This shows that the encouragement to early childhood education and Bertrand Russell’s thoughts on early childhood education would be helpful for holistic development of children
